  • A STATISTICAL APPROACH TO RECOGNIZING SOURCE CLASSES FOR UNASSOCIATED SOURCES IN THE FIRST FERMI-LAT CATALOG

    • The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) First Source Catalog (1FGL) provided spatial, spectral, and temporal properties for a large number of gamma-ray sources using a uniform analysis method. After correlating with the most-complete catalogs of source types known to emit gamma rays, 630 of these sources are unassociated (i.e., have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths). Here, we employ two statistical analyses of the primary gamma-ray characteristics for these unassociated sources in an effort to correlate their gamma-ray properties with the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and pulsar populations in 1FGL. Based on the correlation results, we classify 221 AGN-like and 134 pulsar-like sources in the 1FGL unassociated sources. The results of these source classifications appear to match the expected source distributions, especially at high Galactic latitudes. While useful for planning future multiwavelength follow-up observations, these analyses use limited inputs, and their predictions should not be considered equivalent to probable source classes for these sources. We discuss multiwavelength results and catalog cross-correlations to date, and provide new source associations for 229 Fermi-LAT sources that had no association listed in the 1FGL catalog. By validating the source classifications against these new associations, we find that the new association matches the predicted source class in similar to 80% of the sources.

    • Cold-water coral (CWC) reefs are recognised as an important marine benthic eco system at continental margins. Where abundant, they most likely play a role both in the maintenance of biodiversity and in the provision of ecosystem services provided by shelf seas. Here, we directly measure the community respiration of a CWC reef on the Norwegian shelf and show that rates of oxygen uptake are high in summer (25-88 mmol O-2 m(-2) d(-1)), with lower spring values (7.5-9 mmol O-2 m(-2) d(-1)). Spring uptake rates are comparable to values at shelf sediments at similar water depths, while summer values are much higher. We calculate that with such high respiration rates, CWC reef ecosystems potentially turnover a significant proportion (similar to 25%) of the annual shelf carbon export in the Norwegian Sea, where CWC reefs are abundant. The loss of CWCs through physical destruction or ocean acidification may have a significant impact on local carbon cycling in the mid-to high-latitude North Atlantic Ocean.

    • OBJECTIVE: A previous sham-controlled multinational study demonstrated the short-term efficacy and safety for xerostomia treatment of an intraoral device that delivers electrostimulation to the lingual nerve. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that those beneficial effects would be sustained over an 11-month period. STUDY DESIGN: The device was tested on a mixed sample of 94 patients with xerostomia in an open-label, uncontrolled, prospective multicenter trial. Statutory outcome assessments were done at 5th, 8th, and 11th months and analyzed by multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Improvements achieved at month 5 from baseline were sustained throughout the follow-up period for the primary outcome, xerostomia severity, and the secondary outcomes resting whole salivary flow rate, xerostomia frequency, oral discomfort, and difficulties in speech, swallowing, and sleeping. No significant side effects were detected. CONCLUSIONS: The beneficial effects of a removable intraoral electrostimulating device were sustained for an 11-month period.

  • Magnetization and magnetization reversal in epitaxial Fe/Cr/Co asymmetric spin-valve systems

    • We have investigated asymmetric Fe/Cr/Co/Cr superlattices with two magnetic layers of Fe and Co, which are different with respect to their magnetic properties: magnetization, coercivity, and magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic layers are weakly coupled via a mediating Cr spacer layer providing an antiferromagnetic alignment of adjacent layers. The magnetic structure of these spin-valve-like Fe/Cr/Co/Cr superlattices was analyzed from the remanent state up to saturation via polarized neutron scattering and polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR). Furthermore, the domain structure in remanence was imaged via polarized x-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM). This analysis reveals that the Co magnetization strongly affects the Fe domain structure, while the layer magnetization is collinear from the remanent antiparallel state up to the ferromagnetic saturation state. However, for certain Co layer thicknesses, the as-grown remanent state exhibits a noncollinear antiferromagnetic spin structure, which cannot be recovered after applying a magnetic field. However, the noncollinear structure is reproducible with freshly grown superlattices.

