  • System Identification in GSM/EDGE Receivers Using a Multi-Model Approach
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Control System and Instrumentation. - 2158-0006. ; 3:1, s. 41-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Model order selection is an important element in system identification. It is well known that common model order selection methods such as Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian’s information criterion (BIC) neglect relevant information that is available in models of order different from the one chosen. In this paper the model order selection problem for receivers similar to those found in GSM and EDGE systems is reviewed briefly and is solved with a multi-model approach based on simultaneous consideration of several models. Two methods are evaluated; a multi-model noise suppression filter and multi-model soft combining. The algorithms are implemented and evaluated by means of simulations. The performance of each method is analyzed for GSM and EDGE receivers in a link level simulator. Simulation results show a significant improvement in performance at the cost of increased computational complexity for the multi-model approach.

  • Validation of a Non-Line-of-Sight Path-Loss Model for V2V Communications at Street Intersections
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 13th International Conference on ITS Telecommunications.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) path-loss and fading model developed for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication at 5:9 GHz is validated with independent and realistic measurement data. The reference NLOS model is claimed to be flexible and of low complexity, and incorporates specific geometric aspects in a closed-form expression. We validated the accuracy of the model with the help of realistic channel measurements performed in selected street intersections in the city of Lund and Malm¨o, Sweden. The model fits well, with a few exceptions, to most of the measurements taken at different intersections which have variable geometry and scattering environment. It is found that the model can be made more general if an intersection dependent parameter, that depends on the property and number of available scatterers in that particular intersection, is included in the model.

  • Activity Coefficients of Concentrated Salt Solutions: A Monte Carlo Investigation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Solution Chemistry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0095-9782 .- 1572-8927. ; 48:8-9, s. 1222-1243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used to calculate single ion and mean ionic activity coefficients and water activity in concentrated electrolytes and at elevated temperatures. By using a concentration dependent dielectric constant, the applicability range of the MC method was extended to 3mol·L−1 or beyond, depending on the salt. The calculated activity coefficients were fitted to experimental data by adjusting only one parameter, i.e., the cation radius. Fitted ionic radii obtained by such a procedure indicate the extent of cation–anion interaction in a salt solution. For example, the fitted radii of Li+ and Na+ in LiClO3 and NaClO3 indicate that Li+ is strongly hydrated and has a weak interaction with the ClO3− ion whereas Na+ forms ion pairs and loses its hydration. The single ion activity coefficients for protons and chloride ions in HCl were calculated by MC simulations and compared with experimental values obtained by ion selective electrodes. The calculated single ion activity coefficients for protons and chloride ions are much lower and higher, respectively, than the experimental values. However, the mean activity coefficients of HCl obtained by the MC simulations, ion selective electrodes and vapor pressure measurements are in good agreement. In the case of NaCl and KCl the calculated single ion activity coefficients of Na+, K+, and Cl− are much closer to the values obtained by ion selective electrodes. The results in HCl indicate that the hydrated proton is large and includes the chloride ion within the hydration shell, i.e., the apparent size of the chloride ion is negligible.

  • Locating Dam Sites For Water Harvesting : Case Study Of Najaf Province, Iraq
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Hydrology. - Canada : The International Association of Environmental Hydrology. - 1058-3912 .- 1996-7918. ; 27, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Middle East is considered as an arid area. Iraq was an exception due to the presence of the Tigris  and  Euphrates  Rivers. After  1970,  the  flow  of  these  rivers  started  to  decrease  due  to  climate change  and  building  of  dams  in  the  upper  parts  of  the  catchments  of  the  rivers.  Now,  Iraq  is experiencing  water  shortage  problems.  Rain  water  harvesting  will  definitely  minimize  the  effect  of water shortage problems. In this research an arid area was selected (al Najaf) to find out the best sites for water harvesting using GIS techniques. The good agreement between the results from a simple GIS model  and  observations  in  cases  such  as  al  Najaf  Sea  is  indicating  a  promising  future  for  GIS application  in  hydrological  modeling.  The  present  study  proposed  a  function  formula  of  estimating suitable dam site using existing geographic information map such as the digital elevation maps. It is expected that it will save time, cost and work force. Finally, through the contour map of the study area, the lowest three elevation values at the governorate level were observed (20, 40, 60m). Based on these values, three possibilities were suggested to select the dam sites.

  • Evaluation of the use of streaming graph processing algorithms for road congestion detection
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 16th IEEE International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing with Applications, 17th IEEE International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Communications, 8th IEEE International Conference on Big Data and Cloud Computing, 11th IEEE International Conference on Social Computing and Networking and 8th IEEE International Conference on Sustainable Computing and Communications, ISPA/IUCC/BDCloud/SocialCom/SustainCom 2018. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728111414 ; , s. 1017-1025
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time road congestion detection allows improving traffic safety and route planning. In this work, we propose to use streaming graph processing algorithms for road congestion detection and evaluate their accuracy and performance. We represent road infrastructure sensors in the form of a directed weighted graph and adapt the Connected Components algorithm and some existing graph processing algorithms, originally used for community detection in social network graphs, for the task of road congestion detection. In our approach, we detect Connected Components or communities of sensors with similarly weighted edges that reflect different states in the traffic, e.g., free flow or congested state, in regions covered by detected sensor groups. We have adapted and implemented the Connected Components and community detection algorithms for detecting groups in the weighted sensor graphs in batch and streaming manner. We evaluate our approach by building and processing the road infrastructure sensor graph for Stockholm's highways using real-world data from the Motorway Control System operated by the Swedish traffic authority. Our results indicate that the Connected Components and DenGraph community detection algorithms can detect congestion with accuracy up to ? 94% for Connected Components and up to ? 88% for DenGraph. The Louvain Modularity algorithm for community detection fails to detect congestion regions for sparsely connected graphs, representing roads that we have considered in this study. The Hierarchical Clustering algorithm using speed and density readings is able to detect congestion without details, such as shockwaves.

