  • Tourism and heritage in Antarctica : exploring cultural, natural and subliminal experiences
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Polar Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1088-937X .- 1939-0513. ; 45:1, s. 37-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The guidelines on heritage management adopted by the 2018 Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting provide the most recent iteration for an Antarctic tourism sector which had, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, been projected to increase further with various risks and potential impacts requiring careful management. In this paper the role of cultural heritage for tourism prior to the COVID-19 pandemic is examined through three empirical perspectives. First, how the Antarctic cultural heritage is represented through the designation of Historic Sites and Monuments and Site Guidelines for Visitors; then how this is presented through tourism operators’ websites; and, finally, how it is experienced by visitors as narrated in open-source social media information. Each dataset suggests that, while cultural heritage is an important component of an increasingly commodified tourist offering, it is only part of an assemblage of elements which combine to create a subliminal and largely intangible Antarctic experience. In particular, a polarization of the heritage experience between cultural and natural does not appear productive. The paper proposes a more nuanced understanding of heritage tourism in Antarctica which accommodates the notion of a hybrid experience that integrates cultural heritage, the history and stories this heritage represents, and the natural environmental setting.

  • Trace-Driven Network Path Emulation
  • 2002
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports on on-going work where a trace-driven approach to network path emulation is investigated. Time stamped probe packets are sent along a network path whereby a probe packet trace can be generated. It basically contains the send times and the one-way delays/loss indications of the probe packets. Inside the emulator, the probe packet trace is used by a loss model and a delay model. These determine if a packet should be dropped or what the delay of the packet should be. Three loss models and three delay models are evaluated. For non-responsive UDP-based flows, the trace-driven loss and delay models that determine loss and delay based on loss-rates and delay distribution parameters calculated across the probe packet trace using a small gliding window are found to perform best. For adaptive TCP flows, none of the evaluated trace-driven models performs well. Instead, the Bernoulli loss model and an independent average delay model performs best.

  • Introduction : Posthumanism and the man question
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Posthumanism and the Man Question: Beyond Anthropocentric Masculinities. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 9781000824292 - 9781032113760 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introductory chapter provides a rationale for the book, reviews some of the key theoretical underpinnings of posthumanism and new materialism and outlines how they have influenced feminist theorising in relation to debates about the subject, sex, gender, sexual difference, the body, affect, relationality, matter, agency, human and other-than-human entanglements, ecology and technology. The implications of these feminist engagements with posthumanism and new materialism for critical studies of men and masculinities are considered and a posthuman feminist critique of the subject of ‘Man’ as the ideal human is outlined. The authors reflect upon their own biographical intellectual and political journeys of engagement with these issues to ground these debates in their own shifting subjectivities. The chapter concludes with a guide to chapters by the contributors who, from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds, bring these theoretical perspectives to life in their own considerations of what posthumanism and new materialism mean for the ‘man question’.

  • Strong impact of micropollutants on prokaryotic communities at the horizontal but not vertical scales in a subtropical reservoir, China
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micropollutants have become of great concern, because of their disrupting effects on the structure and function of microbial communities. However, little is known about the relative importance of trace micropollutants on the aquatic prokaryotic communities as compared to the traditional physico-chemical characteristics, especially at different spatial dimensions. Here, we investigated free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) prokaryotic communities in a subtropical water reservoir, China, across seasons at horizontal (surface water) and vertical (depth-profile) scales by using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Our results showed that the shared variances of physico-chemicals and micropollutants explained majority of the spatial variations in prokaryotic communities, suggesting a strong joint effect of the two abiotic categories on reservoir prokaryotic communities. Micropollutants appeared to exert strong independent influence on the core sub-communities (i.e., abundant and wide-spread taxa) than on the satellite (i.e., less abundant and narrow-range taxa) counterparts. The pure effect of micropollutants on both core and satellite sub-communities from FL and PA fractions was similar to 1.5 folds greater than that of physico-chemical factors at the horizontal scale, whereas an opposite effect was observed at the vertical scale. Moreover, eight micropollutants including anti-fungal agents, antibiotics, bisphenol analogues, stimulant and UV-filter were identified as the major disrupting compounds with strong associations with core taxa of typical freshwater prokaryotes. Altogether, we concluded that the ecological disrupting effects of micropollutants on prokaryotic communities may vary along horizontal and vertical dimensions in freshwater ecosystems.

