  • Connecting Europe: : Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey
  • 2009
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 1990s, in parallel with new media-related initiatives in the US and the Asia-Pacific region, the EU launched its own information society policies in an effort to become, the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. In addition to full members, the task of achieving a European Information Society for all was also expected of candidate countries, including Turkey. In Connecting Europe: Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey, taking the policy arena as a discursive space, Dr. Miyase Christensen explores the evolution of information society policies in the EU and Turkey. Globalization processes from the 1990s on are explored from the standpoint of contemporary media and communications theory and political economy. Conceptualizing the global and regional shifts in the context of social change and taking commodification and spatialization as entry points, the book presents a detailed account of some of the crucial developments to date (on both on the EU and Turkish sides) based upon in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. The factors that shape the political economy of the telecommunications and ICT sectors in both the EU and Turkey are increasingly complex, engendering new spaces of politics, economy and citizenship

  • From the Gezi Park Protests to the Akbelen Forest : Care in the Context of Democracy and Political Dissent
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Communication. - 1752-4032 .- 1752-4040. ; 18:1-2, s. 173-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay, a brief history of environmental protests in Turkey will be followed by a discussion connected to two central frameworks: the logic of extractivism and care. Specifically, we argue that analysis of events such as the recent protests in the Akbelen Forest, just as the Gezi Park protests over a decade ago, need to account for the fact that a great deal of environmentalism and environmental activism is linked to broader social and political critique, particularly in countries such as Turkey with what is described as a “neo-authoritarian” or “new authoritarian” administration. We argue that these events and the ways in which they have materialized point to the need to pay further attention to intersections such as narrated space and spaces of narrativity, in this particular case, vis-à-vis care, democracy and political dissent.

  • Design for all Senses. Accessible Spaces for Visually Impaired Citizens
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The central purpose of this study is to contribute to our knowledge of designing in a way that can be supported by the knowledge of the situation, and by the experience and expectations of those who are affected by design. In this case it means to enable us to find methods that can support the development of design actions to improve the accessibility of public open urban places for visually impaired persons, enhancing their perception and understanding of space, increasing their possibilities of orientating and taking independent decisions, and enabling them participate in the city life. To fully achieve this aim it is necessary to understand their rights as citizens, and also their particular needs and problems arising from the reduction or absence of vision. To achieve this aim three design projects for a central urban area in Brazil were developed involving different professionals working under different constraints. The specificity of each design situation brought the possibility of integrating and combining the different spheres of knowledge necessary to solve the problem from an Universal Design perspective. In this way, theoretical knowledge about spatial perception process, supported the understanding of the first-hand information given by visually impaired persons, and oriented the process of a differentiated spatial analysis based on a non-visual frame of reference. Consequently, the generated knowledge is essentially contextual, being the search not focused on the development of model solutions to be applied in different situations. What is searched is to support the analytical capacity and reflective attitude, which are necessary to solve complex problems such as designing for persons who have different needs and abilities. The initial intentions evolved into a more general questioning about architectural practice. This practice usually focuses on the technical and visually aesthetic dimensions of space, often leaving aside its other sensory attributes, and the life that animates space. Studying space in a different light, brought reflections about the need to consider the 'invisible' and usually disregarded non-visual attributes to improve spatial quality, not only in the design of accessible spaces for the visually impaired, but for all persons and for all senses.

  • Synoptic pressure patterns associated with major wind erosion events in southern Sweden (1973-1991)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Climate Research. - : Inter-Research Science Center. - 1616-1572 .- 0936-577X. ; 23:1, s. 51-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wind erosion causes severe damage on sandy soils in agricultural areas of north-west Europe. The weather conditions during erosion events are the result of the general atmospheric circulation and are key components in the erosion process. Principal component analysis (PCA) in combination with a non-hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted on de-seasonalized daily mean-sea-level pressure (MSLP) patterns of north-western Europe between 1973 and 1991 to determine the main synoptic types associated with wind erosion on sugar beet fields in Scania, southern Sweden. Cluster analysis of the PCA scores indicated that the observations should be grouped into 14 classes for which average MSLP patterns were computed. To assess the relationship between the patterns and wind erosion, 2 indices were computed. Index of Occurrence (10) is the ratio between the occurrence of the patterns during days with wind erosion and the occurrence during the entire wind erosion season. Index of Erosion Severity (IES) is computed by weighting the 10 with the area damaged by wind erosion associated with each pressure pattern. The IES identifies 2 pressure patterns that have significantly larger values than the other patterns. The most important is a pattern showing easterly flow over Scania, associated with 74 % (912 ha of 1235 ha) of the total damage in the study area. The second most important is a pattern showing westerly flow over Scania, associated with 5 % (63 ha) of the total damage. Both pressure patterns contain strong pressure gradients (in different directions) located over Scania. Depending on the location of the maximum gradient these patterns could be associated with wind erosion in other regions of north-western Europe.
