  • Model-Based Stem Volume Retrieval and Windthrow Detection using CARABAS and P-band SAR

    • Radar remote sensing is an efficient method for monitoring forests over large areas. Radar waves transmitted from a system carried by a satellite or an aircraft interact with trees on the ground, and the reflected waves are used to form images which are independent of weather and light conditions. Information in the images is then used to retrieve forest parameters.CARABAS is an airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. Due to the long wavelengths of the system (3-15 m), the radar signal is able to penetrate the forest canopies and for boreal forests the main backscattering component is the ground-trunk double-bounce. The scattering strength is directly related to the stem volume and hence stem volume retrieval with CARABAS has higher accuracy than SAR systems using shorter wavelengths. However, the ground-trunk double-bounce is very sensitive to ground slope and if not corrected for, ground slope will cause the stem volume to be underestimated.By using multiple images acquired with different flight headings and combining the image information with ground topography data in a model-based inversion method, most of the ground topography influence on the retrieved stem volume is removed. With four CARABAS images and a coarse digital elevation model with 50 m horizontal grid, the stem volume can be retrieved with a root mean square error(RMSE) of 48 m3/ha for stem volumes in the range 80-700 m3/ha. The proposed retrieval method gives better accuracy and is more robust than existing heuristic methods. By using this method, the retrieval accuracy in areas with ground topography is similar to that of similar forests standing on flat and horizontal ground.Another forestry application where CARABAS and other airborne SAR systems with long-wavelengths and high resolution can provide timely and useful information is in the detection of windthrown trees. A method for detecting windthrows in CARABAS images and a discussion about when windthrows can be detected is presented in this thesis.

  • Soil carbon and nutrient accumulation under forest plantations in southern Rwanda

    • Tree and soil interactions may result in changes in soil carbon and nutrient contents. Forest plantations made up of monodominant stands of 17 different species, some native and some exotic to Rwanda, as well as a stand with mixed native tree species were investigated. Biosequential sampling was used followed by basic soil chemical analyses. Results revealed that the plantation species composition influenced the soil chemical properties. Total soil C and N, C: N ratio, available P, pH, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) differed significantly between plantation stands of different species (P < 0.001, N = 54). Increases in the levels of soil C, total N, CEC and base saturation (BS) were observed mainly in mixed native species (MNS), Polyscia fulva, Casuarina equisetifolia and Eucalyptus saligna. The pH declined slightly in soil beneath some Eucalyptus species treatments and increased in others. The high nutrient uptake by fast-growing trees and the acidic parent material were involved in the acidification process. The findings suggest that the species used in afforestation maintain soil fertility and protect the environment. It is recommended that afforestation of abandoned and less productive lands in Rwanda should utilize fast growing Eucalyptus species in combination with agroforestry and native species in order to maintain or improve soil chemical properties.

    • We present work-in-progress of applying simulator technology for developing, demonstrating and evaluating new machine concepts and work methods in off-road environments. In particular we consider a new concept machine for making efficient biomass harvesting in the process of thinning in dense forest stands and we describe how this machine concept is realized in a virtual environment and plan for simulator experiments.

  • The influence of N load and harvest intensity on the risk of P limitation in Swedish forest soils

    • Nitrogen (N) is often considered to be the major factor limiting tree growth in northern forest ecosystems. An increased N availability, however, increases the demand for other nutrients such as base cations and phosphorous (P) which in turn may change which nutrient is the limiting factor. If P or base cations become limiting, N will start to leach which means a risk of increased eutrophication of surface waters. As many studies focus on base cations, this study instead aims at estimating P budgets on a regional scale for different harvesting scenarios relevant for Swedish conditions. P budget calculations were carried out for 14,550 coniferous sites from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, as weathering+deposition–harvesting–leaching. Three scenarios with different harvest intensities were used: 1) no harvesting, 2) stem harvesting and 3) wholetree harvesting. The input data were derived from measurements and model results. The P budget estimates indicate that harvesting, especially whole-tree harvesting, result in net losses of P in large parts of Sweden. The highest losses were found in southern Sweden due to high growth rate in this area. In the whole-tree harvesting scenario the losses exceeded 1 kg ha−1 y−1 on many sites. N budget calculations on the same sites indicate that N generally accumulates in the whole country and especially in the southern parts. Consequently, the N and P budget calculations indicate that the forests in southern Sweden are in a transition phase from N-to P-limitation to growth. This transition will proceed as long as the accumulation of N continues. These results are important in a sustainable forestry context, as a basis for assessing the risk of future N leaching, and in designing recommendations for abatement strategies of N deposition and for application of wood ash recycling and N fertilization.

    • The objective of this study is to make a first evaluation of the possibilities to detect forest clear-cuts using high-resolution ALOS PALSAR FBD (Fine Beam Dual polarization) satellite images. New operational applications for mapping of changes in forest cover are of interest for government authorities in Sweden and in other countries with similar needs. The study was conducted in southern Sweden and included seven old coniferous stands located on flat terrain. Three of the stands were clear-felled and the remaining stands were left untreated for reference. Altogether, six PALSAR FBD images (look angle 34.3°, HH- and HV-polarization) acquired during the summer and fall seasons were analyzed. The difference in backscattering coefficient between the reference and the clear-felled stands was on average 2.4 dB and 2.9 dB for the HH- and HV-polarization, respectively. When comparing the backscattering coefficient before and after clear-felling the drop was found to be 1.7 dB and 2.3 dB for the HH- and HV-polarization, respectively.

  • Functional characterization of Arabidopsis calreticulin1a : a key alleviator of endoplasmic reticulum stress

    • The chaperone calreticulin plays important roles in a variety of processes in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of animal cells, such as Ca2+ signaling and protein folding. Although the functions of calreticulin are well characterized in animals, only indirect evidence is available for plants. To increase our understanding of plant calreticulins we introduced one of the Arabidopsis isoforms, AtCRT1a, into calreticulin-deficient (crt–/–) mouse embryonic fibroblasts. As a result of calreticulin deficiency, the mouse crt–/– fibroblasts have decreased levels of Ca2+ in the ER and impaired protein folding abilities. Expression of the AtCRT1a in mouse crt–/– fibroblasts rescued these phenotypes, i.e. AtCRT1a restored the Ca2+-holding capacity and chaperone functions in the ER of the mouse crt–/– fibroblasts, demonstrating that the animal sorting machinery was also functional for a plant protein, and that basic calreticulin functions are conserved across the Kingdoms. Expression analyses using a β-glucuronidase (GUS)–AtCRT1a promoter construct revealed high expression of CRT1a in root tips, floral tissues and in association with vascular bundles. To assess the impact of AtCRT1a in planta, we generated Atcrt1a mutant plants. The Atcrt1a mutants exhibited increased sensitivity to the drug tunicamycin, an inducer of the unfolded protein response. We therefore conclude that AtCRT1a is an alleviator of the tunicamycin-induced unfolded protein response, and propose that the use of the mouse crt–/– fibroblasts as a calreticulin expression system may prove useful to assess functionalities of calreticulins from different species.