  • Best Practice Guideline: Transportation of People Seated in Wheelchairs, Version 2.21.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary, key points: Transport considerations ought to be factored into the initial phase of the wheelchair & seating assessment process. Manufacturers of wheelchairs and seating systems should make information relating to the safe transportation of their products readily available - and easy to understand. With the desire to provide the safest possible transport environment for wheelchair-seated passengers, and other vehicle occupants, all stakeholders must engage in a multi-disciplinary approach to ensuring transport safety; involving the wheelchair user with their families, carers, equipment prescribers, and transport providers*. A proven crashworthy wheelchair, used in conjunction with a proven wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint system (WTORS), is fundamental to the provision of safe transport for both people who remain seated in their wheelchairs in a motor vehicle and other vehicle occupants. Exceptions exist on certain high-mass, low-speed urban public transport vehicles, where the likelihood of a crash situation and the severity thereof are low. Powered and manual wheelchairs offer a large variety of seated postures through their tilt, recline, and other mechanisms. Guidelines ought to be given by manufacturers with respect to use of these mechanisms during transport. The combination of a crashworthy seating system, that accommodates the proper fit of the occupant restraints, and a crashworthy wheelchair serve to indicate to the prescriber that the risks of equipment failure when exposed to crash conditions during transport have been reduced as far as reasonably possible. To minimise injury risk for wheelchair occupants, prescribers shall seek to ensure that the means of attachment of the seating system to the wheelchair is suitable for use in transport. It is imperative that the manufacturer’s instructions for use and fitting instructions for seating systems are carefully adhered to. Due to the individual nature of disability, prescribers may at times be faced with the need to work beyond manufacturers’ recommendations for the use of systems in order to maximise medical benefits, and to address the postural and functional needs of a wheelchair user. In such cases a risk management process ought to be followed, and transport providers should have a working comprehension of the relevant documented risk assessment process and understand the subsequent Risk/Benefit analysis. When properly used, a WTORS allows the wheelchair to be well secured to the vehicle floor and the passenger in the wheelchair to benefit from a properly fitted seatbelt system. Wheelchair manufacturers should highlight in their pre-sale literature any special requirements relating to the use of their wheelchair with WTORS. This information should include the configuration of the representative wheelchair, which was subjected to crash testing, so that informed decisions can be made with respect to wheelchair selection & configuration. Prescriber awareness of the type of transport environment and the facilities available to assist vehicle entry and egress is highly beneficial in the risk analysis process.

  • Linkage of Meis1 leukemogenic activity to multiple downstream effectors including Trib2 and Ccl3.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Experimental hematology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-472X. ; 36:7, s. 845-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: MEIS1, a HOX cofactor, collaborates with multiple HOX and NUP98-HOX fusion proteins to accelerate the onset of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) through largely unknown molecular mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To further resolve these mechanisms, we conducted a structure-function analysis of MEIS1 and gene-expression profiling, in the context of NUP98-HOXD13 (ND13) leukemogenesis. RESULTS: We show, in a murine bone marrow transplantation model, that the PBX-interaction domain, the homeodomain, and the C-terminal domain of MEIS1, are all required for leukemogenic collaboration with ND13. In contrast, the N-terminal domain of MEIS1 is dispensable for collaboration with ND13, but is required for Flt3 upregulation, indicating additional roles for MEIS1 in induction of leukemia independent of alterations in Flt3 expression. Gene-expression profiling of a cloned ND13 preleukemic cell line transduced with wild-type or Meis1 mutant forms revealed deregulation of multiple genes, including a set not previously implicated as MEIS1 targets. Chromatin immunoprecipitation revealed the in vivo occupancy of MEIS1 on regulatory sequences of Trib2, Flt3, Dlk1, Ccl3, Ccl4, Pf4, and Rgs1. Furthermore, engineered overexpression of Trib2 complements ND13 to induce AML while Ccl3 potentiates the repopulating ability of ND13. CONCLUSION: This study shows that Meis1-induced leukemogenesis with ND13 can occur in the absence of Flt3 upregulation and reveals the existence of other pathways activated by MEIS1 to promote leukemia.

  • Linkage of the potent leukemogenic activity of Meis1 to cell-cycle entry and transcriptional regulation of cyclin D3.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 115:20, s. 4071-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MEIS1 is a three-amino acid loop extension class homeodomain-containing homeobox (HOX) cofactor that plays key roles in normal hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis. Expression of Meis1 is rate-limiting in MLL-associated leukemias and potently interacts with Hox and NUP98-HOX genes in leukemic transformation to promote self-renewal and proliferation of hematopoietic progenitors. The oncogenicity of MEIS1 has been linked to its transcriptional activation properties. To further reveal the pathways triggered by Meis1, we assessed the function of a novel engineered fusion form of Meis1, M33-MEIS1, designed to confer transcriptional repression to Meis1 target genes that are otherwise up-regulated in normal and malignant hematopoiesis. Retroviral overexpression of M33-Meis1 resulted in the rapid and complete eradication of M33-Meis1-transduced normal and leukemic cells in vivo. Cell-cycle analysis showed that M33-Meis1 impeded the progression of cells from G(1)-to-S phase, which correlated with significant reduction of cyclin D3 levels and the inhibition of retinoblastoma (pRb) hyperphosphorylation. We identified cyclin D3 as a direct downstream target of MEIS1 and M33-MEIS1 and showed that the G(1)-phase accumulation and growth suppression induced by M33-Meis1 was partially relieved by overexpression of cyclin D3. This study provides strong evidence linking the growth-promoting activities of Meis1 to the cyclin D-pRb cell-cycle control pathway.
