Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
- The aim of this paper is to look at how consumption of one commodity – sugar – was transformed in Scandinavia from being a luxury to being a mass-consumed commodity. The paper also tries to look at what factors had an impact upon this transformation. The paper finds that falling relative prices, probably due to international market integration, were crucial for the transformation. The ordinary consumers in Denmark seem to have gained little from the fact that Denmark (in contrast to Sweden) was a colonial power.
