  • Attitude of Instructors in Integrating Information Communication Technologies into Classroom Teaching: The Case of Two Universities of Technology in Ethiopia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Ethiopian Journal of Education. ; XLII:1, s. 47-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thisstudy was aimed primarily at ascertaining whether there is a difference in instructors’attitudestowards the use of ICT in classroom teaching contexts of the two technological universitiesin Ethiopia. Specifically, Addis Ababa Science andTechnologyUniversity (AASTU)and Adama Science and TechnologyUniversity (ASTU) instructors were comparedto see if ICT use perceived usefulness varies with theirattitudinal patterns. Attempts were evident to see if changes might be noticeableacrosstheir demographic attributesas well. A sequential explanatory mixed-method design was adopted to gain a fuller understanding of the issue. Because ofthis, data were collected using questionnaires administered to 136 randomly selected instructors. Interviews were held with 14 participantsconsisting of department heads, deansand vice presidentsof both universitiesto collect qualitative data. Results showed that both AASTU and ASTU group members generally held a strong positive belief (with few exceptions) that integrating ICTs can significantly bring unparalleled importance to classroom teaching.Yet, apart from the reported significantly different effects between the five age groups in the ASTU context, F(4, 71) = 2.60, p= .04, eta η2 = .42, there appeared to be no significant difference between participants’ attitude towards ICT by their gender, age, academic rank, and working experience. The regression resultsalso depicted that demographic variables could not significantly predict an attitudevariable; neitherdid attitude contribute to a significant variation in participants’ pedagogical ICT competences(TPK). A conclusion is that holding most of the positive attitude is a promising result and a solid foundation that is already in place. However, there existed some inconsistent findings in the study that future research needstoclear the disparities.

  • Suppressed diversity of survivin splicing in active rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Arthritis Research & Therapy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1478-6354 .- 1478-6362. ; 17:175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Alternative splicing distinguishes normal and pathologic cells. High levels of oncoprotein survivin recognise patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, we assess clinical relevance of alternative splicing of survivin in leukocytes of peripheral blood (PBMC) and bone marrow (BM) in RA patients. Method: Transcription of survivin wild-type (survivin-WT), survivin-2B and survivin-Delta Ex3 was measured in 67 randomly selected RA patients and in 23 patients before and after B cell depletion with rituximab. Analysis was done in relation to disease activity, anti-rheumatic treatment and serum levels of rheumatoid factor (RF) and survivin. Results: Survivin-WT was the dominant splice variant equally expressed in T and B cells, while survivin-2B and survivin-Delta Ex3 were higher in B cells. High disease activity (DAS28>5.1) was associated with an excess of survivin-WT and low ratios between survivin-2B/WT (p=0.035) and survivin-Delta Ex3/WT in PBMC. Depletion of B cells by rituximab caused a decrease in survivin-WT (p=0.005) in PBMC, increasing the ratio between survivin-2B/WT (p=0.009) and survivin-Delta Ex3/WT (p=0.001) in BM. This increase in survivin-2B/WT was associated with reduction in CD19+BM cells (r=0.929, p=0.007), RF (IgM, r=0.857, p=0.024; IgA, r=0.739, p=0.021), and DAS28 (0.636, p=0.054). The increase in survivin-Delta Ex3 in BM was associated with a reduction of CD19+BM cells (r=0.714, p=0.058) and DAS28 (r=0.648, p=0.049), while survivin-Delta Ex3/WT was associated with RF (IgG, r=0.882, p=0.016). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the suppressed diversity of survivin splicing in leukocytes may attribute to adverse self-recognition in RA. Depletion of autoantibody producing B cells improves the balance of survivin splicing.

  • Condition monitoring of the disconnectors in the electric power transmission grid with temperature sensors
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Conference proceedings of 3rd International Conference on Maintenance Performance Measurement and Management. - Lappeenranta : Lappeenranta University of Technology.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the electrical substations there are disconnectors, which can be opened to disconnect equipment from high voltage parts. As the disconnectors are normally closed and transfer current owing to their often critical positions in the power grid, it is difficult to maintain them. The purpose is to develop a new online method to monitor disconnectors and a new theory for their ageing, in order to schedule the maintenance better.Increasing resistance in the contacts could cause high temperatures and eventually failure. Nine IR temperature sensors have been placed on each of six disconnectors together with reference sensors. After cleaning and interpolation of the data, two regressions are made, first between a sensor at a contact and the reference sensor, then adding the square of the current. The method is promising since it explains most of the variation in temperature with a sensor dependent parameter.

