    • Identification of host volatile compounds attractive to codling moth Cydia pomonella, a most important insect of apple, will contribute to the development of safe control techniques. Synthetic apple volatiles in two doses were tested for antennal and behavioural activity in codling moth. Female antennae strongly responded to (Z)3-hexenol, (Z)3-hexenyl benzoate, (Z)3-hexenyl hexanoate, (+/-)-linalool and E,E-alpha-farnesene. Two other compounds eliciting a strong antennal response were the pear ester, ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate, and its corresponding aldehyde, E,E-2,4-decadienal, which is a component of the larval defence secretion of the European apple sawfly. Attraction of codling moth to compounds eliciting a strong antennal response was tested in a wind tunnel. Male moths were best attracted to a blend of (E,E)-alpha-farnesene, (E)-beta-farnesene and ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate. The aldehyde E,E-2,4-decadienal had an antagonistic effect when added to the above mixture.

    • Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) is used to study the initial stages of atmospheric corrosion of an AlMg alloy and of physical vapor deposition (PVD) deposited 2 μm Al dots on pure Mg. The latter system is used as a model of a two-phase AlMg alloy. The influence of CO2 was studied in situ in humid air using SKPFM. This method allows for the in situ investigation of the evolution of the Volta potential during exposure, the resolution being in the submicrometer range. The temperature was 22.0°C, and the relative humidity was 85 or 95%. The concentration of CO2 was <1 or 350 ppm. The corrosion products were analyzed by gravimetry, ion chromatography, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning Kelvin probe, and Auger electron spectroscopy. We found that the initial stages of atmospheric corrosion on magnesium are influenced by the presence of cathodic PVD-deposited aluminum. A similar effect was seen in the case of AZ91D, the aluminum-rich β-phase forming the cathodic areas. The β-phase is nobler compared to the substrate because of the higher Al content. In the absence of CO2, the corrosion attack is localized in nature whereas the presence of ambient levels of CO2 results in a more general corrosion attack. The inhibitive effect of CO2 on the atmospheric corrosion of AZ91D is explained by the formation of a passivating layer of Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2⋅5H2O. In the absence of CO2, the increase in pH originating from the cathodic reaction results in the dissolution of aluminum in the passive layer. A corrosion mechanism is proposed explaining the behavior in the two environments.

  • Attraction of codling moth males to apple volatiles

    • The attraction of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, to apple volatile compounds known to elicit an antennal response was tested both in the field and in a wind tunnel. In the field, (E)-beta-farnesene captured male moths. The addition of other apple volatiles, including (E,E)-alpha-farnesene, linalool, or (E,E)-farnesol to (E)-beta-farnesene did not significantly augment trap catch. Few females were caught in traps which also caught male moths, but female captures were not significantly different from blank traps. In the wind tunnel, males were attracted to (E,E)-farnesol, but not to (E)-beta-farnesene. The addition of (E,E)-alpha-farnesene to (E)-beta-farnesene had a synergistic effect on male attraction. The male behavioural sequence elicited by plant volatiles, including upwind flight behaviour, was indistinguishable from the behaviour elicited by sex pheromone.

  • Theory of a room-temperature silicon quantum dot transitor as a sensitive electrometer

    • We consider theoretically the use of a room-temperature silicon quantum dot based device for electrometer applications. The low power device includes two split gates that quantize the electronic energy levels in the emitter and collector regions. The base consists of a silicon quantum dot buried in silicon dioxide. The small size of the dot and quantization of the states in the leads combined to allow the device to operate at room temperature. The nonlinear current–voltage characteristics can be significantly altered by small changes to the potential of the split gates. Power dissipation in the device therefore changes with the split gate voltage, and this can be exploited in electrometer applications. A simple model of the power dissipated when the device is part of a microwave resonant inductor-resistor-capacitor tank circuit suggests that large changes in device power can be achieved by changing the gate voltage, thereby forming a measurable signal. We also demonstrate that the power dissipation in the device changes as the base width is varied, and that the current through the device increases exponentially with a decrease in base width.

