  • An Interpolating Wavelet Filter for Terrain Navigation
  • 1998
  • In: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Multisource-Multisensor Information Fusion. - 1892512017 ; , s. 251--258
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In terrain navigation, traditional aircraft navigation sensors are integrated with a digital terrain map. A promising point-mass algorithm has been applied to the problem in previous work. The algorithm recursively updates the probability of the aircraft position in a finite set of positions in a mesh placed over the map area. It has proven efficient in extensive simulations when the grid mesh is chosen sufficiently dense. In order to improve the computational efficiency of the algorithm a novel approach to adaptively choose the grid point positions is presented in this work. Results from wavelet theory and numerical solution of partial differential equations are utilized to adapt the grid mesh on several dyadic scales. Initial tests indicate that the new wavelet filter achieves significant computational performance gains compared to the uniform point-mass version. This fact also makes it applicable to estimation in higer dimension.

  • The BIOSAFEPAPER project for in vitro toxicity assessments : Preparation, detailed chemical characterisation and testing of extracts from paper and board samples
  • 2008
  • In: Food and Chemical Toxicology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0278-6915 .- 1873-6351. ; 46:7, s. 2498-2509
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Nineteen food contact papers and boards and one non-food contact board were extracted following test protocols developed within European Union funded project BIOSAFEPAPER. The extraction media were either hot or cold water, 95% ethanol or Tenax, according to the end use of the sample. The extractable dry matter content of the samples varied from 1200 to 11,800 mg/kg (0.8-35.5 mg/dm2). According to GC-MS the main substances extracted into water were pulp-derived natural products such as fatty acids, resin acids, natural wood sterols and alkanols. Substances extracted into ethanol particularly, were diisopropylnaphthalenes, alkanes and phthalic acid esters. The non-food contact board showed the greatest number and highest concentrations of GC-MS detectable compounds. The extracts were subjected to a battery of in vitro toxicity tests measuring both acute and sublethal cytotoxicity and genotoxic effects. None of the water or Tenax extracts was positive in cytotoxicity or genotoxicity assays. The ethanol extract of the non-food contact board gave a positive response in the genotoxicity assays, and all four ethanol extracts gave positive response(s) in the cytotoxicity assays to some extent. These responses could not be pinpointed to any specific compound, although there appeared a correlation between the total amount of extractables and toxicity.

  • Cost Based Resource Management in Hybrid Cellular-Broadcasting Systems
  • 2004
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article presents ongoing work on the problem of minimization of delivery cost per item for a given set of multimedia items, under the assumption that we have at our disposal a cellular and a broadcasting infrastructure covering the same service area. Only best effort traffic is considered. The center of our investigations is a generic mobile network operator. We consider two scenarios: the MNVO (Mobile Network Virtual Operator) and the Integrator Operator. We defined a cost model for each scenario. Our approach to the problem is to propose a suitable resource management mechanism which takes the transmission cost as an input for assigning different data traffic to the infrastructure that delivers it cheapest.

  • Experiences and reflections on three years of CPS Summer schools within EIT digital
  • 2016
  • In: 2016 Workshop on Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems Education, WESE 2016 - Organized as a Part of Embedded Systems Week, Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450346573
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of current European Commission effort in term of educational innovation to reduce the gap between research and industry which still is a barrier to the economic development. Entrepreneurial innovation & education driving Europe's digital transformation (EIT Digital for short) is an European-based initiative fostering I&E (innovation and entrepreneurship) by integrating education, research and business at different educational levels. For instance in EIT master programmes, students work together with industries and academics to have a faster go-to-market of research results. Summer schools are part of the master programs; three of them have been organised related to CPS (cyber-physical systems), critical infrastructure and, more recently, Industry 4.0. Past and present events are discussed and the experience from these events is reported. It is further analysed how the general setup of the summer school program is affecting the educational aspects and achievement of the intended learning outcomes.

  • The state-of-the-art in container technologies : Application, orchestration and security
  • 2020
  • In: Concurrency and Computation. - : John Wiley and Sons Ltd. - 1532-0626 .- 1532-0634. ; 32:17
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Containerization is a lightweight virtualization technology enabling the deployment and execution of distributed applications on cloud, edge/fog, and Internet-of-Things platforms. Container technologies are evolving at the speed of light, and there are many open research challenges. In this paper, an extensive literature review is presented that identifies the challenges related to the adoption of container technologies in High Performance Computing, Big Data analytics, and geo-distributed (Edge, Fog, Internet-of-Things) applications. From our study, it emerges that performance, orchestration, and cyber-security are the main issues. For each challenge, the state-of-the-art solutions are then analyzed. Performance is related to the assessment of the performance footprint of containers and comparison with the footprint of virtual machines and bare metal deployments, the monitoring, the performance prediction, the I/O throughput improvement. Orchestration is related to the selection, the deployment, and the dynamic control of the configuration of multi-container packaged applications on distributed platforms. The focus of this work is on run-time adaptation. Cyber-security is about container isolation, confidentiality of containerized data, and network security. From the analysis of 97 papers, it came out that the state-of-the-art is more mature in the area of performance evaluation and run-time adaptation rather than in security solutions. However, the main unsolved challenges are I/O throughput optimization, performance prediction, multilayer monitoring, isolation, and data confidentiality (at rest and in transit). © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
