  • Children's fear as experienced by the parents of children with cancer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 22:3, s. 233-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is known that children with cancer experience and express fear, but little is found in the literature about how the parents experience their child's fear. This study aimed to highlight the parents' lived experience and understanding of their child's fear. Focus group interviews with 15 parents were performed. Data were analyzed through a phenomenological hermeneutic method. Fear in children with cancer is described by the parents as a multidimensional phenomenon, which is somehow difficult to identify. It appears in contrast to the absence of fear. The comprehensive understanding of the results reveals that the parents experience their children's fear as both a suffering and an ethical demand for the parents to answer.

  • How physicians and nurses handle fear in children with cancer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 22:1, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research on fear in children with cancer has often focused on interventions to alleviate fear related to medical procedures and less on how to meet the challenges related to existential fear. This study aimed to describe how experienced nurses and physicians handle fear in children with cancer. Ten nurses and physicians with more than 10 years of experience in child oncology from a university hospital in Sweden were interviewed, and a qualitative content analysis was performed on the data. Nurses' and physicians' handling of fear encompasses commitment and closeness and yet also a distancing from fear and its expressions

  • Siblings experience of having a brother or sister with autism and mental retardation : A case of fourteen siblings from five different families
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 22:5, s. 410-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe the present and past experiences of 14 siblings from five families in terms of having abrother or sister with autism and mental retardation. Personal interviews were conducted with the siblings before their brothersor sisters were moved to a newly opened group home. Qualitative content analysis was used for the analysis of the transcribedtexts. The analysis resulted in seven content categories: precocious responsibility, feeling sorry, exposed to frightening behavior, empathetic feelings, hoping that a group home will be a relief, physical violence made siblings feel unsafe and anxious, andrelations with friends were affected negatively. The conclusion is that these siblings' experiences revealed stressful lifeconditions. Counseling for the family and for siblings is recommended to help them deal with their feelings and problems. Forthe siblings in these five families, a group home was a relevant alternative as a temporary or permanent placement for the childwith autism and mental retardation.

  • An Everyday Struggle - Swedish Families' Lived Experiences During a Child's Cancer Treatment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 24:5, s. 423-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to elucidate families' lived experience during a child's cancer treatment. Interviews were conducted with members of 11 affected families. A hermeneutical phenomenological approach was chosen. "Focus on the ill child-An everyday struggle" emerged as an essential theme. The families' lived experience of daily life was described as "feeling drained," "disrupting family life," "feeling locked up and isolated," "retaining normality," "becoming experts," and "changing perspectives." The result indicates that life during a child's cancer treatment is a taxing period and that the entire family is in need of support to ease their burdens. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Afraid of medical care : school-aged children’s narratives about medical fear
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 24:6, s. 519-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fear can be problematic for children who come into contact with medical care. This study aimed to illuminate the meaning of being afraid when in contact with medical care, as narrated by children 7–11 years old. Nine children participated in the study, which applied a phenomenological hermeneutic analysis methodology. The children experienced medical care as “being threatened by a monster,” but the possibility of breaking this spell of fear was also mediated. The findings indicate the important role of being emotionally hurt in a child's fear to create, together with the child, an alternate narrative of overcoming this fear.

  • Parents' experiences of their children achieving bladder control.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of pediatric nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-8449 .- 0882-5963. ; 23:6, s. 471-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Achieving bladder control is important for children and parents, but there is a shortage of knowledge about experiences from parents' points of view. The aim of this study was to describe parents' experiences of how their children achieved dryness. Twenty-two parents of 21 healthy children were interviewed about the process. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis. How children achieve dryness, as reported mainly by their mothers, seems to be influenced by knowing the time had come, implementing new daily routines, the child's willingness, and a desire to be like others.

  • Being in tune with oneself, children, and parents : meanings of being a supporter to families with children who disabilities as narrated by parent-selected professionals.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 20:3, s. 214-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of giving professional support to parents who have a child with a disability is well documented in the research literature. Research from parents' perspective shows however that how support is delivered for an entire family's well-being is crucial. The aim of this study was to illuminate the meanings of being a supporter as narrated by nine parent-selected professionals. The findings show that having a personal and professional philosophy on being and doing is crucial when helping parents care for their child. Being confident that it is always possible to help means to seek unique solutions for each child and family. Being a trustworthy partner of parents means to trust in parents as invaluable partners as well as to exert efforts to gain the parents' trust, seeing parents as both persons and the child's carer, and being sensitive to parents' vulnerability. Enabling parents to gain competence and confidence in parenthood embraces the knowledge and skills necessary for the competence as their child's carer and respecting parental authority. The findings are interpreted as being in tune with oneself, children, and parents--which in this study implies freedom from being confined by bureaucracy, prestige, and institutional norms but freedom to be authentic and act according to personal philosophies.

  • Being invigorated in parenthood : parents' experiences of being supported by professionals when having a disabled child.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 20:4, s. 288-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study was to know the meaning of parents' experiences of being supported by professionals when having a child with disability. Data were obtained through unstructured interviews with 16 parents within 10 families and analyzed by a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Parents narrated experiences of being supported and not being supported, and the findings are presented as contrasting meanings. Being supported by professionals means gaining confidence as a parent and having the child seen as valuable. This is interpreted as being invigorated in parenthood, where sharing the mutual task and goal, which is the child's best, with professionals is a crucial aspect. The meaning of experiences of lack of support illuminates the consequences for the entire family's well-being and the struggle parents experience to gain confidence as parents and recognition of the child as valuable.

  • From distance towards proximity - fathers’ lived experience of caring for their preterm infants
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing: Nursing Care of Children and Families. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-8449. ; 22:6, s. 490-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open interviews with 13 fathers were performed, using a hermeneutic phenomenological method, to illuminate their lived experience of caring for their preterm infant. Their lived experience was expressed as a process moving from initial feelings of distance toward feelings of proximity. The process was described as a pendulum that was easily disturbed. Feelings of distance included experiences of living beside reality, becoming an outsider, and living with worry. Feelings of proximity included experiences of returning to reality, becoming a family, and facing the future. Illumination of the father–infant interaction adds to the family-centered body of knowledge in neonatal nursing.