  • Lasting impact on health-related quality of life after a first myocardial infarction.

    • AIMS: To investigate if the previously reported lack of recovery in Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL), in myocardial infarction, patients, would be long lasting. METHODS: Of 72 consecutive patients (19% women) with a mean age of 59 years, 65 consented to participate in a follow-up 1 and 2 years after their first myocardial infarction. HRQOL was assessed by self-administered questionnaires (SF-36, Cardiac Health Profile and Zung Depression Inventory). RESULTS: For the age group <59 years, there was no statistically significant recovery in SF-36 Mental Component Summary scores over time. There were improvements in Physical Component Summary scores, from baseline to 12 and to 24 months (p=0.006 and p<0.001, respectively) and from 6 to 24 months (p=0.044). This group reached community norms in Physical Component Summary scores after 2 years but scored significantly below norms in Mental Component Summary scores throughout with an effect size of -0.5 (CI -0.88 to -0.14) at 2 years. In patients > or =59 years, no changes took place after 6 months. At 2 years, factors Emotional and Social Functioning in the Cardiac Health Profile showed statistically significant differences between groups (p=0.03 and p=0.05, respectively) demonstrating poorer quality of life in the age group <59 years. CONCLUSIONS: In younger patients, a clinically important poorer effect on Health-Related Quality of life is still present 2 years after an acute myocardial infarction.

    • The effect of heat treatment on the IgE binding ability of ?-lactoglobulin, as pure protein or in whole milk, was studied by inhibition of IgE antibody binding using FEIA-CAP inhibition. A slight but significant decreased IgE binding was seen between unheated and heat-treated ?-lactoglobulin solution at 74 °C (IC50 = 2.03 and 3.59 ?g/mL, respectively, p = 0.032). A more pronounced decrease was found at 90 °C with an IC50 of 8.45 ?g/mL (p = 0.014). The inhibition of IgE binding of milk after heat treatment at 90 °C was also significantly decreased (p = 0.007). However, at all heat treatments, a similar total amount of IgE antibodies could be inhibited at a sufficiently high concentration of ?-lactoglobulin. The inhibiting ability of ?-lactoglobulin was significantly impaired in some fermented acidified milk products such as yogurt as compared to that in nonfermented milk (p < 0.001). There was only a small difference of IgE binding between the native forms of genetic variants A and B.

    • Aim: The main aim of the study was to describe the differences between some Northern countries regarding what foods, according to the patients, elicit hypersensitivity symptoms. Methods: At the participating clinics, patients with a history of food hypersensitivity (n = 1139) were asked to fill in a questionnaire in which 86 different foodstuffs were listed. Skin-prick tests (SPT) were performed with common inhalant allergens. Results: The foods that were reported as eliciting symptoms differed between countries. In Russia, Estonia, and Lithuania; citrus fruits, chocolate, honey, apple, hazelnut, strawberry, fish, tomato, egg, and milk were most often reported as causes of hypersensitivity. In Sweden and Denmark; birch pollen (BP) related foods, such as nuts, apple, pear, kiwi, stone fruits, and carrot were the most common causes. In all countries, children, more often than adults, had symptoms of allergic reaction to citrus fruits, tomato, strawberry, milk, egg, and fish. Most patients (95%) reported hypersensitivity to several foodstuffs (median: eight foods). The most common symptoms were oral allergy syndrome and urticaria. Severe symptoms were most common with fish, shellfish, nuts, and milk. Slight symptoms were most common with rice, coriander, poppy seed, lingonberry, corn, caraway, red currant, and fig. Earlier well-known correlations, such as that between BP sensitization and some fruits and vegetables, as well as that between mugwort and some spices, were corroborated. Positive correlations were found between self-reported hypersensitivity to crustaceans and SPT with horse. A negative correlation was seen between hypersensitivity to crustaceans and SPT with BP. Conclusions: The foodstuffs that often are reported to cause food hypersensitivity, differ between Sweden/Denmark on one side and the Baltic States and Russia on the other. BP-related foods dominate in Scandinavia, whereas some mugwort-related foods are of more importance in Russia and the Baltic States.
