  • Melting artificial spin ice
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 14, s. 035009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial spin ice arrays of micromagnetic islands are a means of engineering additional energy scales and frustration into magnetic materials. Here we demonstrate a magnetic phase transition in an artificial square spin ice and use the symmetry of the lattice to verify the presence of excitations far below the ordering temperature. We do this by measuring the temperature dependent magnetisation in different principal directions and comparing with simulations of idealised statistical mechanical models. Our results confirm a dynamical pre-melting of the artificial spin ice structure at a temperature well below the intrinsic ordering temperature of the island material. We thus create a spin ice array that has real thermal dynamics of the artificial spins over an extended temperature range.

  • Thermal fluctuations in artificial spin ice
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Nanotechnology. - 1748-3387 .- 1748-3395. ; 9:7, s. 514-519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial spin ice systems have been proposed as a playground for the study of monopole-like magnetic excitations(1,2), similar to those observed in pyrochlore spin ice materials(3). Currents of magnetic monopole excitations have been observed's, demonstrating the possibility for the realization of magnetic-charge-based circuitry. Artificial spin ice systems that support thermal fluctuations can serve as an ideal setting for observing dynamical effects such as monopole propagation and as a potential medium for magnetricity investigations(1,2). Here, we report on the transition from a frozen to a dynamic state in artificial spin ice with a square lattice. Magnetic imaging is used to determine the magnetic state of the islands in thermal equilibrium. The temperature-induced onset of magnetic fluctuations and excitation populations are shown to depend on the lattice spacing and related interaction strength between islands. The excitations are described by Boltzmann distributions with their factors in the frozen state relating to the blocking temperatures of the array. Our results provide insight into the design of thermal artificial spin ice arrays where the magnetic charge density and response to external fields can be studied in thermal equilibrium.

  • Giant magnetic domains in amorphous SmCo thin films
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 89:22, s. 224420-1-224420-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for tuning of magnetic properties and the exceptional uniformity are among the features that make amorphous magnetic materials attractive for technology. Here it is shown that the magnetization reversal in amorphous SmCo thin films takes place through the formation of giant magnetic domains, over a centimeter across. The domain structure is found to be dictated by the direction of the imprinted in-plane easy axis and the film boundaries. This is a consequence of the size of the anisotropy and the structural uniformity of the films, which also allows the movement of millimeter-long domain walls over distances of several millimeters. The results demonstrate the possibility of tailoring the magnetic domain structure in amorphous magnets over a wide range of length scales, up to centimeters. Moreover, they highlight an important consequence of the structural perfection of amorphous films.

  • Influence of the magnetic field on the plasmonic properties of transparent Ni anti-dot arrays
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 101:6, s. 063107-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extraordinary optical transmission is observed due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons in 2-dimensional hexagonal anti-dot patterns of pure Ni thin films, grown on sapphire substrates. A strong enhancement of the polar Kerr rotation is recorded at the surface plasmon related transmission maximum. Angular resolved reflectivity measurements under an applied field reveal an enhancement and a shift of the normalized reflectivity difference upon reversal of the magnetic saturation (transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect-TMOKE). The change of the TMOKE signal clearly shows the magnetic field modulation of the dispersion relation of SPPs launched in a 2D patterned ferromagnetic Ni film. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. • Theoretical stability, thin film synthesis and transport properties of the Mon+1GaCn MAX phase
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi. Rapid Research Letters. - : Wiley. - 1862-6254 .- 1862-6270. ; 9:3, s. 197-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase stability of Mon +1GaCn has been investigated using ab-initio calculations. The results indicate stability for the Mo2GaC phase only, with a formation enthalpy of 0.4 meV per atom. Subsequent thin film synthesis of Mo2GaC was performed through magnetron sputtering from elemental targets onto Al2O3 [0001], 6H-SiC [0001] and MgO [111] substrates within the temperature range of 500 degrees C and 750 degrees C. High structural quality films were obtained for synthesis on MgO [111] substrates at 590 degrees C. Evaluation of transport properties showed a superconducting behavior with a critical temperature of approximately 7 K, reducing upon the application of an external magnetic field. The results point towards the first superconducting MAX phase in thin film form.

