  • Increasing concentrations of iron in surface waters as a consequence of reducing conditions in the catchment area
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Biogeosciences. - 2169-8953 .- 2169-8961. ; 121:2, s. 479-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies report trends of strongly increasing iron (Fe) concentrations in freshwaters. Since Fe is a key element with a decisive role in the biogeochemical cycling of major elements, it is important to understand the mechanisms behind these trends. We hypothesized that variations in Fe concentration are driven mainly by redox dynamics in hydraulically connected soils. Notably, Fe(III), which is the favored oxidation state except in environments where microbial activity provide strong reducing intensity, has several orders of magnitude lower water solubility than Fe(II). To test our hypothesis, seasonal variation in water chemistry, discharge, and air temperature was studied in three Swedish rivers. Methylmercury and sulfate were used as indicators of seasonal redox changes. Seasonal variability in water chemistry, discharge, and air temperature in the Eman and Lyckeby Rivers implied that the variation in Fe was primarily driven by the prevalence of reducing conditions in the catchment. In general, high Fe concentrations were observed when methylmercury was high and sulfate was low, indicative of reducing conditions. The Fe concentrations showed no or weak relationships with variations in dissolved organic matter concentration and aromaticity. The seasonal variation in Fe concentration of the Ume river was primarily dependent on timing of the snowmelt in high- versus low-altitude areas of the catchment. There were long-term trends of increasing temperature in all catchments and also trends of increasing discharge in the southern rivers, which should increase the probability for anaerobic conditions in space and time and thereby increase Fe transport to the aquatic systems.

  • De ensamkommandes ensamhet : Unga migranters röster om exkludering och förutsättningar för integration i två norrländska landsbygdskommuner
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 1104-1420 .- 2003-5624. ; 30:3, s. 681-699
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to deepen our understanding of integration and exclusion of unaccompanied minors, by using a phenomenological, affective framework on their experiences and feelings. The article is based on qualitative interviews with 36 young people who came to two northern rural municipalities in Sweden without guardians during 2015. The interview situation raised questions about our research position, which is reflected upon in an autobiographical note. The study shows that various forms of loneliness and feelings of exclusion are a consistent theme in the young people's life stories. The loneliness often appears as situational and connected to the migration experience and the initial reception in the recipient country. The interviews also contain voices of great loss, but also concern, in relation to the family of origin. Sometimes a distrust of the interview situation could be discerned, where the young people's lives made a strong impression, and loneliness was embodied. The results open for questioning a medicalization of social and existential needs, but also of the problematic nature of a traditional researcher role in this context.

  • Relevant and Preferred Public Service : A study of user experiences and value creation in public transit
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Public Management Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1471-9037 .- 1471-9045. ; 18:1, s. 65-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When public service success is dependent upon creating value that attracts users, public managers can benefit from adopting private sector principles. This article draws on the theory of attractive quality and strategic management research to focus on the theoretical and managerial implications of how organizations' resource allocations affect user experiences. The present study shows how public transit organizations' achievement of twenty-five different service requirements affected their offerings' relevance and preference among 930 users. This article increases the understanding of how strategic choices and prioritization between various service requirements affect both the effectiveness and efficiency of (public) service offerings.

  • Disulfiram repurposing combined with nutritional copper supplement as add-on to chemotherapy in recurrent glioblastoma (DIRECT) : Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: F1000 Research. - : F1000Research. - 2046-1402. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Disulfiram (DSF) is a well-tolerated, inexpensive, generic drug that has been in use to treat alcoholism since the 1950s. There is now independent preclinical data that supports DSF as an anticancer agent, and experimental data suggest that copper may increase its anti-neoplastic properties. There is also some clinical evidence that DSF is a promising anticancer agent in extracranial cancers. In glioblastoma, DSF induced O 6-methylguanine methyltransferase (MGMT) inhibition may increase response to alkylating chemotherapy. A recent phase I study demonstrated the safety of DSF in glioblastoma patients when DSF was administered at doses below 500 mg/day together with chemotherapy. We plan to assess the effects of DSF combined with nutritional copper supplement (DSF-Cu) as an adjuvant to alkylating chemotherapy in glioblastoma treatment. Methods: In an academic, industry independent, multicenter, open label randomized controlled phase II/III trial with parallel group design (1:1) we will assess the efficacy and safety of DSF-Cu in glioblastoma treatment. The study will include 142 patients at the time of first recurrence of glioblastoma where salvage therapy with alkylating chemotherapy is planned. Patients will be randomized to treatment with or without DSF-Cu. Primary end-point is survival at 6 months. Secondary end-points are overall survival, progression free survival, quality of life, contrast enhancing tumor volume and safety.Discussion: There is a need to improve the treatment of recurrent glioblastoma. Results from this randomized controlled trial with DSF-Cu in glioblastoma will serve as preliminary evidence of the future role of DSF-Cu in glioblastoma treatment and a basis for design and power estimations of future studies. In this publication we provide rationale for our choices and discuss methodological issues.Trial registration: The study underwent registration in EudraCT 2016-000167-16 (Date: 30.03.2016,) and Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02678975 (Date: 31.01.2016) before initiating the study.

  • Regional variation i användningen av TTF vid glioblastombehandling : [Regional variation in usage of TTF (Optune)]
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - : Läkartidningen Förlag AB. - 0023-7205 .- 1652-7518. ; 120:120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The standard treatment of glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour, includes radiotherapy combined with temozolomide. Based on a randomised trial, showing five months increased survival, TTF has been introduced in the management of patients with good performance status. Data from the Swedish national quality registry for CNS tumours have been analysed for TTF usage. The results demonstrate that 65 percent of the patients accepted treatment with TTF. More than half of the treated patients interrupted treatment due to low compliance or their own wish. Median treatment time was 164 days, with a range from 0 to 774 days. There was a large variation between different regions in how many patients were offered TTF treatment. A non-significant trend to better survival was seen for the group of TTF-treated patients compared to individually matched controls. In summary, TTF is a new treatment for glioblastoma, with potential to prolong survival also in real world patients. Today, the treatment is not offered equally to all patients, despite national guidelines.
