- This thesis deals with the establishment of orthopaedic medicine and the growth ofthe care of "cripples" in Sweden from the beginning of the 19th century to 1920. Itelucidates medical, social and political factors of this historical process, of whieh thefoundations were the interplay of private and public, medicine and care, and philanthropyand public health care.Ortopaedics was introduced in Sweden at the beginning of the 19th century.The treatment eonsisted of both correction technology and physical therapy. Thestudy describes the contexts - for instanee the arising conflict between the orthopaedistsand the 'Iing gymnasts' - and factors, which were significant for orthopaedicsto achive both societal and medical suecess.During the 1890s and the first decades of the 1900s, orthopaedics became an integratedpart of the growing institutionai care of cripples. The aim of such care wasto enable cripples to become self-supporting by means of orthopaedic treatmentand vocational training. Initial1y, care of cripples was a private philantropic matter,but developed successively inta a matter of general concern. By the end of theperiod studied, 1920, the crippled poor were considered as being one of society'ssocial problems as wel1 as a political issue.The measures aimed at aiding the cripples and the contexts in whieh the cripplesbecame the object of various interventions - orthopaedies, the care, politics - revealone significant consequence: the cripples became visible. The fact that they becamevisible can be seen in this historical process which defined and delimited thecripples as one group, as a social category. This occurred at different levels: in everydaylife of the institutions, by means of the medical diagnoses, in the manifestationsof philanthropy and in the categorization arising from the public and politicaldebate.

- Health has its basis in the relationships between human societies and cultures and the environment. The health of indigenous peoples living in traditional territories is threatened today by the destruction of this environment and the introduction of new contagious diseases; those who move to urban areas suffer even worse health because of ‘civilization’ diseases and the loss of the social networks that provide personal support and health care. Contrary to expectations, an epidemiological transition has not occurred in developing countries where many of these groups live. Two apparent underlying causes—persistent poverty and political inequality—are among the factors that will affect the future health of indigenous groups, together with trends in population, urbanization, and the environment. Indigenous groups can play a major role in determining that future and are already doing so through territorial-control projects aimed at protecting the environment on which their health and well-being depend.

- New technical innovations in the form of new production technologies are known to affect productivity, but organisational innovations and new ways of designing products have now been found to have a profound influence on productivity. These innovations have moved the industrialised countries into a stage in which industrial growth is accompanied by the continuous reduction in industrial employment. This development will greatly influence our society and put stringent demands on our political decision-making apparatus to avoid a growth in the 'wealth of nations' going hand-in-hand with a growth in poverty.

- In the wake of th International Geophysical Year (IGY 1957/58) a group of nations formed political regime to govern Antarctic affairs (The Antarctic Treaty - AT). To qualify as a member a nation has to demonstrate substantial research in Antarctica. Thus science is the ticket to become a participant (Consultative Party) in governance on this vast continent. The traditional view is that the AT sets aside politics, making Antica a continent for peaceful purposes and science. The paper challenges this traditional view and argues instead that the regime in question the actual doing of science serves as a form of politics (manifesting a country's presence and stakeholder interest), whence the thesis is that science is a continuation of politics by other means. This does not mean politics is detrimental to science, on the contrary good science gives a stronger voice at the table of consultative parties where important scientific and policy issues are discussed and negotiated,leading to further rules and regulations in (for example resource) management of the continent.

Politikerna och näringslivets företrädare förhandlade och gjorde bytesaffärer. Av de 52 hektar som skulle totalsaneras enligt Cityplanen 1967 blev endast 24 förverkligade.