  • Tailoring magnetism at the nanometer scale in SmCo5 amorphous films
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 25:41, s. 416004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thickness dependence of magnetic properties has been studied in SmCo5 amorphous films with imprinted in-plane anisotropy for thicknesses ranging down to the nanometer scale (2.5-100 nm). The field induced in-plane magnetic anisotropy decreases considerably when the film thickness is below 20 nm. Analysis of the magnetic anisotropy energy shows that the decrease of the induced in-plane anisotropy is accompanied by the development of an out-of-plane interface anisotropy. Two different regimes for the coercivity (H-c) change are found: below 3.75 nm, the H-c decreases continuously with decrease of the film thickness, whereas at above 3.75 nm, the H-c decreases with increase of the film thickness. This change in Hc can be understood by considering the decrease of the short range chemical order for the thinnest films (<3.75 nm) and the relative decrease of the interface contribution with increasing film thickness. The changes in anisotropy have a profound influence on the domain structure, in which the angle of the zigzag domain boundaries decreases with the inverse thickness of the layers.

  • Magnetic order and energy-scale hierarchy in articial spin ice structures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to explain and predict the properties of many physical systems, it is essential to understand the interplay of different energy scales. Here we present investigations of the magnetic order in thermalized artificial spin-ice structures, with different activation energies of the interacting Ising-like elements. We image the thermally equilibrated magnetic states of the nanostructures using synchrotron-based magnetic microscopy. By comparing results obtained from structures with one or two different activation energies, we demonstrate a clear impact on the resulting magnetic order. The differences are obtained by the analysis of the magnetic spin structure factors, in which the role of the activation energies is manifested by distinct short-range order. These results highlight the potential of artificial spin-ice structures to serve as model systems for designing various energy-scale hierarchies and investigating their impact on the collective dynamics and magnetic order.

  • Multiple energy scales in mesospin systems : The vertex-frustrated Saint George lattice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : American Physical Society. - 2475-9953. ; 5:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interplay between topology and energy hierarchy plays a vital role in the collective magnetic order in artificial ferroic systems. Here we investigate, experimentally, the effect of having one or two activation energies of interacting Ising-like magnetic islands—mesospins—in thermalized, vertex-frustrated lattices. The thermally arrested magnetic states of the elements were determined using synchrotron-based magnetic microscopy after cooling the samples from temperatures above the Curie temperature of the material. Statistical analysis of the correlations between mesospins across several length scales reveals changes in the magnetic order, reflecting the amount of ground state plaquettes realized for a vertex-frustrated lattice. We show that the latter depends on the presence, or not, of different activation energies.

  • Tailoring the magnetic order in mesoscopic spin systems
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mesoscopic spin systems can be designed and fabricated using modern nano-fabrication techniques. These systems can contain large numbers of patterned ferromagnetic elements, for which the shape will generally determine their effective mesospin dimensionality. The lateral arrangement of these mesospins can be further used to tune the interactions between them. With an appropriate choice of material, it is possible to define a temperature range where thermal fluctuations of these mesospins are experimentally accessible. To actively define this range, we use δ-doped Palladium, a three-layer system of Palladium—Iron—Palladium, for which the Curie-temperature scales with the Iron layer thickness. The patterned mesoscopic elements used in this work have a stadium-like shape that promotes a single magnetic domain state, thus making these islands behave as one-dimensional Ising-like mesospins that can be observed using magnetic imaging techniques. We investigate the impact on the magnetic order resulting from modifications of the square spin ice geometry. By adding, removing and merging elements in the square artificial spin ice architecture, energy-landscape variations can be realized. Firstly, an added interaction modifier is used to equilibrate the interactions between the mesospins at the vertex level, which can restore the degenerate ground state of the square spin ice model. Secondly, the removal of elements can lead to topologically frustrated spin systems, as not all building blocks can simultaneously be in their lowest energy state. Furthermore, the merging results in multiple element sizes in the mesospin system. As the magnetization reversal barrier is dependent on the element size, these mesospin systems have different energy barriers. The thermal ordering process in such a system differs from a single-size element system with its unique energy barrier. Using reciprocal space analysis tools like the magnetic spin structure factor we show that systems with multiple element sizes achieve a higher short-range order then their single-size element references. The magnetic order in mesoscopic spin systems could successfully be tailored by modifications of the lattice geometry.

  • Magnetic properties of amorphous Fe93Zr7 films : Effect of light ion implantation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 117:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Curie temperature (Tc) of amorphous FeZr alloys can be greatly enhanced by doping with light elements. In this investigation, ion implantation is used to dope Fe93Zr7 thin films with H, He, B, C, and N. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements confirm that the amorphous structure is preserved upon implantation for all samples, except for the N-implanted sample which is partially crystallized. The Curie temperature increases from 124 K for the pristine FeZr sample to about 400 K for the (FeZr)B0.11 sample. The increase of Tc is proportional to the increase in the average Fe-Fe distance, which allows us to conclude that the dominant cause of the Tc enhancement of amorphous Fe93Zr7 upon doping is a volume effect.
