  • "If you don't behave, you're in real shit, you don't get outside the doors"-a phenomenological hermeneutic study of adolescents' lived experiences of the socio-spatial environment of involuntary institutional care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-Being. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, according to law, adolescents with extensive psychosocial problems, substance abuse or criminal behaviour can be cared for in institutions. The two-fold aim of these institutions (to rehabilitate and incarcerate) puts special demands to their socio-spatial context. Purpose: To elucidate adolescents' lived experiences of the socio-spatial environment at special youth homes run by the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SiS) in Sweden. Methods: Data collected through Photovoice and analysed employing a phenomenological hermeneutical method. Fourteen adolescents (age 15-19) were asked to photograph their environment, and this was followed up by in-depth interviews. Results: Two themes emerged from the material: the dense walls of institutional life and create and capture the caring space. The socio-spatial environment can be seen as an additional "other" that distances the adolescents and the staff from one another. Negotiating with their behaviour, the adolescents strive to present themselves as worthy of increased degrees of freedom and ultimately access to the desired outside life. Conclusions: In an institutional setting dominated by a security and criminal justice logic, words appear to have less impact than the environment. The adolescents appear to understand themselves through the socio-spatial other, causing reinforced feelings of social exclusion.

  • Sambandet mellan bostaden, bostadsområdet och hälsan
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Hemma Väst. Anders Carlander & Björn Rönnerstrand (red.). - Göteborg : SOM-institutet. - 0284-4788. ; , s. 89-99
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences in child welfare assessments in a sample of 84 young people in secure institutional care in Sweden 2021
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Abstract till FORSA/NASSW 2024 international conference, Gothenburg June 2024..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background In Sweden youths with behaviors considered destructive by society such as substance use, or criminality are placed in secure institutional care. While the prevalence of so-called norm-breaking behavior among these youths is well-known, knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is scarce. ACEs are defined as potentially traumatizing events occurring in childhood (0-17 years), for example parental separation, violence, or neglect. Symptoms of traumatization and of norm-breaking behavior overlap and research show that ACEs are associated with developing chronic health problems, substance use, and future unemployment. To avoid consolidating the youths as antisocial, and to provide them with adequate support it is of great importance to consider their potential experiences of ACEs. Aim, material and method The abstract relates to a study examining the prevalence of ACEs in child welfare assessments in a sample of 84 youths in secure institutional care in Sweden 2021. The documentation has been analyzed applying manifest quantitative content analysis using ACEs established in previous research as deductive categories. Findings and conclusion The presentation will contain figures on the prevalence of ACEs from the material, and reflections on the overlap between so-called norm-breaking behavior and potential traumatization. The presentation points to the importance to not only focus on the norm-breaking behavior of the youth, but also on the family conditions, to offer the right support and to avoid further responsibilisation.

  • To be a risk or at risk – Discourses and Legitimizing Practices in Child Welfare Assessments of Youths in Secure Institutional Care
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Abstract till den nationella paperkonferensen i socialt arbete, NaPSa, Östersund, mars 2024..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Sweden youths with behaviours considered destructive by society such as substance use, or criminality are placed in secure institutional care after a court decision. While the young peoples’ problems are well-known, knowledge of what determines social service workers to suggest placement in secure institutional care and how it is legitimized is scarce. This paper relates to a study exploring discourses influencing the social services' advocacy for placement in secure institutional care. The material consists of child welfare assessments in a sample of 84 youths placed in secure institutional care in Sweden 2021. The analysis draws on Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis, thus both what is said in the assessments and how it is said are analyzed, putting focus on the text, the discursive practices, and the social practices. Preliminary findings suggest the young people being presented both as being a risk and at risk. Although the youth's often difficult home conditions are initially addressed, the assessments follow a linguistic shift of risk which put forward a “de-historicization” where the youth's behaviour becomes detached from previous experiences, and from structural conditions. Linguistic and rhetorical legitimation techniques such as juridified, medicalized, and bureaucratic language, and objectification of the youth are used, as is metaphors signalling acute and severeness. The article shows how language and discursive practices affect social practices, but also how the assessments and the social service workers’ discretionary space are products of their context, in this case the legal and social practices of secure institutional care.

  • Ungdomshemmens fysiska miljö till stöd för ungdomars hälsa och välbefinnande – en negligerad forskningsfråga
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 96:6, s. 810-819

  • Space and place for health and care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 15:sup1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This discussion paper aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the state of the art of research engaged with conceptual matters of space and place for health and care. Method: The authors, who represent a variety of academic disciplines, discuss and demonstrate the conceptual recognition of space and place in research in health and caring sciences building upon own work and experience. Results: To explore the concepts of space and place for health and care is a research pursuit of utmost importance, and should be made through transdisciplinary research collaborations, whereby spatial theories from various disciplines could be communicated to cultivate truly novel and well-informed research. Furthermore, engaging with relational and topological perceptions of space and place poses methodological challenges to overcome in future research on health and care. Conclusions: We argue that there is a need for accelerating spatially informed research on health and care that is informed by current theories and perspectives on space and place, and transdisciplinary research collaborations are a means to achieving this. © 2020 The Author(s).
