  • Observation of high energy atmospheric neutrinos with AMANDA
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). ; , s. 823-827
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1997 the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) started operating with 10 strings. In an analysis of data taken during the first year of operation 188 atmospheric neutrino candidates were found. Their zenith angle distribution agrees with expectations based on Monte Carlo simulations. A preliminary upper limit is given on a diffuse flux of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

  • IGF-I treatment attenuates renal abnormalities induced by neonatal ACE inhibition.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Regulatory, integrative and comparative physiology. - 0363-6119. ; 279:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An intact renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during nephrogenesis is essential for normal renal development. We have shown previously that neonatal inhibition of the RAS, either with ANG II type 1-receptor blockade or angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, induces irreversible renal abnormalities. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether an interrupted RAS can be compensated for by exogenous administration of another important renal growth-promoting factor, the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). Rats were treated daily with either the ACE inhibitor enalapril (10 mg/kg), recombinant human IGF-I (3 mg/kg), or the combination enalapril + IGF-I from perinatal day 3 to 13. Urinary concentrating ability, renal function, and renal morphology were assessed at adult age. The gene expression and localization of IGF-I, its receptor, and the growth hormone receptor (GHR) were investigated during ongoing ACE inhibition. The present study demonstrates normalized renal function and histology in enalapril + IGF-I-treated animals. Ongoing ACE inhibition suppressed the medullary IGF-I mRNA expression and altered the local distribution of both IGF-I and GHR. Thus the present study provides evidence for an interaction between the RAS and GH/IGF-I axis in renal development.

  • Magnetooptical studies of CdSe/(Zn,Mn)Se semimagnetic nanostructures
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: 8th International Symposium Nanostructures: Physics Technology,2000. - : Ft. Belvoir Defense Technical Information Center. ; , s. 440-443
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In conclusion the performed magneto-PL measurements exhibit fonrmation of 0D excitons in CdSe/(Zn,Mn)Se nanostructures. The excitonic states forming the inhomogeneously broadened emission band differ both in their energy (due to fluctuations in the sizes and compositions among the localization sites) and in magnetic properties (most probably, due to the effect of Mn ions clustering in the nearby regions). The structure potential for spin-related optoelectronic applications is demonstrated, owing to almost complete circular polarization of the emitted light within the wide spectral range (about 1OO meV) at moderate magnetic fields.

  • Tar evolution profiles obtained from gasification of biomass and coal
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Biomass and Bioenergy. - 0961-9534 .- 1873-2909. ; 18:1, s. 87-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tar content of the product gases from gasification of biomass is one of the major factors affecting the subsequent process stages. In this work, evolution profiles of the main tar constituents, i.e. benzene, toluene, indene, naphthalene and phenol were obtained during about 1 h gasification runs of biomass and coal in a pressurised fluidised-bed at 700 and 900 degrees C, 0.4 MPa. Sampling and analysis was achieved, using the solid-phase adsorption (SPA) method, previously developed in our laboratory. Our main objectives were: (1) to illustrate the usefulness of the SPA method; (2) to shed new light on the main factors governing tar evolution. It was found that temperature and the type of feedstock used mainly affected tar yields. For both biomass and coal the concentration of tar products decreased with increasing run time at a rate that was fastest initially. This behaviour, which was much more pronounced for coal, provides evidence that char catalytically affects tar evolution. Accordingly, char accumulates in the bed to a various extent depending on fuel and gradually approaching steady state. Biomass char, contrary to coal char, is readily oxidised during gasification, and thus only small steady-state amounts are available to catalyse tar cracking reactions.

  • Chemical grafting of molecularly imprinted homopolymers to the surface of microplates. Application of artificial adrenergic receptor in enzyme-linked assay for beta-agonists determination
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : ACS American Chemical Society. - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 72:18, s. 4381-4385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A technique for coating of microplate weds with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MTP), specific for epinephrine, is presented. 3-Aminophenylboronic acid was polymerized in the presence of epinephrine using oxidation of the monomer by ammonium persulfate. This process resulted in the grafting of a thin polymer layer onto the polystyrene surface of the microplates. The polymer affinity was determined by an enzyme-linked assay using a conjugate of horseradish peroxidase and norepinephrine (HRP-N). It was found that imprinting resulted in increased affinity of the polymer toward HRP-N and epinephrine. Influence of the buffer pH and concentration on the polymer affinity was analyzed. It was shown that the MIP-coated microplates could be used for assay development and drug screening. The high stability of the polymers and good reproducibility of the measurements make MIP coating an attractive alternative to traditional antibodies or receptors, used in ELISA.
