  • Electromagnetic weather at 100 km altitude on 3 August 1986
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 21, s. 2095-2098
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electromagnetic weather at high altitudes above the Earth’s surface is determined by the transport of ionospheric plasma, which in turn is governed by the magnitude as well as the direction of the electric and magnetic fields. Different models [Levitin et al., 1984; Friis-Christensen et al., 1985; Mishin, 1990] have been proposed that allow an estimation of the electromagnetic parameters of the upper atmosphere, given a knowledge of the magnitude and orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field. Here we use one such model to estimate the global convection pattern and its temporal evolution during a pass of the Swedish satellite Viking over the northern polar cap. The model predictions are shown to agree well with the electric and magnetic fields measured along the satellite trajectory. The good agreement implies that the model can be used to reconstruct, with reasonable confidence, the large-scale distribution of electric and magnetic fields and their time-variation in the entire auroral ionosphere.

  • Effect of the Electric Field on the Agyrotropic Electron Distributions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 48:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate agyrotropic electron distributions from two magnetopause events observed by magnetospheric multiscale (MMS) spacecraft. Agyrotropic electron distributions can be generated by the finite electron gyration at an electron-scale boundary, and the electric field normal to this boundary usually contributes to the electron acceleration to make the agyrotropic distributions more apparent. The effect of the electric field becomes important only when it is sufficiently strong and local, meaning its electrostatic potential is comparable to or larger than the electron temperature, and its width is smaller than the electron thermal gyroradius, so that this electric field can directly accelerate part of the electrons out of the original core to form agyrotropic electron distributions. Also, we reproduce the measured electron "finger" structures from test particle simulations, which can be effectively suppressed by increasing the sampling rate of the electron measurement. Plain Language Summary Agyrotropic electron distributions reveal valuable information of electron dynamics at electron scales, and the generation of these distributions have been extensively studied. In this study, we provide a new possibility to generate agyrotropic electron distributions with a strong localized electric field, which can accelerate part of electrons out of the original electron core to form agyrotropic distributions. As such large-amplitude small-scale electric field fluctuations are frequently observed in turbulent plasma environments, we suggest that more agyrotropic electron distributions can be observed with high temporal resolution measurements.

  • Observations of Magnetic Reconnection in the Transition Region of Quasi-Parallel Shocks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 46:3, s. 1177-1184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using observations of Earth's bow shock by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we show for the first time that active magnetic reconnection is occurring at current sheets embedded within the quasi-parallel shock's transition layer. We observe an electron jet and heating but no ion response, suggesting we have observed an electron-only mode. The lack of ion response is consistent with simulations showing reconnection onset on sub-ion time scales. We also discuss the impact of electron heating in shocks via reconnection.

  • MMS Multipoint electric field observations of small-scale magnetic holes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 43:12, s. 5953-5959
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-scale magnetic holes (MHs), local depletions in magnetic field strength, have been observed multiple times in the Earth's magnetosphere in the bursty bulk flow (BBF) braking region. This particular subset of MHs has observed scale sizes perpendicular to the background magnetic field (B) less than the ambient ion Larmor radius (rho(i)). Previous observations by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) indicate that this subset of MHs can be supported by a current driven by the E x B drift of electrons. Ions do not participate in the E x B drift due to the small-scale size of the electric field. While in the BBF braking region, during its commissioning phase, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft observed a small-scale MH. The electric field observations taken during this event suggest the presence of electron currents perpendicular to the magnetic field. These observations also suggest that these currents can evolve to smaller spatial scales.

  • Electron currents and heating in the ion diffusion region of asymmetric reconnection
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 43:10, s. 4691-4700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter the structure of the ion diffusion region of magnetic reconnection at Earth's magnetopause is investigated using the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft. The ion diffusion region is characterized by a strong DC electric field, approximately equal to the Hall electric field, intense currents, and electron heating parallel to the background magnetic field. Current structures well below ion spatial scales are resolved, and the electron motion associated with lower hybrid drift waves is shown to contribute significantly to the total current density. The electron heating is shown to be consistent with large-scale parallel electric fields trapping and accelerating electrons, rather than wave-particle interactions. These results show that sub-ion scale processes occur in the ion diffusion region and are important for understanding electron heating and acceleration.