    • Context. New instrumental capabilities and the wealth of astrophysical information extractable from the near-infrared wavelength region have led to a growing interest in the field of high resolution spectroscopy at 1-5 mu m. Aims. We aim to provide a library of observed high-resolution and high signal-to-noise-ratio near-infrared spectra of stars of various types throughout the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. This is needed for the exploration of spectral features in this wavelength range and for comparison of reference targets with observations and models. Methods. High quality spectra were obtained using the CRIRES near-infrared spectrograph at ESO's VLT covering the range from 0.97 mu m to 5.3 mu m at high spectral resolution. Accurate wavelength calibration and correction for telluric lines were performed by fitting synthetic transmission spectra for the Earth's atmosphere to each spectrum individually. Results. We describe the observational strategy and the current status and content of the library which includes 13 objects. The first examples of finally reduced spectra are presented. This publication will serve as a reference paper to introduce the library to the community and explore the extensive amount of material.

  • A Review of Near-Collision Driver Behavior Models

    • Objective: This article provides a review of recent models of driver behavior in on-road collision situations.Background: In efforts to improve traffic safety, computer simulation of accident situations holds promise as a valuable tool, for both academia and industry. However, to ensure the validity of simulations, models are needed that accurately capture near-crash driver behavior, as observed in real traffic or driving experiments.Method: Scientific articles were identified by a systematic approach, including extensive database searches. Criteria for inclusion were defined and applied, including the requirement that models should have been previously applied to simulate on-road collision avoidance behavior. Several selected models were implemented and tested in selected scenarios.Results: The reviewed articles were grouped according to a rough taxonomy based on main emphasis, namely avoidance by braking, avoidance by steering, avoidance by a combination of braking and steering, effects of driver states and characteristics on avoidance, and simulation platforms.Conclusion: A large number of near-collision driver behavior models have been proposed. Validation using human driving data has often been limited, but exceptions exist. The research field appears fragmented, but simulation-based comparison indicates that there may be more similarity between models than what is apparent from the model equations. Further comparison of models is recommended.Application: This review provides traffic safety researchers with an overview of the field of driver models for collision situations. Specifically, researchers aiming to develop simulations of on-road collision accident situations can use this review to find suitable starting points for their work.

  • Bimodality of lavas in the teide-pico viejo succession in tenerife-the role of crustal melting in the origin of recent phonolites

    • In Tenerife, lavas of the recent Teide-Pico Viejo central complex show a marked bimodality in composition from initially mafic lavas (200-30 ka) to highly differentiated phonolites (30-0 ka). After this abrupt change, the bimodality of the lavas continued to manifest itself between the now felsic Teide-Pico Viejo central complex and the adjacent, but exclusively mafic, rift zones. Whole-rock trace element fingerprinting distinguishes three compositional groups (mafic, transitional, felsic). Groundmass Sr-Nd-Pb-O and feldspar δ. 18O data demonstrate open-system behaviour for the petrogenesis of the Teide-Pico Viejo felsic lavas by high. 87Sr/. 86Sr ratios of up to 0·7049, uniform. 206Pb/. 204Pb (19·75-19·78), variable. 207Pb/. 204Pb (15·53-15·62) and heterogeneous δ. 18O values (5·43-6·80‰). However, ocean sediment contamination can be excluded because of the low. 206Pb/. 204Pb ratios of North Atlantic sediments. Isotope mixing hyperbolae reproduce the entire Teide-Pico Viejo succession and require an assimilant of predominantly felsic composition. Unsystematic and heterogeneous variation of δ. 18O in fresh and unaltered feldspars across the Teide-Pico Viejo succession indicates magmatic addition of diverse δ. 18O assimilants, altered near surface at high and low temperatures. The best fit for these requirements is provided by nepheline syenite that occurs as fresh or altered lithic blocks in voluminous pre-Teide ignimbrite deposits and is similarly heterogeneous in oxygen isotope composition. Nepheline syenite blocks are considered to represent deep remnants of associated earlier eruptions and were thus available for assimilation at depth. Rare earth element modelling indicates that nepheline syenite needs to be melted in bulk to form a suitable end-member composition. Using this assimilant, energy-constrained assimilation fractional crystallization (EC-AFC) modelling reproduces the bulk of the succession, which leads us to suggest that Teide-Pico Viejo petrogenesis is governed by assimilation and fractional crystallization. Both mixing hyperbolae and EC-AFC models indicate that assimilation is more pronounced for the more felsic lavas. The maximum assimilation is evident in the most strongly differentiated (and the most radiogenic in Sr) lava and computes to >97·8% of the assimilant. This most evolved eruption probably represents nepheline syenite bulk melts that formed spatially decoupled from juvenile material. This study therefore recognizes a wider variability of magmatic differentiation processes at Teide-Pico Viejo than previously thought.