  • From restricted towards realistic models of salt solutions: Corrected Debye–Hückel theory and Monte Carlo simulations
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1422-6952 .- 1422-6928 .- 0378-3812. ; 260:2, s. 233-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of bulk salt solutions over wide concentration ranges are explored by a combination of simple physical theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The corrected Debye–Hückel (CDH) theory which incorporates ion size effects in a linear response approximation is extended to yield free energy and other thermodynamic properties by integration of the chemical potential over concentration. Charging integration which is usually used to obtain an electrostatic contribution of total free energy of electrolytes is avoided in this new direct approach. MC simulations are performed with a modified Widom particle insertion method, which also provides directly the ionic activity coefficients. The validity of the CDH theory is tested by comparison with the MC simulation data for 1:1, 2:1, 2:2 and 3:1 restricted primitive model (RPM) electrolytes over a wide concentration range and at various ion sizes. Mean ionic activity and osmotic coefficients calculated by the CDH theory in RPM approximation of electrolyte are fitted to experimental data by adjusting only a mean ionic diameter. Good fits up to 1 molal (m) concentration are obtained for a large number of salt solutions. MC simulations data for unrestricted primitive model (UPM) of 1:1 and 2:1 electrolytes are also fitted to the experimental data by varying the cation radius while keeping the anion radius fixed at a crystallographic value. The success of this approach is found to be salt specific. For example good fits up to 2 and 3.5 m concentrations were obtained for LiCl and LiBr, respectively. However in the case of less dissociated salts such as NaCl and KI the experimental data could only be fitted up to one molal concentration. Possibility of extending the applicability range of the CDH theory to concentrations >2 m is explored by including a concentration dependent dielectric constant as measured in experiments. Mean ionic activity coefficients for a number of salts could successfully be fitted up to 3 m concentration by adjusting only a mean ionic diameter. Difficulties encountered in simultaneously fitting the mean ionic activity and osmotic coefficients at salt concentrations >2 m are discussed.

  • In Situ Growth of CuWO4 Nanospheres over Graphene Oxide for Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Immunosensing of Clinical Biomarker
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Procalcitonin (PCT) protein has recently been identified as a clinical marker for bacterial infections based on its better sepsis sensitivity. Thus, an increased level of PCT could be linked with disease diagnosis and therapeutics. In this study, we describe the construction of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) PCT immunosensing platform based on it situ grown photo-active CuWO4 nanospheres over reduced graphene oxide layers (CuWO4@rGO). The in situ growth strategy enabled the formation of small nanospheres (diameter of 200 nm), primarily composed of tiny self-assembled CuWO4 nanoparticles (2-5 nm). The synergic coupling of CuWO4 with rGO layers constructed an excellent photo-active heterojunction for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. The platform was then considered for electrocatalytic (EC) mechanism-based detection of PCT, where inhibition of the photocatalytic oxidation signal of ascorbic acid (AA), subsequent to the antibody-antigen interaction, was recorded as the primary signal response. This inhibition detection approach enabled sensitive detection of PCT in a concentration range of 10 pgmL(-1) to 50 ng.mL(-1) with signal sensitivity achievable up to 0.15 pgmL(-1). The proposed PEC hybrid (CuWO4@rGO) could further be engineered to detect other clinically important species.

  • Influence of Patterns on Mechanical Properties of Ultrasonically Welded Joints in Copper Substrate and Wire
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Metals and Materials International. - : Springer Nature. - 1598-9623 .- 2005-4149. ; 30:8, s. 2250-2268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasonic wire welding is considered a method of choice for creating reliable interconnects in electronics industry including aerospace, batteries and electric vehicles. In this paper, ultrasonic welding tests between EVR252 copper wire and substrate are carried out. Novel pattern morphologies are machined on substrates to explore its influence on mechanical properties of welded joint. Patterns are divided into three different categories e.g., original surface, vertical and horizontal shapes. Cracks, microstructure strength and tensile properties of welded joint are studied and its joining mechanism is analysed. Compared with the reference substrate (S1), the welded joint performance of the longitudinal patterns (S2, S3, S4) has been improved, among which the longitudinal pattern (S4) has the most significant improvement (+ 15%). Likewise, the performance of transverse pattern (S5) welded joints is relatively poor (− 16%). The microstructural analysis using SEM has revealed predominant joint strength on Cu wire surface while maintaining rock-like and compact properties of S4 substrate. Upper side of wire-harness compactness is frequently observed due to vertical direction of patterns on substrate and also increases the strength of welded joint. Values of failure load, failure displacement and failure energy absorption were increased by 7.9%, 72% and 35% for S2, 6.1%, 75% and 42% for S3 and 15%, 87% and 113% for S4 compared to S1. Failure modes of welded joints are mainly characterized into: 1-poor ductility or rupture (no deformation) failure in vertical 3-line pattern joints 2-cylindrical deep holes failure in vertical 3-line zigzag pattern joints and 3-bulging effect failure in horizontal 3-line zigzag pattern joints. Point and line scans EDS measurement were performed to investigate weaker and stable trends of different locations in welded joints. In S4 substrate, 17.9% carbon content at the position of welded joint was investigated, leading to content of less oxides and fraction impurities. However, S1 weld zone contains 38.7% carbon content which can weaken welded joint and reduce durability.
