  • Stationary and dispersive features in resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering at the Ge 3p resonances
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048 .- 1873-2526. ; 173:2-3, s. 103-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering at the 3p resonances in crystalline Ge is presented. Both stationary and dispersive features are observed in a wide energy range above as well as below the ionization limits. These observations are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on a two-step model where the initially excited electron has no influence on the emission step. Excess population of states in the conduction band is found, and discussed in terms of attosecond electron dynamics. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Intramolecular vibronic dynamics in molecular solids: C60
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 72:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibronic coupling in solid C60 has been investigated with a combination of resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Excitation as a function of energy within the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital resonance yielded strong oscillations in intensity and dispersion in RPES, and a strong inelastic component in RIXS. Reconciling these two observations establishes that vibronic coupling in this core hole excitation leads to predominantly inelastic scattering and localization of the excited vibrations on the molecule on a femtosecond time scale. The coupling extends throughout the widths of the frontier valence bands.

  • Correlation of murine embryonic stem cell gene expression profiles with functional measures of pluripotency.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Stem cells (Dayton, Ohio). - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1066-5099 .- 1549-4918. ; 23:5, s. 663-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global gene expression profiling was performed on murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) induced to differentiate by removal of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) to identify genes whose change in expression correlates with loss of pluripotency. To identify appropriate time points for the gene expression analysis, the dynamics of loss of pluripotency were investigated using three functional assays: chimeric mouse formation, embryoid body generation, and colony-forming ability. A rapid loss of pluripotency was detected within 24 hours, with very low residual activity in all assays by 72 hours. Gene expression profiles of undifferentiated ESCs and ESCs cultured for 18 and 72 hours in the absence of LIF were determined using the Affymetrix GeneChip U74v2. In total, 473 genes were identified as significantly differentially expressed, with approximately one third having unknown biological function. Among the 275 genes whose expression decreased with ESC differentiation were several factors previously identified as important for, or markers of, ESC pluripotency, including Stat3, Rex1, Sox2, Gbx2, and Bmp4. A significant number of the decreased genes also overlap with previously published mouse and human ESC data. Furthermore, several membrane proteins were among the 48 decreased genes correlating most closely with the functional assays, including the stem cell factor receptor c-Kit. Through identification of genes whose expression closely follows functional properties of ESCs during early differentiation, this study lays the foundation for further elucidating the molecular mechanisms regulating the maintenance of ESC pluripotency and facilitates the identification of more reliable molecular markers of the undifferentiated state.

  • Bulk and surface charge states of K3C60
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 71:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We detect a significant angle-dependence in the core level and valence line shapes of photoelectron spectra of single crystal K3C60. This allows the identification of bulk and surface components in the data, and allows us to explain the anomalous line shapes observed for this system. The states near the Fermi level are associated with the bulk of the sample. There is strong evidence of an insulating surface layer, which we ascribe to intermolecular electron correlations. These results simplify the interpretation of previous, apparently conflicting observations.

  • BMI referenced cut points for pedometer determined steps/day in adults
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Activity and Health. - : Human Kinetics. - 1543-3080 .- 1543-5474. ; 5:Suppl 1, s. 126-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:The goal of this study was to establish preliminary criterion-referenced cut points for adult pedometer-determined physical activity (PA) related to weight status defined by body mass index (BMI).Methods:Researchers contributed directly measured BMI and pedometer data that had been collected (1) using a Yamax-manufactured pedometer, (2) for a minimum of 3 days, (3) on ostensibly healthy adults. The contrasting groups method was used to identify age- and gender-specific cut points for steps/d related to BMI cut points for normal weight and overweight/obesity (defined as BMI <25 and ≥25 kg/m2, respectively). Results:Data included 3127 individuals age 18 to 94 years (976 men, age = 46.8 ± 15.4 years, BMI = 27.3 ± 4.9; 2151 women, age = 47.4 ± 14.9 years, BMI = 27.6 ± 6.4; all gender differences NS). Best estimated cut points for normal versus overweight/obesity ranged from 11,000 to 12,000 steps/d for men and 8000 to 12,000 steps/d for women (consistently higher for younger age groups). Conclusions:These steps/d cut points can be used to identify individuals at risk, or the proportion of adults achieving or falling short of set cut points can be reported and compared between populations. Cut points can also be used to set intervention goals, and they can be referred to when evaluating program impact, as well as environmental and policy changes.
