- Xeno-transplantation of pancreatic islets represents a promising therapeutic alternative for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. However, potent innate immune responses induced shortly after the transplantation of donor islets to the recipient, comprising the Instant Blood Mediated Immune Reaction (IBMIR), exert detrimental actions on islet graft function. The coagulation and complement cascades together with the leukocyte and platelet populations are the major players in IBMIR. This innate immune attack affects dramatically islet integrity and leads to significant loss of function of the xenograft. In the present review, we focus on the mechanisms contributing to IBMIR components and address therapeutic intervention approaches to limit IBMIR by administering inhibitors in circulation, by coating the islet surface with inhibitors or by generating transgenic donor animals; these approaches could result in improved xenograft survival.

- Il s'agit, dans cet article, de comprendre le vivant comme l'institution d'un rapport psycho-somatique particulier. Autrement dit, l'être humain ne se définit pas selon une équation modulable âme+corps, puisqu'un certain nombre d'antinomies biologiques mettent à mal cette vision.Nous aimerions, dans le cadre de la pensée de Castoriadis, redéfinir le vivant suivant ce rapport qui ne permet pas de séparer (même dÂŽun point de vue logique) deux éléments distincts. En effet, nous montrerons, à partir de certains exemples comment la psyché est déjà du somatique et le soma déjà du psychique. Ainsi, la vie est appréhendée à travers cette circulation, puisquÂŽelle est institution social-historique de ce rapport psyché-soma. Ce dernier varie en fonction des significations imaginaires (le symbolisme institutionnel) qui forment un ensemble social. Il n'y a pas une individualité vivante qui croîtrait pour s'insérer dans un contexte social, dans la mesure où cette individualité est elle-même déjà fabriquée par la société. Un certain nombre dÂŽétudes psycho-somatiques vont dans ce sens mais le maintien dÂŽune telle position holiste pose problème, dans la mesure où elle supposerait une étude simultanée des processus sociaux et du fonctionnement interne du vivant. La résonance entre société et individu ne peut faire l'objet privilégié d'une science exacte: le vivant doit être compris à travers une étude anthropologique globale.

A pilot study : the UNC passive aerosol sampler in a working environment

- Objectives: Dust is generally sampled on a filter using air pumps, but passive sampling could be a cost-effective alternative. One promising passive sampler is the University of North Carolina passive aerosol sampler (UNC sampler). The aim of this study is to characterize and compare the UNC sampler’s performance with PM10 and PM2.5 impactors in a working environment.Methods: Area sampling was carried out at different mining locations using UNC samplers in parallel with PM2.5 and PM10 impactors. Two different collection surfaces, polycarbonate (PC) and carbon tabs (CT), were employed for the UNC sampling. Sampling was carried out for 4–25 hours.Results: The UNC samplers underestimated the concentrations compared to PM10 and PM2.5 impactor data. At the location with the highest aerosol concentration, the time-averaged mean of PC showed 24% and CT 35% of the impactor result for PM2.5. For PM10, it was 39% with PC and 58% with CT. Sample blank values differed between PC and CT. For PM2.5, PC blank values were ~7 times higher than those of CT, but only 1.8 times higher for PM10. The blank variations were larger for PC than for CT.Conclusions: Particle mass concentrations appear to be underestimated by the UNC sampler compared to impactors, more so for PM2.5 than for PM10. CT may be preferred as a collection surface because the blank values were lower and less variable than for PC. Future validations in the working environment should include respirable dust sampling.

- There are 47 groups of indigenous peoples in Russia. Many languages of indigenous peoples are at the edge of extinction. From 1995 to 2010 the proportion of indigenous pupils among all indigenous peoples learning their mother tongue decreased by almost half. This article examines the legal regulation of the Russian system of school education and defines what place indigenous languages have in this system. The author comes to the conclusion that realising the right of indigenous children to learn their mother tongue in Russia is complicated by many factors of both legal and non-legal character.
