  • Small-angle neutron scattering, electron paramagnetic resonance, electrophoretic NMR, and time-resolved fluorescence quenching studies of sodium dodecyl sulfate and tetra(ethylene oxide) dodecyl ether mixed surfactant micelles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 108:4, s. 1351-1356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ), electrophoretic NMR (ENMR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) have been used to study mixed micelles formed from the two dodecyl tailed surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and tetra(ethylene oxide) dodecyl ether. By combining the TRFQ and EPR techniques, one is essentially able to calculate the SANS data, lending significant weight to the micelle characteristics thus obtained. EPR reports the degree of hydration of the surfactant headgroups; TRFQ, the micelle aggregation number and inter alia the volume of the hydrophobic core. Given the physical dimensions of the surfactant, i.e., alkyl chain length, headgroup volumes, etc., it is then possible to calculate the micelle ellipticity and shell thickness. The ENMR studies provide a rather different but complementary estimate of the ionic character of the micelle. With increasing nonionic content, the aggregation number increases, the micelle becomes more elliptical, and the headgroup region of the micelle becomes less hydrated and significantly more viscous. The degree of sodium counterion dissociation shows an initial small decrease with decreasing SDS micelle mole fraction but subsequently increases, reflecting the interplay between the electrostatic character of the micelle surface and the micelle curvature.

  • Recoil decay tagging of gamma rays in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus Os-162
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 70:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient nucleus Os-162, produced in the Cd-106(Ni-58,2n) reaction, has been studied using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal plane spectrometer. gamma-ray transitions in Os-162 have been assigned for the first time through the application of the recoil decay tagging technique. The excitation energy of the 2(+) state and the tentative energy of the 8(+) state are discussed in terms of the systematic energy trends as the N=82 shell gap is approached.

  • Increased remissions from one course for intermediate-dose cytosine arabinoside and idarubicin in elderly acute myeloid leukaemia when combined with cladribine. A randomized population-based phase II study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 123:5, s. 810-818
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cladribine has single-drug activity in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), and may enhance the formation of the active metabolite (ara-CTP) of cytosine arabinoside (ara-C). To evaluate the feasibility of adding intermittent cladribine to intermediate-dose ara-C (1 g/m(2)/2 h) b.i.d. for 4 d with idarubicin (CCI), we performed a 2:1 randomized phase II trial in AML patients aged over 60 years. Primary endpoints were time to recovery from cytopenia and need for supportive care following the first course. Sixty-three patients (median 71 years, range 60-84 years) were included, constituting 72% of all eligible patients. Toxicity was limited, with no differences between the treatment arms. The early toxic death rate was 11%. The median time to recovery from neutropenia and thrombocytopenia was 22 and 17 d from the start of course no. 1, respectively, and the requirement for platelet and red cell transfusions was four and eight units respectively. Patients had a median of 8 d with fever over 38degreesC, and 17 d with intravenous antibiotic treatment. The overall complete remission (CR) rate was 62%, with 51% CR from one course of CCI in comparison with 35% for the two-drug therapy (P = 0.014). The median survival with a 2-year follow-up was 14 months, and the 2-year survival was over 30%, with no differences between the treatment arms. Considering the median age and our population-based approach, the overall results are encouraging.
