• Management regimes in science-based innovation: control and uncertainty during early phases of new drug development
• 2011
• Ingår i: Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0953-7325 .- 1465-3990. ; 23:5, s. 567-581
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The international pharmaceutical industry is facing a challenge in terms of being able to deliver new and innovative drugs at lower cost. During the last 10 years, a range of new scientific procedures and technologies has been introduced into the industry, partially derived from the advancement of genomics research. However, to date, few have resulted in new registered drugs. In addition to the new technologies, various managerial techniques and methods have been introduced with the intention of increasing the transparency of operations. This paper reports on a study of how scientists during the early phases of new drug development conceive of this present management regime emphasising quantitative output. Thinking of new drug development as an intellectual pursuit in order to understand the elementary mechanisms of the biological organisms on the molecular level, scientists call for an understanding and adjustment of the managerial techniques structuring this work, accompanied by ambiguities and uncertainty.

• Pastoral power in leadership work: the relational leadership idiom in the construction industry
• 2022
• Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management. - : Emerald. - 1746-5648. ; 18:1, s. 84-101
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Purpose Drawing on the literature on pastoral power, a term introduced by Foucault that denotes a specific form of authority based on the subordinate's open communication regarding aspirations, interests and personal concerns, having the full faith in the leader's care of the subordinate's welfare, this article report empirical material from a study of Swedish construction industry. Design/methodology/approach Leadership practices are contingent on context and situation, and over time, authoritative leadership practices have been complemented by relational leadership that increasingly emphasizes the bilateral communication between manager and subordinate. The more communicative and "soft" leadership idiom may have both benefits and incur unanticipated consequences and conditions that need to be studied on basis of empirical materials. Findings Managers in the construction industry emphasize how subordinates increasingly turn to their closest managers to address a variety of concerns. Even though managers recognizes the value of providing personalized support, there is a risk that such a leadership idiom distract both managers and subordinates, i.e. counseling activities consume too much resources, making agents less prone to fully attend to proper project goals. Originality/value To consider contemporary leadership practices as partially premised on pastoral power provides new analytical possibilities that shed light on how leadership practice needs to correspond with new demands in the corporate setting.

• Intercalation of graphene on SiC(0001) via ion implantation
• 2016
• Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 1098-0121. ; 94:8
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Electronic devices based on graphene technology are catching on rapidly and the ability to engineer graphene properties at the nanoscale is becoming, more than ever, indispensable. Here, we present a procedure of graphene functionalization on SiC(0001) that paves the way towards the fabrication of complex graphene electronic chips. The procedure resides on the well-known ion-implantation technique. The efficiency of the working principle is demonstrated by the intercalation of the epitaxial graphene layer on SiC(0001) with Bi atoms, which was not possible following standard procedures. The investigation of the obtained graphene system reveals no clear spin-orbit coupling enhancement expected by theory in addition to the presence of residual structural defects. Our graphene/SiC(0001) intercalation procedure puts forward the ion-beam lithography to nanostructure and functionalize desired graphene chips.

• Characterization of crystalline TiC films grown by pulsed Nd : YAG laser deposition
• 2000
• Ingår i: Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. - 0021-4922 .- 1347-4065. ; 39:7B, s. 4575-4576
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Titanium cal bide (TiC) thin films have been grown on Si (100) substrates using a pulsed neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser deposition method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the TiC film shows that substrate temperature is one of the most important parameters in the fabrication of crystalline TiC film. Crystalline TiC films can be prepared at substrate temperatures above 500 degrees C. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) indicates that the surface of the film is very smooth and pinhole-free.

• Prolonged duration of nonequilibrated Dirac fermions in neutral topological insulators
• 2017
• Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2045-2322. ; 7
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Topological insulators (TIs) possess spin-polarized Dirac fermions on their surface but their unique properties are often masked by residual carriers in the bulk. Recently, (Sb1-xBix)(2)Te-3 was introduced as a non-metallic TI whose carrier type can be tuned from n to p across the charge neutrality point. By using time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast carrier dynamics in the series of (Sb1-xBix)(2)Te-3. The Dirac electronic recovery of similar to 10 ps at most in the bulk-metallic regime elongated to >400 ps when the charge neutrality point was approached. The prolonged nonequilibration is attributed to the closeness of the Fermi level to the Dirac point and to the high insulation of the bulk. We also discuss the feasibility of observing excitonic instability of (Sb1-xBix)(2)Te-3.

• Multi-Robot Range-Only SLAM by Active Sensor Nodes for Urban Search and Rescue
• 2009
• Ingår i: Robocup 2008: Robot Soccer World Cup XII. ; , s. 318-330
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• To jointly map an unknown environment with a team of autonomous robots is a challenging problem, particularly in large environments, as for example the devastated area after a disaster. Under such conditions standard methods for Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) are difficult to apply due to possible misinterpretations of sensor data, leading to erroneous data association for loop closure. We consider the problem of multi-robot range-only SLAM for robot teams by solving the data association problem with wireless sensor nodes that we designed for this purpose. The memory of these nodes is utilized for the exchange of map data between multiple robots, facilitating loop-closures on jointly generated maps. We introduce RSLAM, which is a variant of FastSlam, extended for range-only measurements and the multi-robot case. Maps are generated from robot odometry and range estimates, which are computed from the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication). The proposed method has been extensively tested in USARSim, which serves as basis for the Virtual Robots competition at RoboCup, and by real-world experiments with a team of mobile robots. The presented results indicates that the approach is capable of building consistent maps in presence of real sensor noise, as well as to improve mapping results of multiple robots by data sharing.

• Influence of the metallurgy on fatigue crack propagation in welded high strength steel joints
• 2013
• Ingår i: 14th NOLAMP Conference. - Luleå : Luleå tekniska universitet. - 9789174396881 - 9789174396898 ; , s. 25-35
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• A literature study of high strength steels, fatigue and fatigue assessment of welds has beenconducted and is briefly presented in this paper together with experiments on fatigue crackgrowth rates of laser welded high strength steel. It is well-known that the fatigue life ofwelded joints is heavily dependent upon the surface geometry and welding defects because ofcrack initiation from the high stress concentrations associated with these types of weldingflaws. However, the crack propagation through different weld zones of laser-welded highstrength steels and the corresponding impact from the metallurgy is not fully understood. The experiments comprise three-point bending fatigue tests on laser-welded highstrength steel with machined surfaces. Measurement of the fatigue crack propagation ratetransverse the weld and hence through the different metallurgy and hardness of the heataffected zone and of the weld can contain information on the impact of the metallurgy on thecrack propagation speed. The influence of different high strength steel grades and of differentwelding parameters on the crack propagation and fatigue life is discussed

• 2021
• Ingår i: Annual Review of Biochemistry. - : ANNUAL REVIEWS. - 0066-4154 .- 1545-4509. - 9780824308902 ; 90, s. 507-534
• Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
• Mechanosensation is the ability to detect dynamic mechanical stimuli (e.g., pressure, stretch, and shear stress) and is essential for a wide variety of processes, including our sense of touch on the skin. How touch is detected and transduced at the molecular level has proved to be one of the great mysteries of sensory biology. A major breakthrough occurred in 2010 with the discovery of a family of mechanically gated ion channels that were coined PIEZOs. The last 10 years of investigation have provided a wealth of information about the functional roles and mechanisms of these molecules. Here we focus on PIEZO2, one of the two PIEZO proteins found in humans and other mammals. We review how work at the molecular, cellular, and systems levels over the past decade has transformed our understanding of touch and led to unexpected insights into other types of mechanosensation beyond the skin.
