  • Leadership characteristics and Hoshin Kanri in small and medium sized enterprises
  • 2016
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper aims at contribute to an understanding of how present leadership characteristics influence the implementation of HK in manufacturing SMEs. The research is based around two case companies where the ideas of HK was implemented in an action research project. The leadership characteristics associated with HK include characteristics such as supporting, coaching, challenging, involving top management and co-workers. The findings show that HK leadership characteristics have similarities with lean leadership and developmental leadership characteristics. The two cases have successfully began to implement HK and the CEO’s in both cases have a present leadership style resembling of developmental leadership.

  • Tasquinimod inhibits prostate cancer growth in bone through alterations in the bone microenvironment.
  • 2016
  • In: The Prostate. - : Wiley. - 1097-0045 .- 0270-4137. ; 76:4, s. 383-393
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Tasquinimod (ABR-215050) is an orally active quinoline-3-carboxamide analog that inhibits occurrence of experimental metastasis and delays disease progression of castration resistant prostate cancer in humans. Its mechanism of action is not fully elucidated, but previous studies show immunomodulatory and anti-angiogenic effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the tumor inhibiting effect of tasquinimod in bone of castrated mice as well as to elucidate its working mechanism related to bone microenvironment.

  • Introducing the Hoshin Kanri strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs
  • 2016
  • In: Management Decision. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0025-1747 .- 1758-6070. ; 54:10, s. 2507-2523
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic principles and introduction of the Hoshin Kanri (HK) strategic management system, as related to the management practices in manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approach – This paper reports the findings from the introduction of HK to four manufacturing SMEs by following an assistance support-based research approach where teams of coaches and researchers observed and learned from the introduction phase. The overall design of the project is theory building and learning oriented.Findings – It is suggested that the successful introduction of a strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs has to balance the inherent level of formalization therein, with the individual company’s management practices. Based on HK as the strategic management system, pDCA is proposed as an alternative approach to the introduction, matching differences in management practices.Research limitations/implications – The explorative nature of this research provides room for subsequent studies by elaborating the knowledge on the introduction of strategic management systems in SMEs.Practical implications – Awareness of the existing managerial practices is essential when introducing a new strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs. Such awareness is the starting point of customizing the introduction, so that proper levels of engagement and flexibility can be balanced with increasing systematic formalization, and optimized adequacy.Originality/value – Following an assistance support-based research approach the result of this research project is summarized in the iterative pDCA model emphasizing engagement and flexibility when incrementally introducing strategic management systems in SMEs. This model addresses a hitherto under-researched topic in strategic management.

  • Cucumis omissus sp nov (Cucurbitaceae) from southern Arabia and Ethiopia and its phylogenetic position
  • 2018
  • In: Nordic Journal of Botany. - : Wiley. - 0107-055X .- 1756-1051. ; 36:10
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The new species Cucumis omissus Thulin from Yemen, Oman and Ethiopia is described and illustrated. According to phylogenetic analyses based mainly on nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences and chloroplast trnG sequences, the new species is sister to C. hastatus from Somalia and Ethiopia. A map showing the distributions of both C. omissus and C. hastatus is provided and morphological differences between these two species are highlighted. Cucumis omissus has been confused with C. pustulatus and C. prophetarum in the literature and in herbaria, and morphological differences from these two species are provided as well. Oreosyce africana is nested within Cucumis in this, as well as in several previous studies. We clarify that when O. africana is treated as a Cucumis, its correct name is C. subsericeus.

  • Phylogeny and generic delimitation in Molluginaceae, new pigment data in Caryophyllales, and the new family Corbichoniaceae
  • 2016
  • In: Taxon. - : Wiley. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 65:4, s. 775-793
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The circumscription of Molluginaceae has changed radically in recent years, with Corbichonia being moved to Lophiocarpaceae, Limeum to Limeaceae, Macarthuria to Macarthuriaceae and all species of Hypertelis, except the type, to Kewa in Kewaceae. In a broad analysis of core Caryophyllales using plastid trnK-matK and rbcL, sequences, the position of Molluginaceae in a strict sense as sister to the Portulacineae Glade is corroborated, as are the positions of Corbichonia, Limeum and Kewa outside the family. The phylogeny of Molluginaceae is reconstructed based on trnK-matK and nuclear ITS sequences of about half of the currently recognized species in the family and with representatives from all recognized genera. Mollugo is found to be polyphyletic and a new taxonomy for the family with 11 genera is proposed. Mollugo in its new restricted sense is a mainly American genus of about 15 species, including M. ulei comb. nov., previously placed in the monotypic Glischrothamnus. The Australian and Asian genus Trigastrotheca is resurrected for T. molluginea, T. pentaphylla comb. nov. and T. stricta comb. nov. The name Paramollugo nom. nov. is proposed for the Mollugo nudicaulis group and the combinations P. angustifolia comb. nov., P. cuneifolia comb. nov., P. decandra comb. nov., P. deltoidea comb. nov., P. navassensis comb. nov. and P. nudicaulis comb. nov. are made. Hypertelis is expanded to include, besides the type H. spergulacea, also H. cerviana comb. nov., H. fragilis comb. nov., H. umbellata comb. nov. and H. walteri comb. nov. In Pharnaceum, the new combination P. namaquense comb. nov. is made, Hypertelis longifolia is treated as a synonym of P. lineare and Mollugo tenella as a synonym of P. subtile. Corbichonia is proposed to be treated as a family of its own, Corbichoniaceae fam. nov. Several names are lectotypified, including the Linnaean Mollugo pentaphylla and M stricta. An anthocyanin is reported for the first time from Simmondsiaceae. The detection of anthocyanins in members of Kewaceae and Molluginaceae agree with previous reports and corroborate the view that these families represent reversals from betalains to anthocyanins. The report of an anthocyanin in Limeaceae, previously regarded as unpigmented, apparently represents a newly detected reversal from betalains to anthocyanins in this family.

  • Phylogeny and Systematics of Kewa (Kewaceae)
  • 2018
  • In: Systematic Botany. - 0363-6445 .- 1548-2324. ; 43:3, s. 689-700
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The genus Kewa in the monogeneric family Kewaceae (Caryophyllales) is revised. Six species are recognized, K. acida on St. Helena, K. angrae-pequenae in Namibia and South Africa, K. arenicola (incl. K. trachysperma) in South Africa, K. bowkeriana (incl. K. suffruticosa) widespread in eastern and southern Africa and in Madagascar, K. caespitosa in Angola and Namibia, and K. salsoloides in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. Kewa is morphologically distinctive, notably by its simple perianth where the two outer perianth-segments are more or less sepaloid and the three inner ones more or less petaloid, and by its indumentum of short glandular hairs, often with prominent, persistent, wart-like bases. All species have an acid taste, apparently due to the presence of oxalic acid. All names are typified, including one lectotype designated here. An identification key and distribution maps for all species are provided. The phylogeny of Kewa is reconstructed based on plastid trnK-matK and rbcL and nuclear ITS sequences. Kewa is strongly supported and the included species have strong to no support, whereas the relationships between the species are mostly unsupported. The phylogeny is dated and the estimated age of the Kewa stem clade is (37.5-)45.0(-57.0) million years and of the crown lade (3.0-)3.9(-7.4) million years. The age of the crown lade would also be the estimated date when K. acida on the approximately 14 million years old St. Helena diverged from its potential sister group on the African continent, and would coincide with the earliest possible date for the introduction of the ancestor of K. acida to St. Helena.
