  • Populism, Democracy, and the Humanities : Interdisciplinary Explorations and Critical Enquiries
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this volume, twelve Sweden-based researchers reflect on the phenomenon and concept of populism in relation to democracy and the humanities from the multiple vantage points of various disciplinary backgrounds: philosophy, history of ideas, media and communication, journalism, political science, gender studies, organization science, education theory, popular culture, and literary studies. While the study of populism has attracted a lot of attention in political science, this topic has been rarely explored by scholars in the humanities. Rather than contribute to the already established area of populism studies in social and political sciences, our authors take a more open and exploratory stance through which they attempt to open up new fields and directions for inquiry from an interdisciplinary humanistic perspective.

  • Syntactic complexity across registers : Investigating (in)formality in second-language writing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of English for Academic Purposes. - : Elsevier BV. - 1475-1585 .- 1878-1497. ; 45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Syntactic complexity (i.e. the grammatical sophistication exhibited in language production) has been found to be positively correlated with formality. In viewing formality as a cline rather than as a dichotomy, the present study revisits previous claims about (in)formality in learner writing in relation to syntactic complexity. The use of commonly utilized measures of syntactic complexity is explored in learner writing and across four registers from the British National Corpus (academic prose, popular science, news and fiction). The results show that while the learners generally exhibited appropriate register awareness, there were some differences noted between their writing and that of the published writers, in particular with regard to the measure of complex nominals. A detailed analysis of this measure in the academic register showed that the learners make less frequent use of adjectival and prepositional modifiers than the expert writers. Our results thus confirm previous claims about the importance of phrase-level complexity measures as a predictor of formality. It would seem that learners would benefit from some targeted instruction of such structures for increased register awareness.

  • ”Mårran kommer!” : Barns upplevelser av det andras närhet
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Människan i en existentiell kultur. - Gävle : Gävle University Press. - 9789188145567 - 9789188145574 ; , s. 165-180

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Historical Encounters. - Newcastle : HERMES Research Group, University of Newcastle. - 2203-7543. ; 9:2, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We are at a time in world political history that seems to be on a precipice. Over the past decade, it is difficult to ignore the global growth in popularity for autocratic governments, also in some countries which for decades were either strong democracies or moving towards stable democratic governance. The current Russian attack on Ukraine brings into stark focus the political instability many citizens are facing—historical problems are causing, or used as a pretext for, current conflicts. History educators across many sectors—primary, secondary, university, and in public spaces such as museums and galleries – are curious about how these and other current events and issues can and should be approached. The events raise anew the questions of whether and how we can learn from the past, what we value as good and bad in the past, and how these insights might affect our present and future judgements. In relation to this it becomes vital to ponder how educators and members of the public can communicate the situation in Ukraine and similar events to others, while avoiding the bias that presentism can bring.

  • The interaction of religion and culture as a basis for religious education in early childhood education : An integrative/integral approach
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Routledge International Handbook of the Place of Religion in Early Childhood Education and Care. - London : Routledge. - 9780367862251 - 9781032115290 - 9781003017783 ; , s. 34-46
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter outlines interaction between religion and culture. An integrative and integral approach is presented in an attempt to show how historical phenomena, such as cultural forms, patterns of understanding, societal changes and technology, contribute to human self-understanding and the interpretation of religion. How culture shapes self-understanding and religion is discussed in terms of coordinates like centre and periphery and individual and collective. An alternative to an anthropocentric understanding of values is presented in which each thing has its own value. The plural theory of values is combined with a holistic, new materiality perspective. This perspective sees the spirit/matter unity, or the potentiality in the materiality of things, and the sensing body as essential to religious education in early childhood education.

  • Bouncing off Ove : Old men's readings of the novel A Man Called Ove as a cultural representation of ageing masculinity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - : Elsevier. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, there has been a rise in portrayals of greying protagonists in popular fiction, often featuring older people in humorous and heart-warming stories. An emerging genre within this literature is the “geezer and grump lit”, a genre where older people are active protagonists, and while often portrayed as grumpy “’usually turn out to have a heart of gold’” (Swinnen, 2019). A notable example of a book in this genre is the internationally bestselling novel A Man Called Ove (2012) by the Swedish author Fredrik Backman. Telling the story of the 59-year-old Ove who sets out to take his own life, the novel can be understood not only as a cultural representation of ageing, but more specifically a cultural representation of ageing masculinity. But how is this popular novel read and responded to by old men themselves? This article builds on a focus group study with Swedish men aged 65–92 who read and discussed A Man Called Ove. The aim of this article is thus to explore how men read the novel and how these readings function as ways of constructing, negotiating and challenging ageing masculinity and the old man as a gendered and aged position. Findings of the study show how discussion of the novel generated a variety of “imaginary positions” through which the participants made sense of what it means to be an old man in contemporary Sweden, including positions such as the active aspiring ageing man, the passive lonely old man, the embodied and vulnerable old man, and the dutiful old man. Future research should explore how other literary genres may provide ways of understanding how old men's gendered and aged subjectivities are constructed.
