  • Discovery of an Unusual Optical Transient with the Hubble Space Telescope
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 690, s. 1358-1362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present observations of SCP 06F6, an unusual optical transient discovered during the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey. The transient brightened over a period of ~100 days, reached a peak magnitude of ~ 21.0 in both i 775 and z 850, and then declined over a similar timescale. There is no host galaxy or progenitor star detected at the location of the transient to a 3σ upper limit of i 775 >= 26.4 and z 850 >= 26.1, giving a corresponding lower limit on the flux increase of a factor of ~ 120. Multiple spectra show five broad absorption bands between 4100 Å and 6500 Å, and a mostly featureless continuum longward of 6500 Å. The shape of the light curve is inconsistent with microlensing. The transient's spectrum, in addition to being inconsistent with all known supernova types, does not match any spectrum in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. We suggest that the transient may be one of a new class. Based in part on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained from the data archive at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). STScI is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), Inc. under the NASA contract NAS 5-26555. The observations are associated with program GO-10496. Based in part on observations obtained at the European Southern Observatory under ESO program 077.A-0110. Based in part on observations collected at Subaru Telescope, which is operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Some of the data presented herein were obtained at the W.M. Keck Observatory, which is operated as a scientific partnership among the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, and NASA.

  • Applied systems research in social innovation: a position statement
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In their forthcoming article Dawson and Daniel (2009) provide a useful working definition of social innovation, referring to it as the process of collective idea generation, selection and implementation by people who participate collaboratively to meet social challenges. These ideas are owned by people who work together in pursuing social goals that may- but need not- service other organisational, technical, commercial or scientific goals. Defined in this way the term has, potentially, very wide boundaries- from new forms of organization and new concepts of family, to new ways of using information and communication technologies, and from new ideas of community to new products or services. This paper is a first approximation to identify relevant theory and develop a suitable framework that would allow applied systems researchers- those whose focus is usually operational and systems-orientated- to come to an understand about how their practices and technical innovations can lead to social innovation in broader organisational and societal senses. Combining ideas from the socio-technical movement, systems thinking, and semiotic theory, this first approximation to a social innovation framework recognises that an organisationally relevant view of social innovation needs to be local first, incremental rather than grand slam, must necessarily utilise evolutionary design principles, requires the promotion of participation in order to achieve stakeholder buy-in, as well as requiring a continuous improvement and innovation-oriented culture to be fostered within the organisation. Elements of this framework utilise action research methodology, abductive thinking, contextual features and communicative dimensions, both discursive and linguistic

  • Molecular basis of cell-biomaterial interaction: Insights gained from transcriptomic and proteomic studies
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-5905 .- 0142-9612. ; 27:35, s. 5871-5882
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the growing interest in clinical interventions that involve medical devices, the role for new biomaterials in modern medicine is currently expanding at a phenomenal rate. Failure of most implant materials stems from an inability to predict and control biological phenomena, such as protein adsorption and cell interaction, resulting in an inappropriate host response to the materials. Contemporary advances in biological investigation are starting to shift focus in the biomaterials field, in particular with the advent of high-throughput methodologies for gene and protein expression profiling. Here, we examine the role that emerging transcriptomic and proteomic technologies could play in relation to biomaterial development and usage. Moreover, a number of studies are highlighted which have utilized such approaches in order to try to create a deeper understanding of cell-biomaterial interactions and, hence, improve our ability to predict and control the biocompatibility of new materials. • HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DISCOVERY OF A z=3.9 MULTIPLY IMAGED GALAXY BEHIND THE COMPLEX CLUSTER LENS WARPS J1415.1+36 AT z=1.026
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ASTROPHYS J LETT. ; 707:1, s. l12-L16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of a multiply lensed Ly alpha emitter at z = 3.90 behind the massive cluster WARPS J1415.1+3612 at z = 1.026. Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope using the Advanced Camera for Surveys reveal a complex lensing system that produces a prominent, highly magnified arc and a triplet of smaller arcs grouped tightly around a spectroscopically confirmed cluster member. Spectroscopic observations using the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph on Subaru confirm strong Lya emission in the source galaxy and provide the redshifts for more than 21 cluster members with a velocity dispersion of 807 +/- 185 km s(-1). Assuming a singular isothermal sphere profile, the mass within the Einstein ring (7.13 +/- 0.'' 38) corresponds to a central velocity dispersion of 686(-19)(+15) km s(-1) for the cluster, consistent with the value estimated from cluster member redshifts. Our mass profile estimate from combining strong lensing and dynamical analyses is in good agreement with both X-ray and weak lensing results.

  • Correlation of the adhesive properties of cells to N-isopropylacrylamide/N-tert-butylacrylamide copolymer surfaces with changes in surface structure using contact angle measurements, molecular simulations, and Raman spectroscopy
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 17:15, s. 3889-3898
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and the more hydrophobic comonomer N-tert-butylacrylamide (NTBAM), with increasing NTBAM content (i.e., increasing hydrophobicity) were prepared. The adhesion of human epithelial cells on polymer films prepared from copolymers of NIPAM: NTBAM was observed to increase with increasing polymer hydrophobicity. However, in the absence of serum, cell adhesion to the different surfaces was statistically indistinguishable. Thus, it appears that the copolymer films differentially support cell adhesion due to selective adsorption of proteins from the physiological environment (the serum). Using contact angle measurements, molecular simulations, and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the different surfaces, we show evidence that the different behavior of cells on the films of increasing hydrophobicity is actually due to the different chemical properties of the surfaces with increasing content of NTBAM in the copolymers. As the NTBAM content is increased, the number of NH residues at the surface decreases, due to the additional steric hindrance of the bulkier NTBAM group, which results in decreased hydrogen bonding and thus decreased adsorption of proteins such as albumin. However, in some cases, the adsorption is driven by hydrophobic interactions, and proteins such as fibronectin were found to adsorb more to the films with a higher content of NTBAM. There appears, thus, to be a direct correlation between surface composition, i.e., the functional groups exposed at the surface, and protein binding and subsequent cell adhesion.

  • Mapping autism risk loci using genetic linkage and chromosomal rearrangements.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 39:3, s. 319-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are common, heritable neurodevelopmental conditions. The genetic architecture of ASDs is complex, requiring large samples to overcome heterogeneity. Here we broaden coverage and sample size relative to other studies of ASDs by using Affymetrix 10K SNP arrays and 1,168 families with at least two affected individuals, performing the largest linkage scan to date while also analyzing copy number variation in these families. Linkage and copy number variation analyses implicate chromosome 11p12-p13 and neurexins, respectively, among other candidate loci. Neurexins team with previously implicated neuroligins for glutamatergic synaptogenesis, highlighting glutamate-related genes as promising candidates for contributing to ASDs.
