  • The Notions of Otherness and Critical Construction Sites : Theorizing Professional Boundaries within
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: XVIII ISA World Congress of Sociology. ; , s. 847-847
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is about social and symbolic boundaries (Lamont & Molnar 2002). The aim of this paper is to suggest a theoretical way to understand constructions of ‘Otherness’ within professional boundaries. I draw on the empirical case of the doctors with immigrant backgrounds in the Swedish medical profession and use the notion of critical construction site by Cornell & Hartmann 2007.In order to bridge the gap between structure and agency the study started with a review of the Swedish research literature in order to see how ‘ethnicity’, ‘race and ‘Otherness’ had been received in research. In this review I found that ‘Otherness’ is often something that is ascribed to patients and not doctors. I then went on reviewing the professional debate around the issue of doctors with immigrant backgrounds in Sweden I found something what I theorized as underlying assumptions of ‘the Other’. This ethnic ‘Otherness’ was not about doctors ‘ethnicity’ nor about ‘race’ instead it had to do with that the doctors had immigrated and was perceived as something sable and predetermined. This notion of ‘Otherness’ was later also found in interviews with doctors with immigrant backgrounds. In the interviews I expectantly found stories of discrimination, prejudice and even racism but I also found stories of agency, and coping strategies where the ‘Otherness’ they were ascribed with was used a way to construct their role in the Swedish health care system; to take care of patients with immigrant backgrounds. The paper theorise this as doctors with immigrant backgrounds seem to be using a primordial definition of ‘the Other’ in circumstantial ways in order to find their place within the Swedish medical profession which I argue, is a critical construction site.

  • Effect of nonrelativistic interface Hamiltonian on optical transitions in broken-gap heterostructures
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the Burt-Foreman envelope function theory and an eight-band k p model, we have extended our previous work on optical transitions in InAs/GaSb quantum wells grown along the [001] direction by completing the interface Hamiltonian with the inclusion of its nonrelativistic part. We found a substantial contribution of the nonrelativistic term to the originally forbidden spin-flip optical transitions. However, this nonrelativistic term produces only a minor modification of the lateral optical anisotropy. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

  • Global Markets, Corporate Assurances, and the Legitimacy of State Intervention : Perceptions of Distant Labor and Environmental Problems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: American Sociological Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0003-1224 .- 1939-8271. ; 87:3, s. 383-414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collective perceptions of harm and impropriety channel the evolution of capitalism, as shown by research on the moral boundaries of markets. But how are boundaries perceived when harms are distant and observers face competing claims from advocacy organizations and corporations? These conditions are particularly salient in global supply chains, where private voluntary initiatives have been formed to address labor exploitation and environmental degradation. We argue that state intervention is now on the rise and that popular judgments about state intervention carry new insights for the sociology of markets, morality, policy, and globalization. Analyzing data from a conjoint survey experiment, we find that distant labor and environmental problems (e.g., forced labor, natural resource depletion) provoke varied levels of interest in state intervention as well as different justifications for state intervention. We also find an asymmetry of influence by strategic actors: transnational advocacy frames shape judgments to some degree, but they fall flat or backfire among conservatives. Corporate promises of reform reduce the perceived importance of state intervention—across political-ideological divides and regardless of credibility. Moving beyond stylized pro-/anti-trade attitudes, these findings reveal implicit logics of a contested moral field and the legitimacy of state intervention at a formative moment.

  • Influence of Glycosylation on Interfacial Properties of Recombinant Mucins : Adsorption, Surface Forces, and Friction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society. - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 33:18, s. 4386-4395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interfacial properties of two brush-with-anchor mucins, C-P55 and C-PSLex, have been investigated at the aqueous solution/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) interface. Both are recombinant mucin-type fusion proteins, produced by fusing the glycosylated mucin part of P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSLG-1) to the Fc part of a mouse immunoglobulin in two different cells. They are mainly expressed as dimers upon production. Analysis of the O-glycans shows that the C-PSLex mucin has the longer and more branched side chains, but C-P55 has slightly higher sialic acid content. The adsorption of the mucins to PMMA surfaces was studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. The sensed mass, including the adsorbed mucin and water trapped in the layer, was found to be similar for these two mucin layers. Atomic force microscopy with colloidal probe was employed to study surface and friction forces between mucin-coated PMMA surfaces. Purely repulsive forces of steric origin were observed between mucin layers on compression, whereas a small adhesion was detected between both mucin layers on decompression. This was attributed to chain entanglement. The friction force between C-PSLex-coated PMMA is lower than that between C-P55-coated PMMA at low loads, but vice versa at high loads. We discuss our results in terms of the differences in the glycosylation composition of these two mucins.

  • Multi-level Europeans and welfare state attitudes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: paper prepared for the Spring Conference of the Swedish Network for European Studies in Political Science, Göteborg 12-12 March 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The development of the European welfare states has been immensely connected to the idea of the nation state and national identity. National identity has made it possible to override subgroup (e.g., class, religious or regional) interests, thus providing a reason for developing and maintaining a welfare state. If this is the case, then the development of a territorial multi-level system in Europe can be seen as challenging. The political importance of state territorial boundaries has decreased, as the EU and sub-state territorial levels have become more powerful, and in this multi-level system there is furthermore increased salience of territorial identities at all levels from local to the EU. At the same time, there are ongoing territorial changes affecting the welfare policy area too, e.g. devolution and discussions about a possible future “social Europe”. In order to address the overall question of how this connection between identity and welfare policy can be expected to function in a multi-level system, this paper shifts the focus from the system-level to the individuals who live in it. In other words, it investigates how multi-level territorial attachments can influence welfare attitudes. In so doing, theoretical expectations about the relationship between territorial attachments and welfare state attitudes in a multi-level system are developed, complementing other well-known theoretical explanations. In addition, empirical analyses are conducted, using both comparative European opinion data and more detailed survey studies from Sweden.

  • Fragmentation of methyl chloride studied by partial positive and negative ion-yield spectroscopy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 126:8, s. 084309-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors present partial-ion-yield experiments on the methyl chloride molecule excited in the vicinity of the C12p and C1s inner shells. A large number of fragments, cations produced by dissociation or recombination processes, as well as anionic species, have been detected. Although the spectra exhibit different intensity distributions depending on the core-excited atom, general observations include strong site-selective fragmentation along the C-Cl bond axis and a strong intensity dependence of transitions involving Rydberg series on fragment size.
