    • We have extended recently reported hyperfine structure studies of 2D states in alkali atoms to several new states. The 2D states were populated in a two-step excitation scheme, involving a conventional RF lamp and a cw tunable dye laser. Using level crossing and optical double resonance techniques we have determined the hyperfine structure of the 8 2D3/2,5/a states in 8TRb and the 11, 12, 13, 14 aD3/a,5/a states in 133Cs. Further, g, factors for several of these states were determined.

    • The hyperfine coupling constants and the natural radiative lifetimes of the 5 p 2 P 3/2 and 6 p 2 P 3/2 levels of K 39 were determined in a level crossing experiment on an enriched K 39 sample in a sealed-off resonance cell. The following results were obtained: ----- -- a (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 1.973 (12) MHz -- a (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.886 (8) MHz ----- -- b (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.870 (18) MHz -- b (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.370 (15) MHz ----- -- Ï(5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 133 (3) ns -- Ï(6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 310 (15) ns ----- Considering the influence of core polarization on the magnetic hyperfine interaction and applying a Sternheimer correction, fairly consistent values of the electric quadrupole moment Q are obtained from the first three levels of the np 2 P 3/2 sequence. We find Q (K 39 ) = +0.059 (6) barn.

    • The natural radiative lifetimes of some excited Bi I levels belonging to the 6 p 2 7 s and the 6 p 2 6 d configurations have been determined by analyzing Hanle depolarization curves obtained in an atomic beam experiment on the 100% abundant isotope Bi 209 ( I =9/2).     • By combining recent level crossing data with the results from a modified atomic beam experiment by Buck, Rabi, and Senitzky in 1956, a Landégj factor deviating about 0.6% from the LS-value -1.3341 is obtained for the 6p2P3/2 level of Cs133. As this large deviation is difficult to explain, a remeasurement of the hyperfine structure of this level was performed by the zero field optical double resonance method. For the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole interaction constantsa andb we obtain$$a(6p{}^2P_{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} ) = 50.31(5)MHz,b(6p{}^2P_{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} ) = - 0.30(33)MHz.$$ With these new values agj factor of -1.3341 (15) is deduced for the 6p2P3/2 level of Cs133, in agreement with the LS-value.

    • Using the level crossing technique with parallel magnetic and electric fields the tensor polarizability of the 7 p 2 P 3/2 level in Rb 87 and the 8 p 2 P 3/2 level in Cs 133 was measured with the results α 2 (7 p 2 P 3/2 Rb 87 ) = -3.2 (2) MHz (kV/cm) 2 and α 2 (8 p 2 P 3/2 Rb 133 ) = -7.6 (3) MHz (kV/cm) 2 Theoretical values, calculated with the Coulomb approximation of Bates and Damgaard, agree very well with the experimental results.
