  • On the development of the child's ability to identify affective state from the prosodic features of adult speech
  • 1984
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ability to judge emotional states (anger, surprise, sadness and happiness) from the non- verbal components of speech was studied in 169 children aged from 4 to 10 years (20- 43 children per group, one group for each year of age except 9) in Uppsala, Sweden . 19 adults were used as a control group. The stimulus material consisted of speech samples, in which a male and a female actor had been instructed to portray the indicated emotional states. In general, the ability to make correct judgements increased with increased age. This was especially the case with the recognition of "surprise", "sadness" and "happiness", for which emotions increasing improvements were seen up to t he age of 8, where the ability was close to that of the adult controls. The ability to recognise an angry voice appeared to be well developed already at the age of 4.The most difficult item was the male voice portraying "happiness", where the children did not show and increase in their scores until the age of 8. Girls were found to have a more developed ability to identify the expressed emotions in all age groups. In most cases where erroneous judgements were made, the male voice was judged to be angry and the female to be sad, irrespective of intended emotion and of the sex of the child.

  • The Written Language Bias in Linguistics
  • 1982
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For some time I have been thinking of the predicament of present-day linguistics in terms of what I venture to call "the written language bias". It seems to me that a great number of our explicit or implicit theories, our methods and preferences are heavily influenced by the very long traditions of analyzing mainly, or only, certain kinds of written language. Even when we are in fact focussing on spoken language, we seem to approach it with a theoretical apparatus which is more apt for the analysisof written language. This essay represents a first attempt on my part to systematize some thoughts about this. I hope that it will stimulate discussion and lead to constructive criticism. This bock was largely written in t he academic year 1980/81 when I was employed by the Swedish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. When I worked at it, I profited from many ideas and suggestions of other people. Among these schalars I want to single out two, Jens Allwood and Ragnar Ronunetveit, with whom I had many inspiring discussions.

  • Litteratur som kommunikation : Förståelser, tolkningar, värderingar
  • 1983
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report contains six papers presented at a conf erence on "Literature as cornmunication", arranged by the Department of Cornmunication Studies at the University of Linköping in April 1983. Comrnon to the papers is that they all deal with problems of the reception of literature and present theoretical o r empirical evidence for what goes on when works of literature are understood , interpreted and evaluated. A unifying perspective is that literary texts are given meaning, significance and value through individual reading processes. Two of the papers discuss theoretical issues: one, what constitutes processes of understanding and interpretation and how these processes are related; the other, how a new concept of "literary text" can be established on empirical evidence from response research. The remaining four papers present differentaspects of empirical research: on theatrical performances of works by the Kenyan authorNgugi wa Thiong'o, on criteria of evaluation as used by different groups of readers, on the understanding of metaphors among three groups of young readers, and on the frames of refe rence used by critics in their reviews of literature.

  • Five studies in action theory
  • 1984
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The essays presented in this collection were written over a long period. The first two : "On the Classification of Verbs and Actions" and "On von Wright's Theory of Action" constitute steps in my preparation for the book Events, Actions, and Ordinary Language, Lund 1977. Much of the contents of the former paper was carried over to the book, whereas the analyses in the latter paper were more or less completely left out. These papers have not been published before ."On Various Forms of Interaction" is a development of soroe ideas in Events, Actions, and Ordinary Language. This paper was previously published in Swedish in Henschen-Dahlqvist A-M ed. Filosofiska smulor, Festskrift tillägnad Kon rad Marc- Wogau på hans 75-årsdag, Uppsala 1977."Action- Explanations Reconsidered" was wri t ten in 1981 and has not been previously published . It is a short presentation of a basic idea in my dissertation Explanation of Human Actions, Uppsala 1974, as well as a commentary on sorne criticisrns that could be (and partly have been) directed against it ."On Not Being Able To Act", finally, is a slightly modified version of a paper previously published in Pauli T. ed <320311>, Philosophical essays dedicated to Lennart Åqvist on his fiftieth birthday, Uppsala 1982. The analysis sketched in this paper has been more fully developed in my Disabilities and Their Classification, Linköping 1983.

  • The Notion of Language Game : A Natural Unit of Dialogue and Discourse
  • 1983
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The study of dialogue is a relatively new area for linguistic research. Only ten years ago, linguists were mostly occupied with the analysis of sentences and their internal structure on various levels. In other disciplines, however, such as sociology, anthropology and philosophy, discourse has been a frequent object of study in investigations concerning the role of language in human activities from different perspectives. In this paper, I will argue that the notion of language game, introduced by Wittgenstein and discussed by many others, is the natural candidate for such a unit. The game concept is, if we make it somewhat precise , very general and covers central properties of social action (cf.  Lyttkens 1981). Many authors have already begun to explore that concept for the purpose of studying dialogue (see e .g. Mann , Moore and Levivn 1977 , Levinson1979). Others use concepts that are in some respects equivalent to the game concept (see e.g. the discussion below of Reichman 's context space theory).

  • Text och bild i läromedel : Sju analyser av svenska som andraspråk
  • 1983
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report contains seven analyses of texts and illustrations in instructional materials used in the teaching of basic skills to adult immigrants. The authors, representing several different research fields, discuss various aspects of three materials, chosen to serve as representative examples , e.g.: What i s the visual code that affects the choice of i llustrations and what implicit ideologies are revealed by these illustrations? What assumptions about the learner's knowledge and lack of knowledge underlie texts and illustrations? What different orders of presentation can be traced in different materials, as regards linguistic phenomena and the various skills to be acqui red?Which linguistic forms and functions are represented in thematerials and/or promoted when they are used?
