  • Linking Education and Research : A Roadmap for Higher Education Institutions at the Dawn of the Knowledge Society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Linking education and research. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. ; , s. 11-33
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In an era characterized by a move towards a “knowledge society”, universities are central in fostering “knowledgeability”, that is the reflexive understanding of knowledge in knowledge societies. The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum. The aim of this paper is to use international examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, implementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden. We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the act of evaluating the link between education and research will increase awareness of this linkage by stakeholders involved in both education and research. In turn the link can be strengthened, contributing to increased quality in both education and research.

  • Amine Transaminases in Multi-Step One-Pot Reactions
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Amine transaminases are enzymes that catalyze the mild and selective formation of primary amines, which are useful building blocks for biologically active compounds and natural products. In order to make the production of these kinds of compounds more efficient from both a practical and an environmental point of view, amine transaminases were incorporated into multi-step one-pot reactions. With this kind of methodology there is no need for isolation of intermediates, and thus unnecessary work-up steps can be omitted and formation of waste is prevented. Amine transaminases were successfully combined with other enzymes for multi-step synthesis of valuable products: With ketoreductases all four diastereomers of a 1,3-amino alcohol could be obtained, and the use of a lipase allowed for the synthesis of natural products in the form of capsaicinoids. Amine transaminases were also successfully combined with metal catalysts based on palladium or copper. This methodology allowed for the amination of alcohols and the synthesis of chiral amines such as the pharmaceutical compound Rivastigmine. These examples show that the use of amine transaminases in multi-step one-pot reactions is possible, and hopefully this concept can be further developed and applied to make industrial processes more sustainable and efficient in the future.

  • Adherence to drug treatment and interpretation of treatment effects
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Suboptimal adherence to medical treatments is prevalent across several clinical conditions and can lead to treatment failure. Adherence is a far from fully explored phenomenon and there is little knowledge about how patients interpret treatment effects. Commonly used treatment evaluation measures are often relative measures, which may be difficult for lay people and patients to understand. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate factors with relevance to adherence, to estimate treatment effects with the time-based Delay of Event (DoE) measure in anticoagulant preventive treatments, and to explore how lay people responded to the DoE measure, as compared with established measures, regarding treatment decisions and effect interpretation.A quantitative population-based cross-sectional design was used for Study I. Study II used data from the Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation (ARISTOTLE) clinical trial and estimated effects as DoEs. Studies III and IV were carried out as randomised survey experiments. The results showed that general adherence behaviour was associated with both environmental and social factors. Estimations of DoE showed that stroke or systemic embolism was delayed 181 (95% CI 76 to 287) days through twenty-two months of apixaban use, as compared with  warfarin use. The delay of major and intracranial bleeding was 206 (95% CI 130 to 281) and 392 (95% CI 249 to 535) days, respectively, due to apixaban use for twenty-two months, as compared with  warfarin use. Presenting preventive treatment effects as DoEs to lay people was associated with high willingness to initiate treatment and positive views on treatment benefits and willingness to pay for treatment.Non-optimal adherence was partly associated with modifiable factors and it might be possible to increase adherence by managing these factors. Estimations of DoEs in preventive treatments gave information on effects regarding delay of different outcomes; the estimation also provides tools that might be useful for interpreting and communicating treatment effects in clinical decision-making. Lay people seemed to react rationally to variations in DoE magnitude; a higher proportion accepted treatment when the magnitude was greater.

  • Stability and inactivation mechanisms of two transaminases
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the past decades, more and more enzymes are employed as biocatalysts in industrial processes because of their advantages, such as high efficiency, substrate selectivity and stereoselectivity. Among them, amine transaminases (ATAs) are pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP) dependent enzymes. ATAs have gained attention for their excellent performance in chiral amine synthesis, and their broad substrate acceptance. However, the low operational stability of amine transaminases still limits their application in industry. The amine transaminase from Chromobacterium violaceum (Cv-ATA) has been selected for further investigation for its relatively low operational stability. Co-solvents and various additives have been added to the enzyme storage solution to improve its storage stability at various temperatures. Co-lyophilization of Cv-ATA with surfactants has been applied to improve its enzymatic activity in neat organic solvents. As a PLP-dependent dimeric enzyme, the Cv-ATA is not primarily inactivated due to tertiary structural changes. Instead, both dimer dissociation and PLP release may affect the enzyme stability. Therefore, the inactivation pathway of the Cv-ATA during operational conditions was explored. The unfolding of the enzyme was detected by several methods, and the detection of fluorescence intensity spectrum of tryptophan is extensively applied for its high sensitivity. The phosphate group of PLP can be coordinated into the phosphate group binding cup, which may influence the enzyme structural stability. Therefore, the effect of both PLP and inorganic phosphate ions (present in phosphate buffer) on the enzyme stability was explored. The amine transaminase from Vibrio fluvialis (Vf-ATA) is another amine transaminase, which catalyses the same biocatalytic reaction and has a similar substrate scope as Cv-ATA. However, there is still a lack of data on the stability of Vf-ATA. Consequently, the operational stability of Vf-ATA in various environments was studied.

  • Sustainable working life development through interactive research
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PIN-C Conference Proccedings. ; , s. 1-5
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Interactive research has emerged as a new approach to collaborative research in working life research, and it is characterized by a continuous joint learning process between the researchers and the practitioners. In this paper we argue that interactive research is a way to advance scientific knowledge about the development of new types of work arrangements and development of sustainable working life. We present the basic ideas and benefits of the interactive research approach, illustrated through a practical case, the HELIX Competence Centre and discuss potential limitation and challenges associated with this form of collaborative research.

  • SMARTARE MÖTEN MEET-MODELLEN
  • 2016
