  • Design for the BOP and TOP markets: Strategies used by the design students
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The base (BOP) and the top (TOP) of the world income pyramid represent the poor people and the people from developed countries, respectively. About two-fifths of the world population can be categorized as poor. Poverty is a trap because children born to poor parents are likely to grow up to be poor adults. In recent years, a poverty reduction approach that combines business development with poverty alleviation has received attention. The design of products for the BOP is an important ingredient of this poverty reduction approach. While companies are beginning to address the product needs of the BOP, there is limited practical and theoretical knowledge to support them. The current understanding of the design for the BOP is limited. This study aims at exploring the differences between the design strategies used by the industrial design students in designing products for the BOP and TOP markets. The results indicate the differences between their design strategies (i.e. problem driven strategy, solution driven strategy) in designing products for the BOP and TOP markets. We have discussed the implications of the findings for design practice and education. In particular, we have discussed how university-based design projects for the BOP can help in developing students’ different design skills.

  • What do photons do to fluorescently stained DNA in confinement?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 17th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2013; Freiburg; Germany; 27 October 2013 through 31 October 2013. ; 1, s. 5-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied a selection of factors influencing the damage of DNA in nanochannels during fluorescence imaging. For cutting and nicking of DNA we show that the DNA is shortened during imaging. To avoid photodamage over the course of several hours of a typical experiment, we demonstrate the importance of an oxygen free gas to propel the buffer solution through the device. Finally, by varying the size of the channels, we show indications that higher DNA concentrations lead to higher rates of photodamage necessitating a balance between needs for highly stretched DNA and needs for long measurement times.

  • Identifying bacteria using DNA binding maps
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 17th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2013; Freiburg; Germany; 27 October 2013 through 31 October 2013. - 9781632666246 ; 1, s. 473-475
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed an assay, based on nanofluidic channels and fluorescence microscopy, for optical mapping of DNA based on competitive binding between two molecules - one fluorescent and one sequence selective. From the experimental data we can extract binding constants for the two competing DNA binders, which may be subsequently used to calculate a theoretical reference map of any DNA with known sequence. The goal is to create a method for fast identification of bacteria from single DNA molecules without the need for additional cultivation or amplification. We here demonstrate a proof-of-principle experiment on phage DNA and furthermore show that the method can be used to distinguish between two strains of E. coli DNA and to map pieces of DNA onto the full genome.

  • Visualizing design problems and solutions of workstations on ships
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783642391811 ; 8026:PART 2, s. 252-260, s. 252-260
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevailing knowledge of ergonomics is not always taken into consideration while designing ships or introduced too late for it to be effective. Studies have shown that improvements of the working environment can be done with small efforts. Dissemination of research results is not always straight forward or effective due to failure to present research findings in appropriate and accessible forms for different audiences Research suggests that an interactive and explorative learning experience should be supported by technology like web resources. To reach the end users involved in the design of ships, the aim of the current study was to design and evaluate a prototype of an interactive multimedia module. The results showed good scores considering the usability aspects learning, understanding and meaningfulness. A Multimedia module like this can serve two purposes; create a learning situation and be used as a channel through which research results can be disseminated.

  • Shortest Paths with Curvature and Torsion
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computer Vision (ICCV), 2013 IEEE International Conference on. - 1550-5499. - 9781479928392 ; , s. 2024-2031
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a method of finding thin, elongated structures in images and volumes. We use shortest paths to minimize very general functionals of higher-order curve properties, such as curvature and torsion. Our globally optimal method uses line graphs and its runtime is polynomial in the size of the discretization, often in the order of seconds on a single computer. To our knowledge, we are the first to perform experiments in three dimensions with curvature and torsion regularization. The largest graphs we process have almost one hundred billion arcs. Experiments on medical images and in multi-view reconstruction show the significance and practical usefulness of regularization based on curvature while torsion is still only tractable for small-scale problems
