  • Evaluating research : A multidisciplinary approach to assessing research practice and quality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333 .- 1873-7625. ; 45:3, s. 593-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are few widely acknowledged quality standards for research practice, and few definitions of what constitutes good research. The overall aim was therefore to describe what constitutes research, and then to use this description to develop a model of research practice and to define concepts related to its quality. The primary objective was to explore such a model and to create a multidisciplinary understanding of the generic dimensions of the quality of research practice. Eight concept modelling working seminars were conducted. A graphic representation of concepts and their relationships was developed to bridge the gap between different disciplines. A concept model of research as a phenomenon was created, which included a total of 18 defined concepts and their relationships. In a second phase four main areas were distilled, describing research practice in a multidisciplinary context: Credible, Contributory, Communicable, and Conforming. Each of these was further specified in a concept hierarchy together with a defined terminology. A comprehensive quality model including 32 concepts, based on the four main areas, was developed for describing quality issues of research practice, where the model of research as a phenomenon was used to define the quality concepts. The quality model may be used for further development of elements, weights and operationalizations related to the quality of research practice in different academic fields. (C) 2015 The Authors. • Quality of Research Practice: Face validity questionnaire responses
  • 2018
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There are few acknowledged quality standards for research practice and evaluation, even though universities are increasingly judged on research impact. This dataset contains questionnaire responses from 42 senior researchers working (within 18 different departments) at three major universities in Sweden about the importance of 32 defined criteria based on four main areas (credible, contributory, communicable, and conforming) describing indicators of research practice quality. I studien har 42 forskare (från 18 avdelningar) vid tre större universitet i Sverige svarat på en rad enkätfrågor om forskningskvalitet och forskningsutvärdering.

  • A Longitudinal Investigation Of Business Angel Relationship Risk Mitigation Strategies Within Investments - A Three-dimensional Approach
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business angel (BA) investing is associated with various types of risks, where relationship risk often is highlighted as being especially critical (Fiet, 1995). Three investor strategies for mitigating relationship risks associated with BA investing in young private firms can be traced in the literature: (i) indirect control through monitoring and rewarding/punishing entrepreneur behavior and output, (ii) direct control through active involvement, and (iii) relying on mutual trust (Van Osnabrugge and Robinson, 2000; Maxwell and Lévesque, 2011). While early research in the field adopted a rather static view on BA categorization (Coveney and Moore, 1998; Sørheim and Landström, 2001), more contemporary research shows that BAs change investment roles across investments (Avdeitchikova, 2008; Lahti, 2011). However, whether BAs behave differently regarding risk mitigation within investments is less explored. This explorative study contributes to the opening of the black box of how BAs may shift risk mitigation strategies over time within single investments.

  • Straight from the heart – a clinical group intervention to research management spirituality
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Management Research Review. - : Emerald. - 2040-8269. ; 40:8, s. 870-889
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the advancement of research methods in management spirituality by proposing a novel and innovative approach for generating empirical material on issues relevant for practitioners. Design/methodology/approach: The approach introduced is designed as a one-year group process based on Schein’s concept of clinical inquiry, primarily aimed at helping the participating managers to address challenging issues that they face in real life. When this helping process is successful, empirical material on these issues is revealed, as the participants share information to receive help themselves. Findings: Findings illustrate how the approach generates extensive, rich and broad data, guided by what becomes important for the participating managers as the process unfolds. A strong holding environment allows for urgent matters to be shared straight from the heart. Research limitations/implications: As this activity is based on the belief that the managers know best the issues relevant to them, a deviation from the assumed research direction should be seen as help to focus on relevant issues, rather than an obstacle of following an original plan. Practical implications: The proposed approach may be of particular interest to researchers who not only want to contribute to academic knowledge but also wish to work with people and facilitate transformation. Originality/value: This paper advances understandings of generating empirical material in the field of management spirituality through an innovative, client-centered research approach, rooted in well-established theories. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • Straight From the Heart: Using Clinical Inquiry to Research Management Spirituality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - New York, U.S.A. : Academy of Management. - 2151-6561 .- 0065-0668.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the field of management, spirituality and religion has developed greatly during the last decades with an increasingly number of publications in special outlets as well as in highly ranked journals, the bulk of the research on workplace spirituality still relies heavily on the use of quantitative methods. The field is struggling to find methods, which allow an in-depth, first- person understanding of how spirituality relates to work. With this paper, I hope to contribute to the advancement of alternative research methods by proposing a novel and innovative approach to data generation. The suggested approach takes departure in action research and, especially, the notion of clinical inquiry, defined by Edgar Schein as “gathering useful data in settings that are defined by 'clients' who are seeking help”. If the helping process is perceived as successful, the clients will be motivated to reveal more relevant, in-depth data, also when it comes to sensitive issues, which are usually not within research of traditional research methods. In order to illustrate the approach, I draw on a longitudinal study in which the approach was used to help business leaders to integrate insights from spiritual development into their working life. This paper focuses on (1) how a clinical group setting was created, (2) the design of the intervention, (3) a particular technique called “project discussions” was employed to help clients, and (4) how the use of these techniques provided an opportunity for data generation. It is concluded clinical group setting fulfills the function of a holding environment, a safe space in the borderland between spirituality and business, which allowed them to find support in their developments. As a consequence, in-depth data about how these developments came about could be generated. I also argue that the proposed approach may be a viable way for researchers’ with the dual vocation of both facilitating change and creating academic knowledge about that change. This means, in my case, to carry out research with a method that comes straight from the heart.

  • What parameters do students value in business school rankings?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management. - : Taylor & Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 1469-9508 .- 1360-080X. ; 37:6, s. 646-658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The starting point of this paper is the question: Which issues do students think are important when choosing a higher education institution, and how are they related to the factors taken into consideration in ranking institutions? The aim is to identify and rank the parameters students perceive as important when choosing their place of education. The paper is based on a qualitative pre-study and a quantitative main study in which the authors examine what students perceive as important in business school rankings. Our findings show that, by taking the students’ perspective into account, one can see that some of the parameters used in rankings are of less importance to the students: for example, rankings that over-emphasise research. Second, we identify the parameters that could be included in business school rankings to make them more relevant to students: for example, paying more attention to learning outputs in rankings. Our findings highlight the importance of taking individual stakeholders into account in the rankings and understanding how rankings could be made more relevant and valuable for the range of stakeholders.

  • Opening the black box: triggers for shifts in business angels’ risk mitigation strategies within investments
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Venture Capital. - : Taylor & Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 1369-1066 .- 1464-5343. ; , s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We open up the black box of business angel risk mitigation within investments, exploring triggers that force angels to shift strategies to overcome performance and relationship risks. Primary data were collected from 32 interviews with four matched business angel–entrepreneur dyads. Extensive iterative theory and cross-case comparisons reveal that business angels often shift strategies over the course of an investment cycle due to internal or external context-specific triggers, rather than factors associated with a particular investor, entrepreneur, or investment-related characteristic. Moreover, entrepreneur responses significantly impact business angels’ subsequent risk mitigation strategies. Two triggers emerging particularly strongly from the data were: (i) a shift in the angel’s perception of the entrepreneur’s ability and (ii) the entrance of new investors. We theorize on these findings and derive four novel propositions.
