  • Runge--Kutta methods in financial engineering
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Exploring the world of financial engineering. - Västerås : Mälardalen University. ; , s. 66-79
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nowadays, a number of mathematical problems that pertain to the area of financial engineering are formulated and solved through the systems of ordinary differential equations. Apart from that, it appears to be impossible to derive close form solutions for some of those systems. Therefore, numerical methods for solving differential equations are a unique tool for finding approximate solutions. The paper is devoted to some of the most common and well-studied numerical method, namely a family of explicit Runge--Kutta methods. The paper touches upon both theoretical aspects such as derivation of Runge--Kutta schemes of 2- 4 order of accuracy, and the numerical implementation of the Runge--Kutta method for approximating a solution of some specific problem in financial engineering.

  • Homogenisation of water and sediment bacterial communities in a shallow lake (lake Balihe, China)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Freshwater Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0046-5070 .- 1365-2427. ; 68:1, s. 155-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Planktonic and benthic bacterial communities hold central roles in the functioning of freshwater ecosystems and mediate key ecosystem services such as primary production and nutrient remineralisation. Although it is clear that such communities vary in composition both within and between lakes, the environmental factors and processes shaping the diversity and composition of freshwater bacteria are still not fully understood. In order to assess seasonal and spatial variability in lake bacterial communities and identify environmental factors underpinning biogeographical patterns, we performed a large-scale sampling campaign with paired water and sediment sample collection at 18 locations during four seasons in Lake Balihe, a subtropical shallow fish-farming lake in mid-eastern China. Pelagic and benthic bacterial communities were distinctly different in terms of diversity, taxonomic composition and community structure, with Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria dominating lake water, and Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria dominating sediment. Nevertheless, these two communities had stronger spatial concordance and overlap in taxa during spring and autumn seasons. Together, the main drivers of both the spatial and temporal variations in Lake Balihe bacterial communities were identified as water temperature, turbidity, nitrogen and phosphorus availability, and thermal stratification controlled by wind-mixing and activity of the dense farmed fish populations. Notably, populations affiliated with Firmicutes, known to be abundant in fish gut microbiome, were especially abundant in the summer season and locations where high fish biomass was found, suggesting a potential link between fish gut microbiome and the pelagic bacterial communities. Our findings demonstrated seasonal homogenisation of pelagic and benthic bacterial communities linked to marked shifts in a set of seasonally-driven environmental variables including water temperature and nutrient availability.

  • News media construction of the Other
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ida Blom Conference, Bergen, Norway.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The image of the Muslim as the ‘other’ in Europe has been prevalent and negativelypresented in different media globally. In the presence of a ‘threat’ society, especiallyafter September 11 attacks, the media construction of Muslims contributed to theculture of fear from immigrants. Integrating Muslims in European societies has beenaffected by the general ‘threat’ image of Muslims. Hence, integrating Muslim women inparticular can be challenged by the media construction of veiled Muslim women’svisibility in the society as a challenge to Western modernity and their construction as a‘threat’ to the modern “Western” world. Using the case of the French headscarf ban inFrance in 2004 I examine mediatized identity construction and how the ‘other’ has beenrepresented in the news media. The case has created a huge debate in the global mediaon women’s right to practice their religion freely within western democracies. The study used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to empirically analyze the Western andArab media coverage of the case examining how was this case constructed in the media, testing which voices are used in the coverage, and if women got the opportunity toexpress their opinion in the media, bringing up in which mode the coverage constructthe headscarf and Islam as a ‘threat’ and when does cosmopolitanism and tolerance popto the surface.

