Trees of Knowledge : Science and the Shape of Genealogy

- This study investigates early employments of family trees in the modern sciences, in order to historicise their iconic status and now established uses, notably in evolutionary biology and linguistics. Moving beyond disciplinary accounts to consider the wider cultural background, it examines how early uses within the sciences transformed family trees as a format of visual representation, as well as the meanings invested in them.Historical writing about trees in the modern sciences is heavily tilted towards evolutionary biology, especially the iconic diagrams associated with Darwinism. Trees of Knowledge shifts the focus to France in the wake of the Revolution, when family trees were first put to use in a number of disparate academic fields. Through three case studies drawn from across the disciplines, it investigates the simultaneous appearance of trees in natural history, language studies, and music theory. Augustin Augier’s tree of plant families, Félix Gallet’s family tree of dead and living languages, and Henri Montan Berton’s family tree of chords served diverse ends, yet all exploited the familiar shape of genealogy.While outlining how genealogical trees once constituted a more general resource in scholarly knowledge production—employed primarily as pedagogical tools—this study argues that family trees entered the modern sciences independently of the evolutionary theories they were later made to illustrate. The trees from post-revolutionary France occasionally charted development over time, yet more often they served to visualise organic hierarchy and perfect order. In bringing this neglected history to light, Trees of Knowledge provides not only a rich account of the rise of tree thinking in the modern sciences, but also a pragmatic methodology for approaching the dynamic interplay of metaphor, visual representation, and knowledge production in the history of science.

- Success stories and heroic tales are recurrently investigated narrative genres in literature (Propp, 1998), journalism (Lule, 2001) and, not the least, in sports (Hellström, 2014). In sports, we repeatedly hear athletes explain their performance at half-time or give us reflections on a recently completed competition. However, these stories are not produced in a social vacuum; they are part of a discursive framework and a product of time and place. The trajectories for a legitimate success story is limited and specific storylines are repeated and holds a specific dramaturgical structure. The heroic story typically follows a temporal structure, from a beginning to an end, where events and performances function as phases of a narrative journey towards a defining triumph (Hoebeke et al. 2011). Which performances that constitutes the highlight of an athlete’s career will always be culturally determined, since cultures produces heroes according to their own specific values and traditions (Whannel, 2002). Thereby, the “personal” story is both a contextually specific narrative and a culturally shared narrative. Aims and empirical materialIn this paper, we are seeking to investigate how success stories in sports as a central part of the athletes identity work, and how these stories also serve as symbols for values and morals of a wider sporting society (Kilger, 2017). Many narrative scholars within the area of sports have been interested in retrospective studies of sports heroes or historical media studies of successful athletes (Hargreaves, 2000; Hellström, 2014; Whannel, 2002). In this study, we would like to pay particular attention to how personal narratives are built ´in-action´ and study which narrative elements are recurrent in the interviews and how is the own performance explained. Accordingly, we are interested in how such narratives of success and failure are co-constructed in the interview interaction and how they are structured. By investigating which master narratives that the participants recruit in their personal stories, this can help us to uncover shared normative storylines in elite sports. Moreover, we would like to illuminate how the athletes are using ´temporal-identity´ in the interviews as a way to construct a legitimate story of performance. The data set will include after-performance media interviews from Swedish television (SVT) during the FIS Cross Country World Championships. More specifically, we are seeking to analyze between 15-20 after-race television interviews with Swedish athletes during the FIS Cross Country World Championships 2019 in Falun, Sweden.

- BACKGROUND: The increasing rate of dementia and high health and social care costs call for effective measures to improve public health and enhance the wellbeing of people living with dementia and their relational networks. Most postdiagnostic services focus on the condition and the person with dementia with limited attention to the caring spouse or partner. The key focus of the study is to develop a guide for couples where one partner has a diagnosis of dementia. This couple management guide is delivered in the form of an app, DemPower.OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of DemPower and to assess the criteria for a full-integrated clinical and economic randomized control trial. DemPower couple management app will be introduced to couples wherein one partner has dementia.METHODS: The study will recruit 25 couples in the United Kingdom and 25 couples in Sweden. Couples will be given 3 months to engage with the app, and the amount of time taken to complete the guide (can be <3 or >3 months) will be reviewed. A set of outcome measures will be obtained at baseline and postintervention stages.RESULTS: The proposed study is at the recruitment phase. The DemPower app is being introduced to couples from consultation groups at a pretrial phase for identifying any bugs and exploring if any navigation challenges exist. The feasibility testing will begin in April 2018.CONCLUSIONS: The study will determine how much support couples need to engage with DemPower and whether or not they make use of it in their everyday lives. Exploring past achievements in last mile logistics research : A literature review

