Liver-Specific Polygenic Risk Score Is Associated with Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

- Background: Our understanding of the pathophysiology underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD) has benefited from genomic analyses, including those that leverage polygenic risk score (PRS) models of disease. The use of functional annotation has been able to improve the power of genomic models. Objective: We sought to leverage genomic functional annotations to build tissue-specific AD PRS models and study their relationship with AD and its biomarkers. Methods: We built 13 tissue-specific AD PRS and studied the scores' relationships with AD diagnosis, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid, CSF tau, and other CSF biomarkers in two longitudinal cohort studies of AD. Results: The AD PRS model that was most predictive of AD diagnosis (even without APOE) was the liver AD PRS: n = 1,115; odds ratio = 2.15 (1.67-2.78), p = 3.62x10(-9). The liver AD PRS was also statistically significantly associated with cerebrospinal fluid biomarker evidence of amyloid-beta (A beta(42):A beta(40) ratio, p = 3.53x10(-6)) and the phosphorylated tau:amyloid beta ratio (p = 1.45x10(-5)). Conclusion: These findings provide further evidence of the role of the liver-functional genome in AD and the benefits of incorporating functional annotation into genomic research.

- The catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins constitutes a powerful method for the preparation of chiral compounds. A series of prochiral unsaturated amides were efficiently reduced with high enantioselectivities by means of an iridium N,P-complex-catalyzed hydrogenation. Its application in the synthesis of fenpropidin and the possibility of using isomeric mixtures of starting materials are attractive features of the method.

- Close-in hot Jupiters are exposed to a tremendous photon flux that ionizes the neutral escaping material from the planet leaving an observable imprint that makes them an interesting laboratory for testing theoretical models. In this work, we present 3D hydrodynamic simulations with radiation transfer calculations of a close-in exoplanet in a blow-off state. We calculate the Ly alpha absorption and compare it with observations of HD 209458b and previous simplified model results. Our results show that the hydrodynamic interaction together with a proper calculation of the photoionization process are able to reproduce the main features of the observed Ly alpha absorption, in particular at the blue-shifted wings of the line. We found that the ionizing stellar flux produce an almost linear effect on the amount of absorption in the wake. Varying the planetary mass-loss rate and the radiation flux, we were able to reproduce the 10 per cent absorption observed at -100 km s(-1).

- This article presents analyses of documents from special schools in Sweden for students in the care of social welfare who have been assessed with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The aim is to use actor-network theory to analyse how blame and critique are handled in individual educational plans, and how responsibilities are produced in interactions between human and non-human actors. The documentation can be read as a materialised network that produces a distributed responsibility; the network is stabilised by accepting and recognising differences between actors. The template headings for each actor enable different translations of the network and make it possible for responsibilities to be distributed between students, parents, social service officers and teachers, thereby reducing the risk of conflicts. While the network provides opportunities for students to become learners, it is silent on the topic of adults’ responsibilities.

Frequency Domain Blind Equalization for MIMO Systems

- This paper presents a new normalized frequency domain approach for adaptive blind equalization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. We first develop a time domain block based algorithm that updates the equalizer coefficients once per block of data symbols. As the time domain algorithm involves infinite summations in the separation cost function, an approximation is then proposed to reduce the cost function to finite summations. As a consequence, the block based time domain algorithm can be implemented in the frequency domain to reduce the computational complexity associated with the conventional symbol-by-symbol time domain update. Furthermore, by recognizing that the signals in the frequency domain are orthogonal, it is possible to significantly improve the convergence rate by normalizing the update equations with respect to the signal power in each frequency bin. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can successfully equalize the received signals while maintaining low computational complexity. Moreover, the presented normalized frequency domain blind equalization algorithm for MIMO systems significantly improves the convergence rate.
