  • Simulation Theorems via Pseudo-random Properties
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computational Complexity. - : Springer. - 1016-3328 .- 1420-8954. ; 28:4, s. 617-659

    • We generalize the deterministic simulation theorem of Raz & McKenzie (Combinatorica 19(3):403–435, 1999), to any gadget which satisfies a certainhitting property. We prove that inner product and gap-Hammingsatisfy this property, and as a corollary, we obtain a deterministic simulationtheorem for these gadgets, where the gadget’s input size is logarithmicin the input size of the outer function. This yields the firstdeterministic simulation theorem with a logarithmic gadget size, answeringan open question posed by Göös, Pitassi & Watson (in: Proceedingsof the 56th FOCS, 2015). Our result also implies the previous results for the indexing gadget, withbetter parameters than was previously known. Moreover, a simulationtheorem with logarithmic-sized gadget implies a quadratic separationin the deterministic communication complexity and the logarithm ofthe 1-partition number, no matter how high the 1-partition number iswith respect to the input size—something which is not achievable by previous results of Göös, Pitassi & Watson (2015).

  • Novel genome reveals susceptibility of popular gamebird, the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa, Phasianidae), to climate change
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Genomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0888-7543 .- 1089-8646.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We produced a high-quality de novo genome assembly of the red-legged partridge A. rufa, the first reference genome of its genus, by utilising novel 10× Chromium technology. The estimated genome size was 1.19 Gb with an overall genome heterozygosity of 0.0022; no runs of homozygosity were observed. In total, 21,589 protein coding genes were identified and assigned to 16,772 orthologs. Of these, 201 emerged as unique to Alectoris and were enriched for positive regulation of epithelial cell migration, viral genome integration and maturation. Using PSMC analysis, we inferred a major demographic decline commencing ~140,000 years ago, consistent with forest expansion and reduction of open habitats during the Eemian interglacial. Present-day populations exhibit the historically lowest genetic diversity. Besides implications for management and conservation, this genome also promises key insights into the physiology of these birds with a view to improving poultry husbandry practices.

  • Statistical methods for inter-view depth enhancement
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 3DTV-Conference. - : IEEE. - 9781479947584 ; , s. 6874755-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper briefly presents and evaluates recent advances in statistical methods for improving inter-view inconsistency in multiview depth imagery. View synthesis is vital in free-viewpoint television in order to allow viewers to move freely in a dynamic scene. Here, depth image-based rendering plays a pivotal role by synthesizing an arbitrary number of novel views by using a subset of captured views and corresponding depth maps only. Usually, each depth map is estimated individually at different viewpoints by stereo matching and, hence, shows lack of inter-view consistency. This lack of consistency affects the quality of view synthesis negatively. This paper discusses two different approaches to enhance the inter-view depth consistency. The first one uses generative models based on multiview color and depth classification to assign a probabilistic weight to each depth pixel. The weighted depth pixels are utilized to enhance depth maps. The second one performs inter-view consistency testing in depth difference space to enhance the depth maps at multiple viewpoints. We comparatively evaluate these two methods and discuss their pros and cons for future work.
