  • A Novel P-shape Tessellation Approach on Double-Loop Networks
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON IT IN MEDICINE & EDUCATION, VOLS 1 AND 2, PROCEEDINGS. - NEW YORK : IEEE. - 9781424439294 ; , s. 507-511
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double loop computer networks are widely used in the design and implementation of local area networks and parallel processing architectures. However the embedding problems on double-loop networks have not been well studied due to the complexity of double-loop networks. Since the traditional L-shape, designed to compute the diameter of double-loop networks, is not efficient to solve embedding problems, we propose a novel tessellation approach to partition the geometric plane of double-loop networks into a set of parallelogram shaped tiles, called P-shape. Our proposed tessellation technique, P-shape, is a useful theoretical tool for embedding meshes on double-loop networks, and can be extended to analyze other problems as a bridge between regular graphs and double-loop networks.

  • The Finite-Size Effect on the Transport Properties in Edge-Modified Graphene Nanoribbon-Based Molecular Devices
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0192-8651 .- 1096-987X. ; 32:8, s. 1753-1759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The size-dependence on the electronic and transport properties of the molecular devices of the edge-modified graphene nanoribbon (GNR) slices is investigated using density-functional theory and Green's function theory. Two edge-modifying functional group pairs are considered. Energy gap is found in all the GNR slices. The gap shows an exponential decrease with increasing the slice size of two vertical orientations in the two edge terminated cases, respectively. The tunneling probability and the number of conducting channel decreases with increasing the GNR-slices size in the junctions. The results indicate that the acceptor-donor pair edge modulation can improve the quantum conductance and decrease the finite-size effect on the transmission capability of the GNR slice-based molecular devices.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0192-8651 .- 1096-987X. ; 32:4, s. 737-741
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic and transport properties of an edge-modified prototype graphene nanoribbon (GNR) slice are investigated using density functional theory and Green's function theory. Two decorating functional group pairs are considered, such as hydrogen-hydrogen and NH2-NO2 with NO2 and NH2 serving as a donor and an acceptor, respectively. The molecular junctions consist of carbon-based GNR slices sandwiched between Au electrodes. Nonlinear I-V curves and quantum conductance have been found in all the junctions. With increasing the source-drain bias, the enhancement of conductance is quantized. Several key factors determining the transport properties such as the electron transmission probabilities, the density of states, and the component of Frontier molecular orbitals have been discussed in detail. It has been shown that the transport properties are sensitive to the edge type of carbon atoms. We have also found that the accepter-donor functional pairs can cause orders of magnitude changes of the conductance in the junctions.

  • Desialylated Platelet Clearance in the Liver is a Novel Mechanism of Systemic Immunosuppression
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research. - 2096-5168. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Platelets are small, versatile blood cells that are critical for hemostasis/thrombosis. Local platelet accumulation is a known contributor to proinflammation in various disease states. However, the anti-inflammatory/immunosuppressive potential of platelets has been poorly explored. Here, we uncovered, unexpectedly, desialylated platelets (dPLTs) down-regulated immune responses against both platelet-associated and -independent antigen challenges. Utilizing multispectral photoacoustic tomography, we tracked dPLT trafficking to gut vasculature and an exclusive Kupffer cell-mediated dPLT clearance in the liver, a process that we identified to be synergistically dependent on platelet glycoprotein Ibα and hepatic Ashwell-Morell receptor. Mechanistically, Kupffer cell clearance of dPLT potentiated a systemic immunosuppressive state with increased anti-inflammatory cytokines and circulating CD4+ regulatory T cells, abolishable by Kupffer cell depletion. Last, in a clinically relevant model of hemophilia A, presensitization with dPLT attenuated anti-factor VIII antibody production after factor VIII ( infusion. As platelet desialylation commonly occurs in daily-aged and activated platelets, these findings open new avenues toward understanding immune homeostasis and potentiate the therapeutic potential of dPLT and engineered dPLT transfusions in controlling autoimmune and alloimmune diseases.

  • A Multifunctional Small-Molecule Hole- Transporting Material Enables Perovskite QLEDs with EQE Exceeding 20%
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Energy Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 2380-8195. ; 8:3, s. 1445-1454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hole-transporting materials (HTMs) play critical roles in the device performance and stability of perovskite quantum dot light-emitting diodes (Pe-QLEDs). However, the development of small-molecule HTMs for achieving high-performance Pe-QLEDs has proven to be very challenging because of their low hole mobility and poor solvent resistance. Herein, we tailor-made a multifunc-tional small-molecule HTM, termed X10, with methoxy as the substituents, for application in Pe-QLEDs. X10 features high hole mobility, good film-forming ability, and strong solvent resistance ability as well as defect passivation effect. Subsequently, Pe-QLEDs employing X10 as HTM presented a promising external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.18%, which is 7-fold higher than that of the reference HTM-TCTA-based ones (EQE approximate to 2.88%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which a small-molecule HTM displays a high EQE over 20% in Pe-QLEDs. Our work provides important guidance for the rational design of multifunctional small-molecule HTMs for high-performance Pe-QLEDs.

