  • Development and Validation of a 6-item Working Alliance Questionnaire for Repeated Administrations During Psychotherapy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association. - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 27:1, s. 169-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, researchers have started to measure the working alliance repeatedly across sessions of psychotherapy, relating the working alliance to symptom change session by session. Responding to questionnaires after each session can become tedious, leading to careless responses and/or increasing levels of missing data. Therefore, assessment with the briefest possible instrument is desirable. Because previous research on the Working Alliance Inventory has found the separation of the Goal and Task factors problematic, the present study examined the psychometric properties of a 2-factor, 6-item working alliance measure, adapted from the Working Alliance Inventory, in 3 patient samples (ns = 1,095, 235, and 234). Results showed that a bifactor model fit the data well across the 3 samples, and the factor structure was stable across 10 sessions of primary care counseling/psychotherapy. Although the bifactor model with 1 general and 2 specific factors outperformed the 1-factor model in terms of model fit, dimensionality analyses based on the bifactor model results indicated that in practice the instrument is best treated as unidimensional. Results support the use of composite scores of all 6 items. The instrument was validated by replicating previous findings of session-by-session prediction of symptom reduction using the Autoregressive Latent Trajectory model. The 6-item working alliance scale, called the Session Alliance Inventory, is a promising alternative for researchers in search for a brief alliance measure to administer after every session.

  • Examining the Psychometric Properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Brief Form in Justice-Involved Samples
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 27:4, s. 1211-1218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Impulsivity is an important component If many forms of psychopathology. Though widely used as an index of this construct, the 30-item Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (HIS-11) has demonstrated questionable psychometric properties in several research reports. An 8-item shortened Version has recently been proposed, the Barran Impulsiveness Scale Brief (BIS-Brief) form, which was designed to overcome some of the limitations of the longer scale. In this report, we examine the internal structure and theoretically relevant external correlates of this new short form in large archival samples of individuals involved in the criminal justice system (prison inmates, substance abusers in mandatory treatment, and forensic inpatients). Confirmatory factor analysis of the BIS-Brief indicates adequate fit following a relatively minor modification. Correlations between the HIS-Brief and an array' of criterion measures other self-report scales, interview-based measures, and behavioral outcomes are consistent with predictions and show relatively little or no decrement in predictive validity when compared with the 30-item HIS-11. Our results suggest that the HIS-Brief is a promising brief measure of impulsivity that evinces good psychometric properties across a range of offender samples.

  • The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale : Cross-National Measurement Invariance and Convergent Validity Evidence
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 36:1, s. 14-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a widely used measure that captures somatic symptoms of coronavirus-related anxiety. In a large-scale collaboration spanning 60 countries (Ntotal = 21,513), we examined the CAS's measurement invariance and assessed the convergent validity of CAS scores in relation to the fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) and the satisfaction with life (SWLS-3) scales. We utilized both conventional exact invariance tests and alignment procedures, with results revealing that the single-factor model fit the data well in almost all countries. Partial scalar invariance was supported in a subset of 56 countries. To ensure the robustness of results, given the unbalanced samples, we employed resampling techniques both with and without replacement and found the results were more stable in larger samples. The alignment procedure demonstrated a high degree of measurement invariance with 9% of the parameters exhibiting noninvariance. We also conducted simulations of alignment using the parameters estimated in the current model. Findings demonstrated reliability of the means but indicated challenges in estimating the latent variances. Strong positive correlations between CAS and FCV-19S estimated with all three different approaches were found in most countries. Correlations of CAS and SWLS-3 were weak and negative but significantly differed from zero in several countries. Overall, the study provided support for the measurement invariance of the CAS and offered evidence of its convergent validity while also highlighting issues with variance estimation.

  • Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD) : Preliminary Validation of the Parent Version in a Spanish Sample of Preschoolers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association. - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 31:11, s. 1357-1367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD) scale (Salekin & Hare, 2016) was developed as a measure of the broader construct of psychopathy in childhood and adolescence. In addition to conduct disorder (CD) symptoms, the PSCD addresses the interpersonal (grandiose-manipulative), affective (callous-unemotional). and lifestyle (daring-impulsive) traits of psychopathic personality. The PSCD can be scored by parents and teachers. The present study is a preliminary test of the psychometric properties of the PSCD-Parent Version in a sample of 2,229 children aged 3 to 6 years. Confirmatory factor analyses supported both a 3- and 4-factor structure being invariant across gender groups. The validity of the PSCD was also supported by convergent-divergent associations with an alternative measure of psychopathic traits as well as by the expected relations with fearlessness, conduct problems, reactive and proactive aggression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder symptoms, and social competence skills. Overall, the PSCD is a promising alternative measure for assessing early manifestation of the broader construct of psychopathy in children. Its use should facilitate discussion of the conceptualization, assessment, predictive value, and clinical usefulness of the psychopathic construct as it relates to CD at early developmental stages.