  • Coordinated observations of two types of diffuse auroras near magnetic local noon by Magnetospheric Multiscale mission and ground all-sky camera
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 44:16, s. 8130-8139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structured diffuse auroras are often observed near magnetic local noon (MLN), but their generation mechanisms are poorly understood. We have found that two types of structured diffuse auroras with obviously different dynamical properties often coexist near MLN. One type usually drifts from low to high latitude with higher speed and shows pulsation. The other type is always adjacent to the discrete aurora oval and drifts together with nearby discrete aurora with much lower speed. Using coordinated observations from MMS and ground all-sky imagers, we found that the two types of diffuse auroras are well correlated with number density increase of O+ (from the ionosphere) and of He2+ (from magnetosheath) ions, respectively. These observations indicate that mangetosheath particles penetrated into the magnetosphere also can play an important role for producing the dayside diffuse aurora. In addition, for the first time, electron cyclotron harmonic waves are observed associated with dayside diffuse aurora.

  • Reconstruction of the electron diffusion region observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft : First results
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 44:10, s. 4566-4574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present first results of the reconstruction of the electron diffusion region (EDR) based on a two-dimensional, incompressible, and inertialess version of the electron magnetohydrodynamics equations. The method is applied to 30 ms resolution magnetic field, and electron moments data taken when the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft observed an EDR of near-antiparallel magnetopause reconnection on 16 October 2015. An X-type magnetic field configuration and quadrupolar Hall fields, consistent with the electron inflow and outflow, are successfully recovered. While MMS encountered a region of significant energy dissipation on the magnetospheric side of the sub-ion-scale current sheet, the reconstructions show that the MMS tetrahedron missed the X line by a distance of a few kilometers (~2 electron inertial lengths). The estimated reconnection electric field is 0.42–0.98 mV/m, equivalent to the dimensionless reconnection rate of 0.11–0.25. Signatures of three-dimensional structures and/or time-dependent processes are also identified.

  • MMS observations of ion-scale magnetic island in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 43:15, s. 7850-7858
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter, first observations of ion-scale magnetic island from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma are presented. The magnetic island is characterized by bipolar variation of magnetic fields with magnetic field compression, strong core field, density depletion, and strong currents dominated by the parallel component to the local magnetic field. The estimated size of magnetic island is about 8 d(i), where d(i) is the ion inertial length. Distinct particle behaviors and wave activities inside and at the edges of the magnetic island are observed: parallel electron beam accompanied with electrostatic solitary waves and strong electromagnetic lower hybrid drift waves inside the magnetic island and bidirectional electron beams, whistler waves, weak electromagnetic lower hybrid drift waves, and strong broadband electrostatic noise at the edges of the magnetic island. Our observations demonstrate that highly dynamical, strong wave activities and electron-scale physics occur within ion-scale magnetic islands in the magnetosheath turbulent plasma.

  • Rosetta measurements of lower hybrid frequency range electric field oscillations in the plasma environment of comet 67P
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 44:4, s. 1641-1651
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric field measurements from cometary environments are very rare but can provide important information on how plasma waves help fashion the plasma environment. The long dwelling time of the Rosetta spacecraft close to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko promises to improve this state. We here present the first electric field measurements from 67P, performed by the Rosetta dual Langmuir probe instrument LAP. Measurements of the electric field from cometocentric distances of 149 and 348 km are presented together with estimates of plasma density changes. Persistent wave activity around the local H2O+ lower hybrid frequency is observed, with the largest amplitudes observed at sharp plasma gradients. We demonstrate that the necessary requirements for the lower hybrid drift instability to be operating are fulfilled. We suggest that lower hybrid waves are responsible for the creation of a warm electron population, the origins of which have been unknown so far, by heating ambient electrons in the magnetic field-parallel direction.

  • Electron jet of asymmetric reconnection
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 43:11, s. 5571-5580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of an electron-scale current sheet and electron outflow jet for asymmetric reconnection with guide field at the subsolar magnetopause. The electron jet observed within the reconnection region has an electron Mach number of 0.35 and is associated with electron agyrotropy. The jet is unstable to an electrostatic instability which generates intense waves with E-vertical bar amplitudes reaching up to 300mVm(-1) and potentials up to 20% of the electron thermal energy. We see evidence of interaction between the waves and the electron beam, leading to quick thermalization of the beam and stabilization of the instability. The wave phase speed is comparable to the ion thermal speed, suggesting that the instability is of Buneman type, and therefore introduces electron-ion drag and leads to braking of the electron flow. Our observations demonstrate that electrostatic turbulence plays an important role in the electron-scale physics of asymmetric reconnection.
