  • Antioxidant response of the hard shelled mussel Mytilus coruscus exposed to reduced pH and oxygen concentration
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety. - : Elsevier BV. - 0147-6513. ; 137, s. 94-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ocean acidification (OA) and hypoxic events are increasing worldwide problems, their interactive effects have not been well clarified, although their co-occurrence is prevalent. The East China Sea (the Yangtze River estuary area) suffers from not only coastal hypoxia but also pH fluctuation, representing an ideal study site to explore the combined effect of OA and hypoxia on marine bivalves. We experimentally evaluated the antioxidant response of the mussel Mytilus coruscus exposed to three pH levels (8.1, 7.7 and 7.3) at two dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (2.0 mg L-1 and 6.0 mg L-1) for 72 h. Activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase and levels of malondialdehyde were measured in gills and hemolymph. All enzymatic activities in hemolymph and gills followed a similar pattern throughout the experiment duration. Generally, low DO showed greater effects on enzyme activities than elevated CO2. Significant interactions between DO, pH and time were only observed at superoxide dismutase and catalase in both tissues. PCA revealed positive relationships between most enzyme activities in both gills and hemolymph with the exception of alkaline phosphatase activity and the level of malondialdehyde in the hemolymph. Overall, our results suggested that decreased pH and low DO induced similar antioxidant responses in the hard shelled mussel, and showed an additive effect on most enzyme activities. The evaluation of multiple environmental stessors, a more realistic scenario than single ones, is crucial to predict the effect of future global changes on coastal species and our results supply some insights on the potential combined effects of reduced pH and DO on marine bivalves.

  • Thermal Hydraulic Experiments and Code Validation for LWR SMRs within the European McSAFER Project: Overview of Activities and Current Status
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 20th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics, NURETH 2023. - : American Nuclear Society. ; , s. 2388-2401
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EU Horizon 2020 project McSAFER was launched in 2020 to advance the safety research of small modular reactors (SMR) via thermal-hydraulic experiments with related code validation and numerical coupled multi-physics and multi-scale simulations. This paper provides an overview of the thermal-hydraulic experiments and code validation within the project and presents the status of these activities highlighting some of the results already obtained. Experiments are performed at three European laboratories with test facilities dedicated for the investigation of SMR-relevant phenomena. Fundamental heat transfer experiments with boiling up to critical heat flux under forced convection for rod configurations and conditions representative of SMRs are performed with the COSMOS-H facility. Performance of the helical coil steam generator, core cross flow phenomena and the general behavior of an SMR operating with natural circulation are investigated with the MOTEL facility. Heat transfer phenomena are investigated in conditions relevant for SMRs also in forced to natural circulation transients with the HWAT facility. Selected thermal hydraulic system, subchannel and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes are validated with the experimental data.

  • Room-Temperature Quantitative Quantum Sensing of Lithium Ions with a Radical-Embedded Metal-Organic Framework
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:41, s. 19008-19016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent advancements in quantum sensing have sparked transformative detection technologies with high sensitivity, precision, and spatial resolution. Owing to their atomic-level tunability, molecular qubits and ensembles thereof are promising candidates for sensing chemical analytes. Here, we show quantum sensing of lithium ions in solution at room temperature with an ensemble of organic radicals integrated in a microporous metal-organic framework (MOF). The organic radicals exhibit electron spin coherence and microwave addressability at room temperature, thus behaving as qubits. The high surface area of the MOF promotes accessibility of the guest analytes to the organic qubits, enabling unambiguous identification of lithium ions and quantitative measurement of their concentration through relaxometric and hyperfine spectroscopic methods based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The sensing principle presented in this work is applicable to other metal ions with nonzero nuclear spin.

  • The Contribution of Genetic Risk and Lifestyle Factors in the Development of Adult-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease : A Prospective Cohort Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0002-9270 .- 1572-0241. ; 118:3, s. 511-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: The joint associations across genetic risk, modifiable lifestyle factors, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear.METHODS: Genetic susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) was estimated by polygenic risk scores and further categorized into high, intermediate, and low genetic risk categories. Weighted healthy lifestyle scores were constructed based on 5 common lifestyle factors and categorized into favorable (4 or 5 healthy lifestyle factors), intermediate (3 healthy lifestyle factors), and unfavorable (0-2 healthy lifestyle factors) groups. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for their associations.RESULTS: During the 12-year follow-up, 707 cases with CD and 1576 cases with UC were diagnosed in the UK Biobank cohort. Genetic risk and unhealthy lifestyle categories were monotonically associated with CD and UC risk with no multiplicative interaction between them. The HR of CD and UC were 2.24 (95% CI 1.75-2.86) and 2.15 (95% CI 1.82-2.53) for those with a high genetic risk, respectively. The HR of CD and UC for individuals with an unfavorable lifestyle were 1.94 (95% CI 1.61-2.33) and 1.98 (95% CI 1.73-2.27), respectively. The HR of individuals with a high genetic risk but a favorable lifestyle (2.33, 95% CI 1.58-3.44 for CD, and 2.05, 95% CI 1.58-2.66 for UC) were reduced nearly by half, compared with those with a high genetic risk but an unfavorable lifestyle (4.40, 95% CI 2.91-6.66 for CD and 4.44, 95% CI 3.34-5.91 for UC).DISCUSSION: Genetic and lifestyle factors were independently associated with susceptibility to incident CD and UC. Adherence to a favorable lifestyle was associated with a nearly 50% lower risk of CD and UC among participants at a high genetic risk.
