  • Sensing through white gloves. On Congolese objects in Swedish Collections
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - Oxford : Berg Publishers. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 04:01, s. 75-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses collectibles acquired by Swedish missionaries and military officers active within the ill-reputed Congo Free State (1885-1908). Objects are approached here not primarily as tokens of Congolese material culture but as traces of a transnational cultural history and as points of entry to a cricial museology. drawing on case studies of collections I discuss the ways in which artifacts have been selected, joined and charged with new functions and meaning on their voyage between hands narratives and genres. In focus are five examples of objects that, analytically, have worked as what Roland Barthes (1980) calls punctum: the detail that distrubs and fascinates by force of seeming ungrammatical in relation to the larger context of which it forms part. By adding material to the Barthian concept I want to stress that such analytical imuplses may be evoked by all senses. During an inventory of Swedish Congolese collections, when the historical state of stored museum items as untouchables could temporarily bwe broken, their multisensory material presences proved able to challenge textual discourses, serve as alternative witnesses and demonstrate hidden significances of ethnographical museums and collections.

  • Gazing at Pudong - 'With a Drink in Your Hand' : Time Travel, Mediation, and Multisensuous Immersion in the Future City of Shanghai
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Senses and Society. - Oxford : Berg. - 1745-8927. ; 2:2, s. 155-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Chinese mega city of Shanghai is currently undergoing a radical restructuring of its infrastructure and urban fabric and aspires to become a future city and a world center. This article delineates an encapsulation of a future gaze in the city among cosmopolitan visitors, mediated through travel reporting, travel guides and expatriate websites. Shanghai is a multi-sensuous and highly engaging geography. The city invokes a future gaze which, in contrast with the alleged detachment of the tourist gaze, has to be interpreted in terms of an immersion of the whole body, and in relation to acts of drinking and eating in the chronotopes of nostalgic dwelling – the mansion garden and the restaurant. In addition, futurology in Shanghai is dependent upon a craze for history and as travelers engage with and perform a collective memory of the Golden Age of the twenties and thirties, the city enacts a specific experience of time travel.  This article shows how analyzing the intersensorium may contribute to a more critical evaluation of how visitors make sense of and contribute to the transformation in the city and further probes how sensory response, sentiment, memory and mediation work together.
