  • To be an immigrant and a patient in Sweden : A study with an individualised perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Co-Action Publishing. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 5:3, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim is to describe how experiences of being an immigrant can influencethe situation when becoming a patient in Swedish health care. A hermeneutic approach was used. Sixteen persons born in non-Nordic countries were interviewed. The data was analysed with an empirical hermeneutical method. The findings indicate that positive experiences (i.e., establishing oneself in a new home country) enhance the possibilities of taking part in caring situations and vice versa. Hence, there is a need for individually adapted care that takes one's whole life situation into consideration. Consequently, it is suggested that the concept, “cultural competence” merely serves the purpose of illuminating caregivers’ need for categorisation. It does not illuminate individual needs in a caring situation.

  • Electroactive nanofibrillated cellulose aerogel composites with tunable structural and electrochemical properties
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 22:36, s. 19014-19024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents conductive aerogel composites of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and polypyrrole (PPy) with tunable structural and electrochemical properties. The conductive composites are prepared by chemically polymerizing pyrrole onto TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers dispersed in water and the various nanostructures are obtained employing different drying methods. Supercritical CO2 drying is shown to generate high porosity aerogel composites with the largest surface area (246 m(2) g(-1)) reported so far for a conducting polymer-paper based material, whereas composites produced by ambient drying attain high density structures with mechanical properties significantly surpassing earlier reported values for cellulose-conducting polymer composites when normalized with respect to the content of reinforcing cellulose (Young's modulus = 0.51 GPa, tensile strength = 10.93 MPa and strain to failure = 2.5%). Electrochemical measurements clearly show that differences in the porosity give rise to dramatic changes in the voltammetric and chronoamperometric behavior of the composites. This indicates that mass transport rate limitations also should be considered, in addition to the presence of a distribution of PPy redox potentials, as an explanation for the shapes of the voltammetric peaks. A specific charge capacity of similar to 220 C g(-1) is obtained for all composites in voltammetric experiments performed at a scan rate of 1 mV s(-1) and this capacity is retained also at scan rates up to 50 mV s(-1) for the high porosity composites. The composites should be applicable as electrodes in structural batteries and as membranes in ion exchange applications requiring exchange membranes of high mechanical integrity or high porosity.

  • Reflective team -. a clinical intervention for sustainable care improvement
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Reflective Practice. - : Routledge. - 1462-3943 .- 1470-1103. ; 15:3, s. 378-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to illustrate conditions for the successful implementation of a work model for sustainable care improvement, called Reflecting Team (RT). For this study team leaders were trained in a caring science education programme to lead the reflective processes, and RTs were introduced into two caring contexts. Within the study professional caregivers involved in the implementation of RT were interviewed, and their statements were interpreted according to a life world hermeneutic approach. Dialectic themes emerged that established four prerequisites for successful implementation of RT. A comprehensive understanding suggests that the lowest common denominator for the four prerequisites is mutual interaction. Thus, an atmosphere of sharing was found to be necessary. The challenge of creating such an atmosphere in a caring unit is the focus of the discussion section.

  • Stability and biocompatibility of a library of polyester dendrimers in comparison to polyamidoamine dendrimers
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 33:7, s. 1970-1981
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dendrimers can be designed for several biomedical applications due to their well-defined structure, functionality and dimensions. The present study focused on the in vitro biocompatibility evaluation of a library of aliphatic polyester dendrimers based on 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) with an overall diameter of 0.5-2 nm. In addition, dendrimers with two different chemical surfaces (neutral with hydroxyl end group and anionic with carboxylic end group) and dendrons corresponding to the structural fragments of the dendrimers were evaluated. Commercial polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM) with cationic (amine) or neutral (hydroxyl) end group were also included for comparison. Cell viability studies were conducted in human cervical cancer (HeLa) and acute monocytic leukemia cells (THP.1) differentiated into macrophage-like cells as well as in primary human monocyte-derived macrophages. Excellent biocompatibility was observed for the entire hydroxyl functional bis-MPA dendrimer library, whereas the cationic, but not the neutral PAMAM exerted dose-dependent cytotoxicity in cell lines and primary macrophages. Studies to evaluate material stability as a function of pH, temperature, and time, demonstrated that the stability of the 4th generation hydroxyl functional bis-MPA dendrimer increased at acidic pH. Taken together, bis-MPA dendrimers are degradable and non-cytotoxic to human cell lines and primary cells.

  • Access to social capital and risk of HIV infectionin Bukoba urban district, Kagera region, Tanzania
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Archives of Public Health. - : BioMed Central. - 0778-7367 .- 2049-3258. ; 72:38, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND:Kagera is one of the 22 regions of Tanzania mainland, which has witnessed a decline in HIV prevalence during the past two decades; decreasing from 24% in 1987 to 4.7 in 2009 in the urban district of Bukoba. Access to social capital, both structural and cognitive, might have played a role in this development. The aim was to examine the association between individual structural and cognitive social capital and socio-economic characteristics and the likelihood of being HIV infected.METHODS:We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of 3586 participants, of which 3423 (95%) agreed to test for HIV following pre-test counseling. The HIV testing was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibody detection tests. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to estimate the impact of socio-economic factors, individual structural and cognitive social capital and HIV sero-status.RESULTS:Individuals who had access to low levels of both structural and cognitive individual social capital were four and three times more likely to be HIV positive compared to individuals who had access to high levels. The associations remained statistically significant for both individual structural and cognitive social capital after adjusting for potential confounding factors such as age, sex, marital status, occupation, level of education and wealth index (OR =8.6, CI: 5.7-13.0 and OR =2.4, CI: 1.6-3.5 for individual structural and cognitive social capital respectively). For both women and men access to high levels of individual structural and cognitive social capital decreased the risk of being HIV infected. This study confirms previous qualitative studies indicating that access to structural and cognitive social capital is protective to HIV infection.CONCLUSIONS:We suggest that policy makers and programme managers of HIV interventions may consider strengthening and facilitating access to social capital as a way of promoting HIV preventive information and interventions in order to reduce new HIV infections in Tanzania.
