- This open access book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. With for the first time in history there being more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there are children below the age of 5, the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period). The final chapter by the editors summarizes the differences and similarities in these contributions. As such this book provides an interesting read for students, teachers and researchers at different levels and from different fields interested in capability and multidisciplinary research.

- This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

- In 2020, for the first time in history, there were more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there were children below the age of 5 years. The population aged over 65 years is projected to increase from one billion in 2019 to more than two billion in 2050, and those aged over 80 years are projected to increase from 143 to 426 million, with the largest increase occurring in the developing world (UN World Population Prospects, 2019). This demographic trend constitutes the largest global health challenge, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The European Union has set it as one of the major challenges in Horizon 2020 and it has important societal implications (European Commission, 2020). The proportion of retired individuals will increase, leading to an increased ratio between those who have exited the workforce and those still active in the labour market. Thus, ageing represents a global societal and scientific challenge requiring integrated efforts, multidisciplinary translational research approaches and social innovations that build on ideas of potentials and capabilities, emphasising the value of old age.

Passive and active suicidal ideation in Swedish 85-year-olds: Time trends 1986-2015

- Abstract Background Older adults have high suicide rates. We investigated potential time trends in the prevalence of passive and active suicidal ideation in 85-year-olds. Further, we examined factors associated with such ideation in this age group. Methods Population-based samples of 85-year-olds were interviewed in 1986 (N=347), 2008 (N=426) and 2015 (N=320). Past-month passive/active suicidal ideation was evaluated with the Paykel questions. Results Reporting any type of passive or active suicidal ideation was less common in 2008 (7.3%, p<0.001) and 2015 (7.2%, p<0.001) compared to 1986 (16.4%). The change was driven by decreases in passive ideation. Passive/active suicidal ideation was associated with higher MADRS score (OR: 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1-1.2, p<0.001), institution residence (OR: 3.9, 95% CI: 1.7-8.9, p=0.001) and feelings of loneliness (OR: 2.7, 95% CI: 1.4-5.2, p=0.003). When stratified by sex, it was associated with institution residence (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.4-9.9, p=0.008) and feelings of loneliness (OR: 3.0, 95% CI: 1.4-6.3, p=0.005) in women. In men, we observed a tenfold higher risk in those without partners (OR: 9.8, 95% CI: 2.9-33.5, p<0.001). Limitations While differential three-year mortality was not observed in 1986, mortality was higher among non-participants in 2008 and 2015. This might have inflated cohort differences in passive/active suicidal ideation. Conclusion An initial decrease in the prevalence of passive/active suicidal ideation in 85-year-olds was observed but this positive trend did not persist. Results underline that preventive strategies targeting loneliness and focusing on institutional settings are needed, as are interventions for men without partners.

Som helhet visar bidragen, frågorna och författarnas svar på många av de olikheter som finns mellan vetenskaper och många av de utmaningar som finns i vetenskaplig samverkan. Förhoppningsvis kan boken bli ett bidrag till att hitta lösningar när tvärvetenskapliga fnurror på tråden uppstår.

- This chapter aims to further fruitful conversations about the meaning and implications of coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization in the Nordic region. Such a collective endeavour cannot bypass the perspectives and historical experience of people in the Nordic region who are produced as non-belonging, absent, criminal and/or barbaric in general, including ‘non-Western’ migrants and refugees, Afro-Nordics and Muslim communities, as well as the Romani and the indigenous communities of the region such as the Sami and Inuit. However, much of the decolonial scholarship in the Nordic region approaches coloniality through a poststructuralist and postcolonial lens and reproduces the coloniality of knowledge by ignoring and depoliticizing the radical political concepts and projects emanating the abovementioned peoples in the Nordic region and the colonized regions of the world, resulting in undertheoretization. On this basis, the chapter argues for the need of reclaiming the political, which involves theorizing the materiality of colonial politics in contemporary Nordic societies, including its imperial investments and political economy.

- This chapter discusses the value of a capability approach in historical research on older people. Historians are generally focused on studying continuity and change over time. Their research often aims at explaining how and why certain phenomena appear and take different shapes. Capability is a way of capturing an individual’s ability to live a meaningful life, or a life that they perceive as good. A modern analytical tool such as the capability approach can be used for visualising historical patterns, even though individuals’ values of well-being change over time. In that sense, historical studies of individuals’ capabilities, or functions, can add another perspective to this theoretical framework. Old newspapers, biographies, diaries, letters, novels and government reports make it possible to understand which capabilities individuals and societies have valued for older citizens at different times. The meaning of functions differs over time and is dependent on several factors, such as gender and economic conditions, as well as social and civil status. This also means that conditions for a phenomenon such as retirement change over time, but they also differ depending on people’s previous life conditions. In this article, we explore these things using two different examples. Firstly, we discuss how Selma Lagerlöf, a woman with high social status, arranged for her retirement. The second example shows how women with low economic status struggled to retire at the time when universal pension reform was being implemented in Sweden.
