  • Safety impacts of implementing median bus lane system in Seoul Metropolitan Area : vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes
  • 2018
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In metropolitan areas, public transportation has been encouraged as a sustainable mode because they can effectively transport many people and have less impact on traffic congestion and environment. In order to increase public transportation ridership, many jurisdictions have attempted to provide improved travel time and reliability of the public transportation system. These efforts include installing transit signal priority, dedicated median/curb bus lanes, bus rapid transit, bus bypass shoulder lanes, et cetera. In Korea, dedicated median bus lanes have been installed and operated since 1996. Currently, approximately 116km of the dedicated median bus lanes on 38 corridors are operational. The implementation of the dedicated median bus lanes in Seoul Metropolitan Area have been successful as they it resulted in the increased travel speed (15 km/h to 19km/h), bus arrival time accuracy (±1 min to 2 min), and daily bus-ridership (from 5.6 million to 5.75 million).Although there have been several studies that evaluated the operational effectiveness of the exclusive bus lanes in Seoul, few studies have assessed the safety impacts. This study aims at estimating the impacts of implementing median bus lane system in Seoul Metropolitan Areas for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes. In order to achieve the objective, a before-and-after study with comparison group method was employed and estimated crash modification factors (CMFs).

  • Multiple maternity in black-headed gull Larus ridibundus clutches as revealed by protein fingerprinting
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Avian Biology. - : Wiley. - 0908-8857 .- 1600-048X. ; 39:1, s. 116-119
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Social monogamy with biparental care is the norm in gulls Laridae, but egg colour variation suggests that some nests may contain mixed clutches laid by more than one female. Here we use protein fingerprinting of egg albumen to assess the occurrence of mixed maternity clutches in three colonies of black-headed gulls. Among 160 analysed clutches with >1 egg, 34% contained eggs from more than one female, and 15% of the eggs in clutches >1 came from other females than the major female (laying most eggs in nest). Among clutches with 2–3 eggs 28% were mixed, and among clutches with 4 or more eggs 89% contained eggs from two or more females. There were significantly fewer eggs from the major female in mixed nests (mean=2.06±0.63 SD) than in non-mixed nests (mean=2.82±0.43 SD). In nests without evidence of female conflict, hatching success of minority eggs was similar to that of eggs from the major female (12.5 and 8.4%, respectively). In 21% of mixed maternity nests, one or more minority eggs was buried or punctured, and 25% of eggs from major females were also found evicted, suggesting conflict between females and rejection of eggs. Intra-specific nest parasitism seems the most likely cause of mixed clutches, but there are also other possible causes.

  • IAS 10 Events after the Reporting Period Problematized : Some Questions Regarding the Standard’s (Read by its Letter) Understandability
  • 2018
  • In: Skattenytt. - Visby, Sweden : Skattenytts förlag AB. - 0346-1254. ; , s. 3-35, s. 3-35
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Events after the reporting period is an interesting phenomenon, as they are both very common and can be tricky to address correctly. Yet, quite surprisingly, not much research has been carried out on how to interpret the rules regarding events after the reporting period. This article is written from a legal perspective, with the purpose of looking closely at the wording of the IAS 10, in order to discuss if, or to what extent, it is clear enough to (as far as possible) give the management of a business (or auditors, courts etc.) sufficient clarity on how to handle events after the reporting period – or if, and if so how, the rules are unclear. Some hints de lege ferenda (what improvements could be made inthe standard?) are also given, with the purpose of making the IAS 10 clearer.

  • Using kaizen to improve employee well-being : Results from two organizational intervention studies
  • 2017
  • In: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 70:8, s. 966-993
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Participatory intervention approaches that are embedded in existing organizational structures may improve the efficiency and effectiveness of organizational interventions, but concrete tools are lacking. In the present article, we use a realist evaluation approach to explore the role of kaizen, a lean tool for participatory continuous improvement, in improving employee well-being in two cluster-randomized, controlled participatory intervention studies. Case 1 is from the Danish Postal Service, where kaizen boards were used to implement action plans. The results of multi-group structural equation modeling showed that kaizen served as a mechanism that increased the level of awareness of and capacity to manage psychosocial issues, which, in turn, predicted increased job satisfaction and mental health. Case 2 is from a regional hospital in Sweden that integrated occupational health processes with a pre-existing kaizen system. Multi-group structural equation modeling revealed that, in the intervention group, kaizen work predicted better integration of organizational and employee objectives after 12 months, which, in turn, predicted increased job satisfaction and decreased discomfort at 24 months. The findings suggest that participatory and structured problem-solving approaches that are familiar and visual to employees can facilitate organizational interventions.
