- This extended abstract presents unique additional data from an upcoming publication in the ongoing project Kids & media (2014/15), conducted by Swedish Media Council (2015). The analysis is based on the findings in the largest quantitative study on children’s media use in Sweden. The study includes 4903 respondents selected from a random sample of all children and parents residing in Sweden. The abstract includes data and analysis dealing with children’s possession of and access to media technology, how they use it and why. Moreover it covers several explorative multivariate analyses of demographic divides covering children’s media use. The demographic analysis assesses the impact of family income, parents’ education levels, and parents’ national background on children’s media possessions and practices. More specifically, this abstract describes the relationship between these socio-demographic variables and children’s access to media technology, extent of media use and self-reflexivity in media activities.

Investigation of transcription factor AP-2 beta genotype in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

- It has repeatedly been shown that the serotonergic system is involved in the symptomatology of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Women with PMDD are reported to differ from symptom-free controls with regard to serotonin-related biological markers. Evidence from family and twin studies suggests a genetic contribution to the aetiology of PMDD. The expression of human transcription factor AP-2beta in neural crest cell lineages and neuroectodermal cells suggests that this protein may be of importance for functional characteristics of neurons by regulating the expression of target genes. Within the monoaminergic systems, several genes have binding sites for AP-2beta in regulatory regions, suggesting an involvement of AP-2beta in these systems. The gene encoding AP-2beta is located on chromosome 6p12-p21.1 and includes a polymorphic region consisting of a variable number of [CAAA] repeats located in the second intron. We have earlier shown that AP-2beta genotype is associated with serotonergic phenotypes and that brainstem levels of AP-2beta correlate positively to serotonin metabolism in rat frontal cortex. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PMDD and transcription factor AP-2beta genotype. The participants included 176 women with PMDD and 91 healthy controls. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reactions. We did not observe any differences in AP-2beta genotype frequencies between PMDD subjects and controls. Our results suggest that AP-2beta genotype is not a risk factor for PMDD. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating transcription factor AP-2beta genotype in women with PMDD. Hence, these results should be considered preliminary until replicated.

- Background: Bacterial infections can cause a variety of airway diseases. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) directly respond to the presence of microbes and partake in the innate immune defense. TLR4 is activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and has been detected in sinonasal tissue, epithelial cells and various inflammatory cells. Macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha) is a chemokine released during the inflammatory process. The present study investigated the potential role and regulation of MIP-1 alpha in LPS-induced nasal inflammation. Methods: Thirty-two healthy individuals were intranasally challenged with LPS or vehicle. Nasal lavage was performed, followed by a nasal biopsy. Inflammatory cells were counted, MIP-1 alpha levels analyzed and expression of MIP-1 alpha mRNA in biopsies quantified. Neutrophils isolated from peripheral blood were treated with LPS and effects on MIP1 alpha release, cell survival, and the involved signal pathways, were investigated. Results: LPS challenge caused an increase of MIP-1 alpha in nasal lavage. No corresponding change in mRNA expression was seen in nasal biopsies, suggesting the increase was not due to epithelial synthesis. Neutrophil numbers increased after LPS provocation. Treatment of isolated neutrophils with LPS delayed neutrophil apoptosis and resulted in a time-and concentration-dependent release of MIP-1 alpha, which was reduced by inhibitors of transcription and of nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B, protein kinase C (PKC) and p38 MAPK pathways. Conclusions: Nasal LPS challenge results in release of MIP-1 alpha. The release most likely originates from recruited neutrophils, via NF-kappa B-, PKC-and p38 MAPK-dependent pathways. LPS stimulation delayed neutrophil apop tosis. MIP-1 alpha may constitute an important mediator in neutrophilic airway disease. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

- Background: Allergic rhinitis is a systemic disorder, and it is clinically well recognized that it can be aggravated by infection. Activation of the innate immune system constitutes a critical element in the process. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) comprise a part of the innate immune system, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of TLR4 represents bacterial-induced interactions in various model systems. The present study examines how TLR2 and TLR4 expression is affected by symptomatic allergic rhinitis, and if LPS added upon allergen affects nasal cytokine release. Methods: In patients with pollen-induced allergic rhinitis and healthy non-allergic volunteers, nasal lavage (NAL), peripheral blood and bone marrow were sampled before and during the pollen season. TLR2 and TLR4 expression was determined flow cytometrically. Changes in the TLR receptor expression pattern were evaluated by a nasal challenge with allergen followed by LPS, or vice versa. Symptoms along with cells and cytokines in NAL were analyzed. Results: TLR4 expression increased in leukocytes in NAL, peripheral blood and bone marrow during symptomatic allergic rhinitis. A similar increase was seen for TLR2 in neutrophils in blood. Nasal challenge with allergen followed by LPS augmented the release of IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha. Conclusion: A systemic up-regulation of TLR4 in symptomatic allergic rhinitis may explain why LPS preceded by allergen increases nasal cytokine release. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

- This article undertakes a critical discourse analysis of Swedish quality newspaper editorials and their evolving framing of immigration since the 2015 peak of the recent European “refugee crisis”. Positioned within the ongoing discursive shifts in the Swedish public sphere and the growth of discursive uncivility in its mainstream areas, the analysis highlights how xenophobic and racist discourses once propagated by the far and radical right gradually penetrate into the studied broadsheet newspapers. We argue that the examined editorials carry the tendency to normalise once radical perceptions of immigration. This takes place by incorporating various discursive strategies embedded in wider argumentative frames – or topoi – of demographic consequences, Islam and Islamisation, threat, and integration. All of these enable constructing claims against immigration now apparently prevalent in the examined strands of the Swedish “quality” press.

- In recent decades, anti-immigrant, racist and nationalist attitudes have become increasingly mainstream, transforming public debates on immigration and immigrants in Europe and beyond. These attitudes and sentiments have been widely disseminated and amplified through digital communication, including commercial social media platforms. To better understand the relationship between racism and digital communication, it is necessary to move beyond media-centric explanations and simplified discussions of online hate speech and platform regulation. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-theoretical approach to digital racism, i.e., racist content produced and circulated online. The paper presents an understanding of digital racism in relation to four perspectives: networked affect, nationalism, masculinity and conspiracy thinking. It takes a relational approach to these theoretical perspectives and discusses how they could be utilized to understand and analytically approach digital racism at the macro, meso and micro levels.
