  • Looking Beyond the Horizon and Other Issues in Company Valuation
  • 1998
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This essay deals with a number of issues concerning company valuation models with special reference to the so-called McKinsey valuation model, presented in Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies by Tom Copeland, Tim Koller, and Jack Murrin. Special attention is given to horizon value problems, and we investigate the many hidden assumptions inherent in continuing value formulas. Different equity valuation approaches are also commented upon, and we develop a procedure that yields equivalence between the discounted free cash flow approach and the discounted dividend approach. The procedure is shown to hold under quite general conditions, also when the capital structure is non-constant. Finally, the traditional free cash flow approach, our modified free cash flow approach and the dividend valuation approach are all applied to a real-world company, and it is shown that the latter two yield exactly the same value.

  • Protocol description of the HOVON 141/VISION trial : a prospective, multicentre, randomised phase II trial of ibrutinib plus venetoclax in patients with creatinine clearance ≥30 mL/min who have relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (RR-CLL) with or without TP53 aberrations

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Introduction Literature is scarce on the combination treatment of ibrutinib and venetoclax (IV) is scarce in relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (RR-CLL). Especially, the possibility of stopping ibrutinib in RR-CLL patients in deep remission is unclear. Methods and analysis In the HOVON 141/VISION trial, patients with RR-CLL are treated with 12 cycles of IV after a short induction with ibrutinib. Patients reaching undetectable minimal residual disease (uMRD) after 12 cycles of IV are randomised 1:2 to continue ibrutinib or stop treatment. The persistence of uMRD after stopping IV is studied. In addition, in patients who become positive for MRD again after stopping, IV treatment is reinitiated. The efficacy of this approach with regard to progression-free survival 12 months after randomisation is the primary endpoint of the study. Ethics and dissemination This protocol respects the Helsinki declaration and has been approved by the ethical committee of the Amsterdam Medical Center. Study findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed papers. All patients who fulfil the inclusion criteria and no-exclusion criteria, and have signed the informed consent form are included in the study.

  • Borgerskap och burskap : Om näringsprivilegier och borgerskapets institutioner i Stockholm 1820-1846
  • 2001
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In 1846 the guilds were abolished in Sweden. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the abolishment of guilds and guild-like institutions was due to a de facto breakdown of the guild system in Stockholm during the period 1820 to 1846. Previous research has claimed that the new trade legislation that followed the abolishment of guilds more or less codified an already established fact. The findings in this study contradict this conclusion. The guild system was apparently working in accordance with the law. The legal abolishment of the guilds therefore was a major institutional innovation in Swedish society, and not an already established fact. The central argument in explaining the persistence of the guild system is that the city burghers, a privileged group with special rights to exercise trade and handicrafts in the Swedish towns, had gradually strengthened their political power both on the national and local level. They were able to exercise control over local institutions to protect their privileges. Since their privileges were granted to them by the King as a collective, cooperation and moderation within the community were necessary to achieve the collective benefits. The burghers' incentives to defend their privileges are analyzed based on a contractarian perspective and using a method of institutional analysis. The burghers' strong influence over local institutions made it possible for them to stop any breakdown of the guild system, which therefore remained intact until its formal abolishment in 1846.

  • ESES, A European Master's Program In Solar Energy Engineering
  • 2004
  • In: Eurosun 2004. - Freiuburg, Germany.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The first group of students was admitted to the European Solar Engineering School, a master’s level two-semester program at Dalarna University in Sweden, in August 1999. Now that the fifth group is all but through their year, some conclusions from our experiences are possible to draw. The paper gives the background of ESES, some information about how the program is arranged, and also some of the ESES staff experiences.