  • iNOS expression and lethal prostate cancer in patients with localized disease
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - : American Association for Cancer Research. - 0008-5472 .- 1538-7445. ; :22S
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) has demonstrated both tumor-promoting and tumor-inhibiting effects in prostate cancer. However, the relationship between iNOS protein expression and long-term prostate cancer outcomes is unclear. We evaluated iNOS expression in tumor epithelia and stroma in 300 men with localized tumors diagnosed incidentally by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in Sweden. In this extreme case-control design, cases (N=132) died of prostate cancer and controls (N=168) survived at least 8 years following diagnosis without death from prostate cancer or a competing cause. Immunohistochemistry was undertaken with a polyclonal rabbit anti-human NOS2 antibody (Abcam) and the Ventana (Roche) semi-automated staining system. Two observers individually scored the staining according to intensity and number of positive cells from 0-3. The median value across cores in each patient were then categorized as <1, >1-<2, and >2, separately for epithelial and stromal compartments. Odds ratios for lethal prostate cancer were estimated with logistic regression controlling for the matching factors (age, calendar year of diagnosis), as well as tumor stage, Gleason score, and percent tumor. iNOS was expressed by stromal-associated M1 macrophages and fibroblasts, as well as tumor cells. Gleason score was positively associated with both stromal and epithelial iNOS staining. In the stroma, there was no statistically significant association between iNOS expression and lethal prostate cancer after adjustment for clinical covariates. However, the odds of lethal prostate cancer increased with tumor expression of iNOS in the fully adjusted model. Compared to patients with the lowest category of iNOS expression, the odds ratios for lethal prostate cancer were 2.96 (95% CI: 1.26-6.96) for patients in the second category and 3.80 (95% CI: 1.45-9.97) for patients in the top category. These results suggest that iNOS may help to identify patients with aggressive prostate cancer at the time of diagnosis, or may be a therapeutic target. Given previously reported in vitro data suggesting that iNOS promotes proliferation of androgen-independent prostate tumors, future analyses will investigate association between iNOS expression and time to castration-resistant prostate cancer in this patient population.

  • Characterisation of n-InP/n-GaAs Wafer Fused Heterojunctions
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physica scripta. T. - 0281-1847. ; 79, s. 206-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the properties of wafer-fused Si-doped isotype hetero-junctions between GaAs and InP. Current/voltage measurements were conducted to study the influence of the doping concentrations on each side of the interface on the electrical conductivity. An almost ohmic behavior with a very low series resistance was obtained for the highest examined doping level on the GaAs side, whereas the doping concentration on the InP side was found to be of little significance. Fusion at different temperatures showed that the conductivity degrades significantly below 500°C, although mechanically stable junctions were obtained also at temperatures as low as 305°C. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements showed no redistribution of Si, but indicated the presence of small amounts of C and Fe impurities at the interface.

  • Understanding the scattering mechanism of single-walled carbon nanotube based gas sensors
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Carbon. - : Elsevier BV. - 0008-6223 .- 1873-3891. ; 48:7, s. 1970-1976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the interaction between gas molecules with single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) we show that as a result of collisions the gas scattering contributes with an important background signal and should be considered in SWCNT-based gas sensors. Experimental evidence of the collision-induced tube wall deformation is demonstrated using in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. Results support the occurrence of the scattering process and show how gas collisions may affect the electronic structure of SWCNTs.

  • A case study in designing trustworthy interactions : implications for socially assistive robotics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Computer Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2624-9898. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work is a case study in applying recent, high-level ethical guidelines, specifically concerning transparency and anthropomorphisation, to Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) design practice for a real-world Socially Assistive Robot (SAR) application. We utilize an online study to investigate how the perception and efficacy of SARs might be influenced by this design practice, examining how robot utterances and display manipulations influence perceptions of the robot and the medical recommendations it gives. Our results suggest that applying transparency policies can improve the SAR's effectiveness without harming its perceived anthropomorphism. However, our objective measures suggest participant understanding of the robot's decision-making process remained low across conditions. Furthermore, verbal anthropomorphisation does not seem to affect the perception or efficacy of the robot.

  • The (lacking) role of SEA within local energy and climate planning - Pathways forward. Advances in European SEA and strategic planning
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The recent upsurge in voluntary local energy and climate planning is generally appraised. Nevertheless, as these plans are produced informally, SEA legislation does not apply. Findings concerning Swedish energy planning point towards that SEA often is lacking even when the directive does apply, due to lack of knowledge and the conviction that these plans are sustainable ‘by default’. Thus, many energy and climate plans may miss procedural and substantive benefits of SEA, for example to highlight interactions between pathways for decarbonisation and other sustainability objectives. This paper raises questions concerning current energy and climate planning practices and discuss pathways forward.
