  • DEL : Deep embedding learning for efficient image segmentation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Of The Twenty-Seventh International Joint Conference On Artificial Intelligence. - California : International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence. ; , s. 864-870
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Image segmentation has been explored for many years and still remains a crucial vision problem. Some efficient or accurate segmentation algorithms have been widely used in many vision applications. However, it is difficult to design a both efficient and accurate image segmenter. In this paper, we propose a novel method called DEL (deep embedding learning) which can efficiently transform superpixels into image segmentation. Starting with the SLIC superpixels, we train a fully convolutional network to learn the feature embedding space for each superpixel. The learned feature embedding corresponds to a similarity measure that measures the similarity between two adjacent superpixels. With the deep similarities, we can directly merge the superpixels into large segments. The evaluation results on BSDS500 and PASCAL Context demonstrate that our approach achieves a good tradeoff between efficiency and effectiveness. Specifically, our DEL algorithm can achieve comparable segments when compared with MCG but is much faster than it, i.e. 11.4fps vs. 0.07fps.

  • Convolutional LSTM Network with Hierarchical Attention for Relation Classification in Clinical Texts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 international joint conference on neural networks (IJCNN). - : IEEE. - 9781728119854
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identifying relation from clinical texts is a complex and challenging task due to the specific biomedical knowledge. Existing methods for this work generally have the misclassification problem caused by sample class imbalance. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical attention-based convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) network model to solve this problem. We construct a sentence as multi-dimensional hierarchical sequence and directly learn local and global context information by a single-layer ConvLSTM network. Besides, a hierarchical attention-based pooling is built to capture the parts of a sentence that are relevant with the target semantic relation. Experiments on the 2010 i2b2/VA relation dataset show that our model outperforms several previous state-of-the-art models without relying on any external features.

  • Are Friends of My Friends Too Social? Limitations of Location Privacy in a Socially-Connected World
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2018 THE NINETEENTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MOBILE AD HOC NETWORKING AND COMPUTING (MOBIHOC 18). - New York, NY, USA : ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY. - 9781450357708 ; , s. 280-289
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the ubiquitous adoption of smartphones and mobile devices, it is now common practice for ones location to be sensed, collected and likely shared through social platforms. While such data can be helpful for many applications, users start to be aware of the privacy issue in handling location and trajectory data. While some users may voluntarily share their location information (e.g., for receiving location-based services, or for crowdsourcing systems), their location information may lead to information leaks about the whereabouts of other users, through the co-location of events when two users are at the same location at the same time and other side information, such as upper bounds of movement speed. It is therefore crucial to understand how much information one can derive about others positions through the co-location of events and occasional GPS location leaks of some of the users. In this paper we formulate the problem of inferring locations of mobile agents, present theoretically-proven bounds on the amount of information that could be leaked in this manner, study their geometric nature, and present algorithms matching these bounds. We will show that even if a very weak set of assumptions is made on trajectories patterns, and users are not obliged to follow any reasonable patterns, one could infer very accurate estimation of users locations even if they opt not to share them. Furthermore, this information could be obtained using almost linear-time algorithms, suggesting the practicality of the method even for huge volumes of data.

  • Low cutoff G.657-compatible fiber for data center interconnects operating in the 1064 and 1310 nm windows
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 11286
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical interconnects in data centers have traditionally used 850 nm GaAs-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in combination with multimode fiber, having a reach up to 100 m in length. Longer links typically use standard single-mode fiber in conjunction with either InP-based edge-emitting lasers or silicon photonic transmitters operating in the 1310 nm or 1550 nm window. Single-mode GaAs-based VCSELs operating at 1064 nm offer another path for achieving longer system reach. Potential advantages of these VCSELs include better power efficiency, modulation speeds reaching 50 Gbps and large-scale fabrication volumes. The longer wavelength is also beneficial due to the lower attenuation and chromatic dispersion of optical fibers at that wavelength. However, one practical issue for single-mode transmission is that the G.657 standard for single-mode fiber requires that the 22-meter cable cutoff wavelength be less than 1260 nm, and these fibers are typically few-moded at 1064 nm. The large differences between the group velocities of the LP01 and LP11 modes can lead to degradation of the system performance due to multi-path interference if the higher order modes are present. To resolve this quandary, we have designed and validated the performance of a new optical fiber which is single-moded at wavelengths less than 1064 nm, but also has G.657-compliant mode field diameter and dispersion characteristics that enable it to be used in the 1310 nm window.

  • A Novel Maximum Distance Separable Code Based RIS-OFDM : Design and Optimization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM 2022). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1521-1526
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a novel maximum distance separable (MDS) code based and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted wireless communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Specifically, input bits are firstly divided into groups and their MDS codes are utilized to decide the amplitudes and phases of subcarriers. The introduction of the MDS code helps to increase the minimum Hamming distance between symbols and improve on the capability of error detection. Besides, the RIS is adopted to create additional paths between the radio frequency (RF) and the receiver as well as alter the signal phases with derived optimal solution. Benefiting from the strength of the RIS, the proposed system can better overcome multipath fading compared with conventional systems. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed system in terms of reducing bit error rate (BER) through multipath channels.

  • Transmit Beamforming for Inter-Operator Spectrum Sharing
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Future Network and Mobile Summit Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the nonorthogonal spectrum sharing scenario, in which coexisting transmitters of different operators concurrently utilize the same frequency band. The transmitters (and possibly the receivers) are equipped with multiple antennas. In EU FP7 project SAPHYRE, we propose various transmit beamforming techniques to manage the interference in the physical layer. We show that operating points that are more efficient than orthogonal spectrum sharing can be reached, when the operators cooperatively design their beamforming vectors to minimize the interference.

  • RETRACTED: Human-Machine Collaborative Systems for Microsurgical Applications
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Robotics Research. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 3540232141 ; , s. 162-171
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  We describe our current progress in developing Human-Machine Collaborative Systems (HMCSs) for microsurgical applications such as vitreo-retinal eye surgery. Three specific problems considered here are (1) developing of systems tools for describing and implementing an HMCS, (2) segmentation of complex tasks into logical components given sensor traces of a human performing the task, and (3) measuring HMCS performance. Our goal is to integrate these into a full microsurgical workstation with the ability to automatically 11 parse" traces of user execution into a task model which is then loaded into the execution environment, providing the user with assistance using online recognition of task state. The major contributions of our work to date include an XML task graph modeling framework and execution engine, an algorithm for real-time segmentation of user actions using continuous Hidden Markov Models, and validation techniques for analyzing the performance of HMCSs.

  • Binary field network coding design for multiple-source multiple-relay networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE Int Conf Commun. - : IEEE. - 9781612842332
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the design of network codes for M-source, N-relay wireless networks over slow fading channels. Specifically, vector-wise binary field network coding (BFNC) schemes are proposed. In the construction of our BFNC schemes, we utilize a diversity achieving criterion which can be expressed in terms of the linear independence of quasi-cyclic matrices. Our codes can be implemented with low-complexity encoders at the relays as only binary operations are used. Meanwhile at the destination, for small code lengths, ML decoder can be applied. For large code lengths, we propose a modified BP decoder with low decoding complexity. From analysis and simulations, we show that our proposed BFNC schemes can achieve full diversity for the ML decoder, as well as full diversity for the modified BP decoder we propose for large block lengths. Our simulations also show that our proposed BFNC schemes achieve a higher coding gain relative to previous network coding schemes.
