    • The article focuses on the social and political meaning of anger as illustrated in Njáls saga. It can be shown that men and women did not possess the same right to "show" anger and that angry outburst coming from women and men of lower social standing were understood as out of place and even ludicrous. Men of high social standing were supposed to control their anger, they should not be easily provoked, but contrary to other social groups they owned the right to show their "rightful" anger, which under the given circumstances should be used as an instrument of social control.