  • Influence of substrate microstructure and surface finish on cracking and delamination response of TiN-coated cemented carbides
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Wear. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 352-353, s. 102-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cracking and delamination of TiN-coated hardmetals (WC-Co cemented carbides) when subjected to Brale indentation were studied. Experimental variables were substrate microstructure related to low (6 wt% Co) and medium (13 wt% Co) binder content, and surface finishes associated with grinding and polishing stages before film deposition. Brale indentation tests were conducted on both coated and uncoated hardmetals. Emphasis has been placed on assessing substrate microstructure and subsurface finish effects on load levels at which cracking and delamination phenomena emerge, the type of cracking pattern developed, and how fracture mechanisms evolve with increasing load. It is found that polished and coated hardmetals are more brittle (radial cracking) and the adhesion strength (coating delamination) diminishes with decreasing binder content. Such a response is discussed on the basis of the influence of intrinsic hardness/brittleness of the hardmetal substrate on both cracking at the subsurface level and effective stress state, particularly regarding changes in shear stress component. Grinding promotes delamination compared to the polished condition, but strongly inhibits radial cracking. This is a result of the interaction between elastic-plastic deformation imposed during indentation and several grinding-induced effects: remnant compressive stress field, pronounced surface texture and micro cracking within a thin altered subsurface layer. As a consequence, coating spallation prevails over radial cracking as the main mechanism for energy dissipation in ground and coated hardmetals. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • AQUEOUSANDLIPID NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE METABOLOMIC PROFILES OF THE EARTHWORM APORRECTODEA CALIGINOSA SHOW POTENTIAL AS AN INDICATOR SPECIES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL METABOLOMICS
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0730-7268. ; 33:10, s. 2313-2322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The common pasture earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa has often been neglected in environmental metabolomics in favor of species easily bred in the laboratory. The present study assigns aqueous metabolites in A. caliginosa using high-resolution 1- and 2-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In total, 51 aqueous metabolites were identified, including typical amino acids (alanine, leucine, asparagine, phenylalanine), sugars (maltose, glucose), the dominant earthworm-specific 2-hexyl-5-ethyl-furansulfonate, and several previously unreported metabolites (oxoglutarate, putrescine). Examining the lesser-known earthworm lipid metabolome showed various lipid fatty acyl chains, cholesterol, and phosphatidylcholine. To briefly test if the NMR metabolomic techniques could differentiate A. caliginosa from different sites, earthworms were collected from 2 adjacent farms. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis detected metabolomic differences, suggesting the worms from the 2 sites differed in their energy metabolism, as indicated by altered levels of alanine, glutamine, glutamate, malate, fumarate, and lipids. Evidence of greater utilization of lipid energy reserves and onset of protein catabolism was also present. While the precise cause of the metabolomic differences could not be determined, the results show the potential of this species for further environmental metabolomic studies. • The regulation of cyclin D1 degradation: roles in cancer development and the potential for therapeutic invention
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Molecular Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4598. ; 6
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyclin D1 is an important regulator of cell cycle progression and can function as a transcriptionl co-regulator. The overexpression of cyclin D1 has been linked to the development and progression of cancer. Deregulated cyclin D1 degradation appears to be responsible for the increased levels of cyclin D1 in several cancers. Recent findings have identified novel mechanisms involved in the regulation of cyclin D1 stability. A number of therapeutic agents have been shown to induce cyclin D1 degradation. The therapeutic ablation of cyclin D1 may be useful for the prevention and treatment of cancer. In this review, current knowledge on the regulation of cyclin D1 degradation is discussed. Novel insights into cyclin D1 degradation are also discussed in the context of ablative therapy. A number of unresolved questions regarding the regulation of cellular cyclin D1 levels are also addressed.

  • An Overview of Sustainability Assessment Frameworks in Agriculture
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-445X. ; 11:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research established a link between environmental alterations due to agriculture intensification, social damage and the loss of economic growth. Thus, the integration of environmental and social dimensions is key for economic development. In recent years, several frameworks have been proposed to assess the overall sustainability of farms. Nevertheless, the myriad of existing frameworks and the variety of indicators result in difficulties in selecting the most appropriate framework for study site application. This manuscript aims to: (i) understand the criteria to select appropriate frameworks and summarize the range of those being used to assess sustainability; (ii) identify the available frameworks to assess agricultural sustainability; and (iii) analyze the strengths, weaknesses and applicability of each framework. Six frameworks, namely SAFA, RISE, MASC, LADA, SMART and public goods (PG), were identified. Results show that SMART is the framework that considers, in a balanced way, the environmental, sociocultural and economic dimensions of sustainability, whereas others focused on the environmental (RISE), environmental and economic (PG) and sociocultural (SAFA) dimension. However, depending on the scale assessment, sector of application and the sustainability completeness intended, all frameworks are suitable for the assessment. We present a decision tree to help future users understand the best option for their objective.
