  • Fuel mixing in bubbling fluidized beds: an experimental and numerical study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The 16th International Conference on Fluid Flow Technologies (CMFF15), Budapest, Hungary.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we study experimentally and numerically the behaviour of inert and fuel particles in a bubbling gas-solid fluidized bed. We use the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique to obtain detailed information on the dynamics of the inert particles. Furthermore, a digital image analysis technique is applied to track an illuminated tracer particle in the bed, in an attempt to reproduce the behaviour of the fuel particles. The results of the experimental work are presented in the form of the averaged velocity vectors of the inert and tracer particles. In addition, a numerical investigation is carried out where the inert bulk phase is modelled within the Eulerian-Eulerian framework and large fuel particles are tracked in a Lagrangian frame of reference. The stresses in an inert phase are modelled using the visco-plastic constitutive law (the so-called µ-rheology approach). The assumption that the inert particulate phase behaves as a visco-plastic fluid leads to a correct prediction of the movement of the fuel particles in the bed.

  • The Judge, the Politician and the Press : Newspaper Coverage and Criminal Sentencing Across Electoral Systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: American Economic Journal. - : American Economic Association. - 1945-7782 .- 1945-7790. ; 7:4, s. 103-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study how media environments interact with political institutions that structure the accountability of public officials. Specifically, we quantify media influence on the behavior of US state court judges. We analyze around 1.5 million criminal sentencing decisions from 1986 to 2006 and new data on the newspaper coverage of 9,828 trial court judges. Since newspaper coverage is endogenous, we use the match between newspaper markets and judicial districts to identify effects. We find that newspaper coverage significantly increases sentence length by nonpartisan elected judges for violent crimes. For partisan elected and appointed judges, there are no significant effects.

  • Sustainability operations management : An overview of research trends
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 62nd IIE Annual Conference and Expo 2012. - : Institute of Industrial Engineers. ; , s. 150-160
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several authors have been devoted their research projects to understand and map research topics and themes studied in the field of Industrial Engineering (IE), particularly those related to Operations Management (OM), aiming to contribute to the field scope delimitation, identifying for that purpose its main authors and their contribution for theory and practice. This study seeks to frame this knowledge regarding to sustainability research. Bibliometrics and statistics analysis were performed using information collected from 500 selected papers in nine international databases related to OM field, based on the keywords "Sustainability" and "Operations Management". Results point to a central set of nineteen authors whose work is strongly related to sustainability issues. All information are systematized generating descriptive statistics, network graphs and multivariate matrices for research topics, methodologies, outlets, main academic and normative references. Thus, this paper contributes with an overview of trends and gaps for future research in sustainability concerning operations management field.

  • Sustainable manufacturing in Industry 4.0 : an emerging research agenda
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 58:5, s. 1462-1484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This systematic review intends to identify how sustainable manufacturing research is contributing to the development of the Industry 4.0 agenda and for a broader understanding about the links between the Industry 4.0 and Sustainable Manufacturing by mapping and summarising existing research efforts, identifying research agendas, as well as gaps and opportunities for research development. A conceptual framework formed by the principles and technological pillars of Industry 4.0, sustainable manufacturing scope, opportunities previously identified, and sustainability dimensions, guided analysis of 35 papers from 2008–2018, selected by a systematic approach. Bibliometrics data and social network analysis complement results identifying how research is being organised and its respective research agendas, relevant publications, and status of the research lifecycle. Results point to that the current research is aligned with the goals defined by different national industrial programs. There are, however, research gaps and opportunities for field development, becoming more mature and having a significant contribution to fully developing the agenda of Industry 4.0.

  • The Organ Yearbook, volume 49 (2020). Recreating organs from documents
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this volume of The Organ Yearbook Wim S. Ros, Koos van de Linde and Winold van der Putten report on their research and the reconstruction of the positive depicted on ‘The adoration of the lamb’ by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Walter Chinaglia has recreated a pair of ‘organi di legno’ based on study of documents and research on the construction and acoustics of wooden pipes. George B. Stauffer shares further thoughts on Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 537. Peter van Tour reveals new evidence of imitative stock patterns in the teaching and improvisation of counterpoint in 18th-century Naples. Anna Steppler shows how Michael Praetorius set up his De Organographia as defence of the organ as the instrument of instruments. Dorothea Schröder and Krzysztof Urbaniak outline how Stellwagen’s organ for the Eutiner Schlosskapelle came about. The ‘Silbermann Archives’ have become publicly available: a short report and Marc Schaefer’s introduction highlight this important collection. Christopher Anderson portrays a schoolmaster in ‘Karl Straube as organ teacher’.

  • Effects of experimental snowmelt and rain on dispersal of six plant species
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ecohydrology. - : Wiley. - 1936-0584 .- 1936-0592. ; 9:8, s. 1464-1470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water flows affect dispersal of propagules of many plant species, and rivers and streams are therefore very important dispersal vectors. However, small water flows such as trough rain and snowmelt are much more common, but their effects on dispersal are barely studied. The importance of this form of dispersal deserves attention, especially when considering that climate change is predicted to change the amounts of rain and snow worldwide. Dispersal through melting snow and rain was addressed experimentally, using artificial soils mounted on slopes with different angles and subjected to a melting snow pack or an equivalent amount of dripping water. Seeds on the soil moved on average 3.02 cm (+/- 1.81 SE) in rain treatments and 0.23 cm (+/- 0.3 SE) in snowmelt treatments. Tracking plastic granules in field conditions further showed that snowmelt exhibited minimal dispersal capacity. Dispersal distances by rain were enhanced by increasing slope angles and with decreasing seed volume. Given that many species in cold environments have small seeds, dispersal by rain could provide an important (secondary) dispersal mechanism in these habitats.
