  • Navigating the legal liminalities of a de facto state: Migrant precarity and placeholder identity papers in Northern Cyprus
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Migration Studies. - 2049-5838 .- 2049-5846. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies the contested legal–political dynamics around forced migration flows to and through an unrecognized state: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). We adopt an analytical perspective drawn from the literature on performative politics and the legal anthropology of documents to explore how migration dynamics interact with the contested legal status of the TRNC. Our two main questions are: What practical shape do the human rights of refugees and asylum seekers take in an interstitial legal space, where the foundation of law is itself subject to ambiguity, suspension, and contestation? And what implications—opportunities and hazards—does this constellation have for refugees and asylum-seekers? Drawing on interviews, lived experience and fieldwork observations, we make two arguments. First, we contend that the interstitial status of the TRNC represents both an opportunity for refugees and a threat. Secondly, we argue that a purely legal or technical understanding of legal identity and concurrent rights is inadequate; we must subject these phenomena to a politically informed analysis of the everyday practices through which legal norms and spaces are continuously shaped and reshaped.

  • Analytic representations of mK, FK, mη, and Fη in two loop SU (3) chiral perturbation theory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 2470-0010. ; 97:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we consider expressions for the masses and decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons in SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. These involve sunset diagrams and their derivatives evaluated at p2=mP2 (P=π, K, η). Recalling that there are three mass scales in this theory, mπ, mK and mη, there are instances when the finite part of the sunset diagrams do not admit an expression in terms of elementary functions, and have therefore been evaluated numerically in the past. In a recent publication, an expansion in the external momentum was performed to obtain approximate analytic expressions for mπ and Fπ, the pion mass and decay constant. We provide fully analytic exact expressions for mK and mη, the kaon and eta masses, and FK and Fη, the kaon and eta decay constants. These expressions, calculated using Mellin-Barnes methods, are in the form of double series in terms of two mass ratios. A numerical analysis of the results to evaluate the relative size of contributions coming from loops, chiral logarithms as well as phenomenological low-energy constants is presented. We also present a set of approximate analytic expressions for mK, FK, mη and Fη that facilitate comparisons with lattice results. Finally, we show how exact analytic expressions for mπ and Fπ may be obtained, the latter having been used in conjunction with the results for FK to produce a recently published analytic representation of FK/Fπ.

  • Ultrasound-controlled acidogenic valorization of wastewater for biohydrogen and volatile fatty acids production: Microbial community profiling
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: iScience. - : Elsevier. - 2589-0042. ; 26:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study explored the influence of ultrasound on acidogenic fermentation of wastewater for the production of biohydrogen and volatile fatty acids/carboxylic acids. Eight sono-bioreactors underwent ultrasound (20 kHz: 2W and 4W), with an ultrasound duration ranging from 15 min to 30 days, and the formation of acidogenic metabolites. Long-term continuous ultrasonication enhanced biohydrogen and volatile fatty acid production. Specifically, ultrasonication at 4W for 30 days increased biohydrogen production by 3.05-fold compared to the control, corresponding to hydrogen conversion efficiency of 58.4%; enhanced volatile fatty acid production by 2.49-fold; and increased acidification to 76.43%. The observed effect of ultrasound was linked to enrichment with hydrogen-producing acidogens such as Firmicutes, whose proportion increased from 61.9% (control) to 86.22% (4W, 30 days) and 97.53% (2W, 30 days), as well as inhibition of methanogens. This result demonstrates the positive effect of ultrasound on the acidogenic conversion of wastewater to biohydrogen and volatile fatty acid production.
