- Wide-spread adoption of solar energy is a key building block in sustainable production and consumption and a circular economy. However, as the market for solar photovoltaics (PV) will grow significantly, so will the demand for raw materials and the potential waste from discarded PV panels. Based on the experience of the European CIRCUSOL innovation action project, we review recent experience in testing circular solar business models, the emerging policy framework in Europe, as well as industry sector and standardization initiatives, which all in combination could catalyze the transition towards a circular solar industry. Based on the experience made in the CIRCUSOL project, a number of suggestions and pathways are proposed to further to advance a circular economy in the solar power sector.

Some manufacturers have started to take proactive measures seeking to close their material loops. Although it is very good that things started to move, there is still a long way to go on various fronts such as design and implementation of government policy, business models and purchasing behaviour of consumers.

As a citizen there has been some visible changes when purchasing products. However, there are still ways to go in regard to societal uptake and really reduce the use of unnecessary plastics as well as other packaging waste.

- Laws based on the concept of extended producer responsibiltiy (EPR) have been implemented now for the last three decades. While their contribution to source separation of targetted waste streams, their contribution to reuse as well as closure of material loops have been arguably limited, and their effects on upstream changes require further research. Improvement of existing EPR laws have been discussed in various venues and it is yet to be seen whether and how such improvement might bear fruit.

- International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University has been running MSc in Environmental Management and Policy (EMP) programme, an interdisciplinary, international masters programme for sustainability for the last 27 years. The programme, while keeping its applied and practical nature and dual column of business and policy, has been evolving over time and has produced a great number of sustainability professionals working in various capacities in different corners of the world. Meanwhile, it also faces challenges such as the choice between depth versus breadth, as well as how to incorporate new paradigm such as degrowth and perspectives from global south.

- Similarly to many OECD countries, repair has been replaced by purchasing of alternatives which has accrelated production and accompanying environmental impacts. With the re-recognition of the necessity of closure of material loops repair has been receiving renewed policy attention, both at the EU and Swedish level. There are also initiatives such as repair cafe that seek to equip citizens with tools and means to repair their own products, and mindset of some industry actors also started to change. Despite all these development, a recent study shows that the perceptions of citizens on self repair are still negative. The author contemplates on possible reasons.
