  • Hot and cold running water: Understanding evolved star winds
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 13:S336, s. 347-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outstanding problems concerning mass-loss from evolved stars include initial wind acceleration and what determines the clumping scale. Reconstructing physical conditions from maser data has been highly uncertain due to the exponential amplification. ALMA and e-MERLIN now provide image cubes for five H2O maser transitions around VY CMa, at spatial resolutions comparable to the size of individual clouds or better, covering excitation states from 204 to 2360 K. We use the model of Gray et al. 2016, to constrain variations of number density and temperature on scales of a few au, an order of magnitude finer than is possible with thermal lines, comparable to individual cloud sizes or locally almost homogeneous regions. We compare results with the models of Decin et al. 2006 and Matsuura et al. 2014 for the circumstellar envelope of VY CMa; in later work this will be extended to other maser sources.

  • Masers: Precision probes of molecular gas
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1948 .- 0273-1177. ; 65:2, s. 780-789

    • Maser emission from water, methanol, silicon monoxide and other molecules can reach brightness temperatures ≫1010 K. Such observations can achieve sub-pc precision for discs around black holes or sub-au scale interactions in protostellar discs and the regions where evolved star winds reach escape velocity. Ultra-high resolution maser observations also provide photon statistics, for fundamental physics experiments. RadioAstron has shown the success – and limitations – of cm-wave maser observations on scales ≪1 mas with sparse baseline coverage. ALMA, APEX and earlier single dish searches have found a wealth of mm and sub-mm masers, some of which probably also attain high brightness temperatures. Masers are ideal for high-resolution observations throughout the radio regime and we need to consider the current lessons for the best observational strategies to meet specific science cases.

  • Sub-mm maser VLBI: How do stellar winds break free from the star's gravity?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sub-mm VLBI with ALMA will be a superb tool for imaging masers, as well as its capabilities as the "Event Horizon Telescope". Individual masing clouds will be resolved in multiple velocity channels, providing both beamed and unbeamed sizes. The relationship between beaming and intensity can then be used to distinguish between steady or turbulent and shocked outflows. Sub-au resolution will also confirm which transitions are co-spatial or segregated, compared with maser models predicting the required small-scale variations in density, temperature, velocity structure and radiation field. This will be aided further by micro-arcsec cm-wave maser results which are already starting to appear from RadioAstron. ALMA by itself will resolve the overall structure and differing extents of the various maser species, along with thermal lines, dust and continuum. Science verification data has already provided the first-ever resolved images of sub-mm water masers and continuum around an evolved star (VY CMa), showing that the high excitation lines are surprisingly extended. This requires local heating, maybe shocks, at many tens of stellar radii. These lines straddle the dust formation zone and future higher resolution observations will also resolve dust clumps and measure their acceleration. Such studies are vital to understanding how material ejected from cool stars breaks free from the stellar gravity, and the role of dust in this process.

  • Measuring magnetic fields near and far with the SKA via the zeeman effect
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; 9-13-June-2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measurement of Zeeman splitting in spectral lines-both in emission and absorption-can provide direct estimates of the magnetic field strength and direction in atomic and molecular clouds, both in our own MilkyWay and in external galaxies. This method will probe the magnetic field in the warm and cold neutral components of the interstellar medium, providing a complement to the extensive SKA Faraday studies planning to probe the field in the ionized components.

  • Magnetically aligned dust and SiO maser polarisation in the envelope of the red supergiant VY Canis Majoris
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 603, s. A92-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. Polarisation observations of circumstellar dust and molecular (thermal and maser) lines provide unique information about dust properties and magnetic fields in circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. Methods. We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 5 science verification observations of the red supergiant VY CMa to study the polarisation of SiO thermal /maser lines and dust continuum at similar to 1.7 mm wavelength. We analyse both linear and circular polarisation and derive the magnetic field strength and structure, assuming the polarisation of the lines originates from the Zeeman effect, and that of the dust originates from aligned dust grains. We also discuss other effects that could give rise to the observed polarisation. Results. We detect, for the first time, significant polarisation (similar to 3%) of the circumstellar dust emission at millimeter wavelengths. The polarisation is uniform with an electric vector position angle of similar to 8 degrees. Varying levels of linear polarisation are detected for the J = 4-3 (SiO)-Si-28 nu = 0; 1; 2; and (SiO)-Si-29 nu = 0; 1 lines, with the strongest polarisation fraction of similar to 30% found for the (SiO)-Si-29 nu = 1 maser. The linear polarisation vectors rotate with velocity, consistent with earlier observations. We also find significant (up to similar to 1%) circular polarisation in several lines, consistent with previous measurements. We conclude that the detection is robust against calibration and regular instrumental errors, although we cannot yet fully rule out non-standard instrumental effects. Conclusions. Emission from magnetically aligned grains is the most likely origin of the observed continuum polarisation. This implies that the dust is embedded in a magnetic field >13 mG. The maser line polarisation traces the magnetic field structure. The magnetic field in the gas and dust is consistent with an approximately toroidal field configuration, but only higher angular resolution observations will be able to reveal more detailed field structure. If the circular polarisation is due to Zeeman splitting, it indicates a magnetic field strength of similar to 1-3 Gauss, consistent with previous maser observations.

  • The loss of OH maser emission in the early stage of Post-AGB evolution
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213. ; 18, s. 371-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the results of an on-going monitoring program of 1612 MHz OH masers in OH/IR stars, we determined a lifetime encompassing late AGB and early post-AGB evolution of at least 4500 years. Fading of the OH masers observed with the Nançay Radio Telescope is detected in several post-AGB OH/IR stars on timescales of decades, while AllWISE/NEOWISE light curves taken almost in parallel show diverse behaviours.