- PurposeThis paper aims to consolidate the knowledge in last mile logistics research, analyze the development of the research area, and provide future research directions.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review identified 154 peer-reviewed journal publications from 2001 to 2019 in 83 scientific journals contributing to last mile logistics research.FindingsMain topics in last mile logistics research have been identified, i.e. performance, optimization problems, innovative solutions, stakeholders, retail channels and infrastructure. The review further identifies last mile logistics, last mile fulfilment, last mile delivery, last mile distribution and last mile transportation as system components of the last mile system. The system components have been described based on the reviewed literature and build the basis for the last mile system suggested by the authors.Research limitations/implicationsThe study provides an overview of past achievements in last mile logistics research which helps scholars understanding the complex last mile system and positioning their research. Gaps have been identified building a basis for further research.Practical implicationsThis review has important implications for practitioners as it helps understanding the landscape of last mile logistics research and provides a new terminology. - Coincident with the rapid growth of omni-channel retailing, growing urbanization, changing consumer behavior, and increasing focus on sustainability, academic interest in the area of last mile logistics has significantly increased. The growth in academic publications has been tremendous, with three out of four articles appearing within the past five years. The influx of research spans multiple disciplines and various methodologies, underlining the complexity and fragmentation of last mile logistics research, which leads to a lack of unity in the understanding of the concept. We provide a systematic review and classification of the literature to provide a more coherent view of last mile logistics research. The review covers 155 peer-reviewed journal publications focusing on last mile logistics. Findings demonstrate that the literature embraces a diversity of aspects and facets that are classified into five themes: emerging trends and technologies, operational optimization, supply chain structures, performance measurement, and policy. Further, we propose a framework of last mile logistics literature that comprises five components and their interrelationships, namely, last mile logistics, last mile distribution, last mile fulfillment, last mile transport, and last mile delivery. The results provide a foundation for further development of this research area by proposing avenues for future research.

A sequential assessment of the preservation injury in porcine intestines

- Background: Clinical and experimental evidence strongly suggest that ischemia-reperfusion injury after intestinal transplantation has deleterious short-and long-term effects and finding means to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury is a major research area. The anatomical and physiological similarities between the human and porcine digestive tract favor its use as a preclinical model for translational research. Intriguingly, no systematic appraisal of the development of the intestinal preservation injury in pigs is available. Materials and methods: Intestinal procurement was performed in nine pigs using histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution as preservation fluid. Ileal biopsies were obtained after 8, 14, and 24 h of static cold storage (SCS), and the preservation injury was assessed morphologically (Chiu score) as well as on the molecular level. Tight junction (zonula occludens, claudin-3 and 4, tricellulin, and occludin) and adherens junctions (E-cadherin) proteins were studied using immunofluorescence and Western blot. Results: Eight hours of SCS induced minimal mucosal changes (Chiu grade 1) that advanced to significant subepithelial edema (Chiu grade 3) after 24 h; progressive Goblet cell depletion was also noted. Apoptosis (studied by cleaved caspase-3 staining significantly increased after 24 h of SCS. Significant molecular changes with decreasing expression of zonula occludens, tricellulin, and occludin were evident already after 8 h of SCS and continuously worsened. Claudin-3 and Claudin-4 and E-cadherin expression remained relatively unaltered during SCS. Conclusions: Important molecular alterations precede histologic changes during SCS of the porcine intestine and may be used as more sensitive injury markers than histologic changes in intestinal ischemia and transplantation. Effects of nine weeks isokinetic training on power, golf kinematics, and driver performance in pre-elite golfers

- BackgroundIt has previously been shown that isotonic strength training can improve driver performance among golfers, though few studies have investigated effects of strength training on swing kinematics together with driver performance. In this study we investigated whether isokinetic rotational training could improve driver performance and swing kinematic variables amongst elite golfers.MethodsTwenty competitive pre-elite golfers (handicap better than −3.0), 13 men and 7 women, were split into two groups, one group received the isokinetic power training (IK) alongside their normal isotonic pre-season strength-training and the other group continued with their normal isotonic pre-season strength-training regime (IT). The IK group completed 12 sessions of isokinetic power training on a standing rotation exercise (10% body weight at 1 m/s) and barbell squat (25 kg plus 10% body weight at 0.5 m/s). The IT group continued with their normal isotonic pre-season strength-training regime. Participants were tested for rotational power, lower body power, golf swing kinematics, and driver performance before and after a nine-week training period.ResultsAfter the nine-week training period both the IK and the IT groups increased their dominant side rotational force and power (effect sizes between 0.50–0.96) and magnitude based inference indicated that IK had a likely (> 80%) more beneficial increase in dominant side rotational force and power. For swing kinematics, IK had a likely (> 80%) more beneficial improvement in lead arm speed and acceleration compared to the IT group. For driver performance, IK had a possible (65%) beneficial effect on ball speed and likely (78%) beneficial effect on carry distance when compared to IT, whereas neither of the groups improved club head speed.ConclusionIn the present study on pre-elite golfers we found that 9 weeks of isokinetic training increased seated rotational force and power, peak arm speed and arm acceleration, ball speed, and carry distance more compared to isotonic training. Even though isokinetic training did not increase CHS, it did result in greater carry distance. © The Author(s). 2017