  • Comparing machine learning-derived global estimates of soil respiration and its components with those from terrestrial ecosystem models
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9318 .- 1748-9326. ; 16:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CO2 efflux from soil (soil respiration (SR)) is one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon (C) cycle and its response to climate change could strongly influence future atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Still, a large divergence of global SR estimates and its autotrophic (AR) and heterotrophic (HR) components exists among process based terrestrial ecosystem models. Therefore, alternatively derived global benchmark values are warranted for constraining the various ecosystem model output. In this study, we developed models based on the global soil respiration database (version 5.0), using the random forest (RF) method to generate the global benchmark distribution of total SR and its components. Benchmark values were then compared with the output of ten different global terrestrial ecosystem models. Our observationally derived global mean annual benchmark rates were 85.5 ± 40.4 (SD) Pg C yr-1 for SR, 50.3 ± 25.0 (SD) Pg C yr-1 for HR and 35.2 Pg C yr-1 for AR during 1982-2012, respectively. Evaluating against the observations, the RF models showed better performance in both of SR and HR simulations than all investigated terrestrial ecosystem models. Large divergences in simulating SR and its components were observed among the terrestrial ecosystem models. The estimated global SR and HR by the ecosystem models ranged from 61.4 to 91.7 Pg C yr-1 and 39.8 to 61.7 Pg C yr-1, respectively. The most discrepancy lays in the estimation of AR, the difference (12.0-42.3 Pg C yr-1) of estimates among the ecosystem models was up to 3.5 times. The contribution of AR to SR highly varied among the ecosystem models ranging from 18% to 48%, which differed with the estimate by RF (41%). This study generated global SR and its components (HR and AR) fluxes, which are useful benchmarks to constrain the performance of terrestrial ecosystem models.

  • Nanoparticle emissions from the transport sector: health and policy impacts - the nPETS concept
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2022 Conference Proceedings Transport Research Arena, TRA Lisbon 2022. - : Elsevier BV. ; 72, s. 248-255
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Road, rail, air, and sea transport generate a major fraction of outdoor ultrafine particles. However, there is no common methodology for comparable sub 100 nm particle emissions measurement. This paper presents the nPETS (grant agreement No 954377) concept to understand and mitigate the effects of emerging non-regulated nanoparticle emissions. This paper presents the concept and selected results. For example, nucleation and condensation mechanisms occur more frequently in the urban background site, leading to new particle formation, while mostly fresh emissions are measured in the traffic site.

  • Cu Nanoparticle-Decorated Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen Nanosheets for Electrochemical Determination of Chloramphenicol
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 14:25, s. 28956-28964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, irregular Cu nanoparticle-decorated boron-carbon-nitrogen (Cu-BCN) nanosheets were successfully synthesized. A Cu-BCN dispersion was deposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare an electrochemical sensor (Cu-BCN/GCE) for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in the environment. Cu-BCN was characterized using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The performance of the Cu-BCN/GCE was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and its advantages were proven by electrode comparison. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to optimize the experimental conditions, including the amount of Cu-BCN deposited, enrichment potential, deposition time, and pH of the electrolyte. A linear relationship between the CAP concentration and current response was obtained under the optimized experimental conditions, with a wide linear range and a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.41 nmol/L. Cu-BCN/GCE exhibited high stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. In the presence of various organic and inorganic species, the influence of the Cu-BCN-based sensor on the current response of CAP was less than 5%. Notably, the prepared sensor exhibited excellent performance in real-water samples, with satisfactory recovery.

  • On potentials of regularized Wasserstein generative adversarial networks for realistic hallucination of tiny faces
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Neurocomputing. - : ELSEVIER. - 0925-2312 .- 1872-8286. ; 364, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Super-resolution of facial images, a.k.a. face hallucination, has been intensively studied in the past decades due to the increasingly emerging analysis demands in video surveillance, e.g., face detection, verification, identification. However, the actual performance of most previous hallucination approaches will drop dramatically when a very low-res tiny face is provided, due to the challenging multimodality of the problem as well as lack of an informative prior as a strong semantic guidance. Inspired by the latest progress in deep unsupervised learning, this paper focuses on tiny faces of size 16 x 16 pixels, hallucinating them to their 8 x upsampling versions by exploring the potentials of Wasserstein generative adversarial networks (WGAN). Besides a pixel-wise L2 regularization term imposed to the generative model, it is found that our advocated autoencoding generator with both residual and skip connections is a critical component for WGAN representing the facial contour and semantic content to a reasonable precision. With the additional Lipschitz penalty and architectural considerations for the critic in WGAN, the proposed approach finally achieves state-of-the-art hallucination performance in terms of both visual perception and objective assessment. The cropped CelebA face dataset is primarily used to aid the tuning and analysis of the new method, termed as tfh-WGAN. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only achieves realistic hallucination of tiny faces, but also adapts to pose, expression, illuminance and occluded variations to a great degree.

  • FENP : A Database of Neonatal Facial Expression for Pain Analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1949-3045. ; 14:1, s. 245-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we introduce a new neonatal facial expression database for pain analysis. This database, called facial expression of neonatal pain (FENP), contains 11,000 neonatal facial expression images associated with 106 Chinese neonates from two children's hospitals, i.e., the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University and Second Affiliated Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University in China. The facial expression images cover four categories of facial expressions, i.e., severe pain expression, mild pain expression, crying expression and calmness expression, where each category contains 2750 neonatal facial expression images. Based on this database, we also investigate the pain facial expression recognition problem using several state-of-the-art facial expression features and expression recognition methods, such as Gabor+SVM, LBP+SVM, HOG+SVM, LBP+HOG+SVM, and several Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) methods (including AlexNet, VGGNet, GoogLeNet, ResNet and DenseNet). The experimental results indicate that the proposed neonatal pain facial expression database is very suitable for the study of both neonatal pain and facial expression recognition. Moreover, the FENP database is publicly available after signing a license agreement (the users can contact Jingjie Yan (yanjingjie@njupt.edu.cn), Guanming Lu (lugm@njupt.edu.cn)) or Xiaonan Li (xnli@njmu.edu.cn).