  • Using the Personality Assessment Inventory to Predict Male Offenders’ Conduct During and Progression Through Substance Abuse Treatment
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 24:1, s. 216-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior research has supported the utility of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991, 2007) to predict various negative outcomes among offender samples, yet few studies have specifically examined its association with behavior in treatment. In this study, the PAI was administered to 331 male offenders court ordered into substance abuse treatment. Several theoretically relevant PAI scales (e.g., Antisocial Features, Borderline Features) predicted various forms of problematic conduct (e.g., disruptive behavior, aggression) and subjective and objective ratings of treatment progress. Although there was relatively limited evidence for the superiority of any one predictor over the others, the Aggression (AGG) scale demonstrated incremental validity above and beyond other indicators for general noncompliance and aggressive behavior. Interpersonal scales also predicted select treatment behavior while sharing relatively little common variance with AGG. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing lower order and higher order dimensions on the PAI and other measures.

  • The Child PTSD Symptom Scale: An Update and Replication of Its Psychometric Properties
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 25:3, s. 1025-1031
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The psychometric properties of the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS) were examined in 2 samples. Sample 1 (N 185, ages 6–17 years) consisted of children recruited from hospitals after accidental injury, assault, and road traffic trauma, and assessed 6 months posttrauma. Sample 2 (N 68, ages 6–17 years) comprised treatment-seeking children who had experienced diverse traumas. In both samples psychometric properties were generally good to very good (internal reliability for total CPSS scores .83 and .90, respectively). The point-biserial correlation of the CPSS with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis derived from structured clinical interview was .51, and children diagnosed with PTSD reported significantly higher symptoms than non-PTSD children. The CPSS demonstrated applicability to be used as a diagnostic measure, demonstrating sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 72%. The performance of the CPSS Symptom Severity Scale to accurately identify PTSD at varying cutoffs is reported in both samples, with a score of 16 or above suggested as a revised cutoff.

  • Identifying Subgroups of Patients With Eating Disorders Based on Emotion Dysregulation Profiles : A Factor Mixture Modeling Approach to Classification
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - Washington, United States : American Psychological Association (APA). - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 34:4, s. 367-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to investigate whether individuals with eating disorders (ED; N = 857) could be empirically classified into qualitatively distinct subgroups based on their emotion dysregulation profiles. A series of increasingly complex models (factor analysis; FA, latent class analysis; LCA, and factor mixture models; FMM) were evaluated to determine whether the structure of psychopathology was best characterized by emotional dysregulation subtypes, dimensions, or a combination of the two. The subscales of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale were used as indicators. Data were split into an exploratory and confirmatory dataset, and the best-fitting models in the exploratory set were compared and validated against clinically relevant variables in the confirmatory set. Results confirmed that individuals could be grouped into three latent classes that were clearly distinguishable on ED pathology and psychiatric comorbidity. Specifically, individuals belonging to the class with more severe emotion dysregulation had higher levels of ED pathology and were more likely to engage in vomiting and binge eating as well as substance abuse and self-harm. These results provide initial support for emotional dysregulation profiling as a viable transdiagnostic approach to classification in the field of EDs.

  • Optimizing efficiency of psychopathology assessment through quantitative modeling : Development of a brief form of the Externalizing Spectrum Inventory
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Psychological Assessment. - Washington : American Psychological Association. - 1040-3590 .- 1939-134X. ; 25:4, s. 1332-1348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Externalizing Spectrum Inventory (ESI; Krueger, Markon, Patrick, Benning, & Kramer, 2007) provides for integrated, hierarchical assessment of a broad range of problem behaviors and traits in the domain of deficient impulse control. The ESI assesses traits and problems in this domain through 23 lower order facet scales organized around 3 higher order dimensions, reflecting general disinhibition, callous aggression, and substance abuse. The full-form ESI contains 415 items, and a shorter form would be useful for questionnaire screening studies or multimethod research protocols. In the current work, we employed item response theory and structural modeling methods to create a 160-item brief form (ESI-BF) that provides for efficient measurement of the ESI's lower order facets and quantification of its higher order dimensions either as scale-based factors or as item-based composites. The ESI-BF is recommended for use in research on psychological or neurobiological correlates of problems such as risk-taking, delinquency, aggression, and substance abuse, and studies of general and specific mechanisms that give rise to problems of these kinds.
