  • Chromosomal instability determines taxane response
  • 2009
  • In: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 1091-6490. ; 106:21, s. 8671-8676
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Microtubule-stabilizing (MTS) agents, such as taxanes, are important chemotherapeutics with a poorly understood mechanism of action. We identified a set of genes repressed in multiple cell lines in response to MTS agents and observed that these genes are overexpressed in tumors exhibiting chromosomal instability (CIN). Silencing 22/50 of these genes, many of which are involved in DNA repair, caused cancer cell death, suggesting that these genes are involved in the survival of aneuploid cells. Overexpression of these “CIN-survival” genes is associated with poor outcome in estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer and occurs frequently in basal-like and Her2-positive cases. In diploid cells, but not in chromosomally unstable cells, paclitaxel causes repression of CIN-survival genes, followed by cell death. In the OV01 ovarian cancer clinical trial, a high level of CIN was associated with taxane resistance but carboplatin sensitivity, indicating that CIN may determine MTS response in vivo. Thus, pretherapeutic assessment of CIN may optimize treatment stratification and clinical trial design using these agents.

  • Ionic conductivity and thermal stability of magnetron-sputtered nanocrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia
  • 2009
  • In: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 105:10, s. 104907-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Thermally stable, stoichiometric, cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin-film electrolytes have been synthesized by reactive pulsed dc magnetron sputtering from a Zr-Y (80/20 at. %) alloy target. Films deposited at floating potential had a ‹111› texture. Single-line profile analysis of the 111 x-ray diffraction peak yielded a grain size of ~20 nm and a microstrain of ~2% regardless of deposition temperature. Films deposited at 400 °C and selected bias voltages in the range from -70 to -200 V showed a reduced grain size for higher bias voltages, yielding a grain size of ~6 nm and a microstrain of ~2.5% at bias voltages of -175 and -200 V with additional incorporation of argon. The films were thermally stable; very limited grain coarsening was observed up to an annealing temperature of 800 °C. Temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy analysis of the YSZ films with Ag electrodes showed that the in-plane ionic conductivity was within one order of magnitude higher in films deposited with substrate bias corresponding to a decrease in grain size compared to films deposited at floating potential. This suggests that there is a significant contribution to the ionic conductivity from grain boundaries. The activation energy for oxygen ion migration was determined to be between 1.14 and 1.30 eV.

  • "Ive also experienced loss and fear" : Effects of previous similar experience on empathy
  • 2009
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 50:1, s. 65-69
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Although it is frequently argued that empathy is increased by similar experiences, this idea has rarely been tested. This study investigated the relationship between empathy and prior similar experience. Participants read four different stories and rated the degree of empathy they felt. They also reported the extent to which they had prior similar experience of the events in the stories. We found that these self-reports of prior similar experience increased empathy for the persons in the stories. Similar experience may be an important situational antecedent for feeling empathy for another person. Pointing out similarities among experiences may be a fruitful means of training empathy.

  • Categorical innovations for rough sets
  • 2009
  • In: Rough set theory. - Berlin/Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783540899204 - 9783540899211 ; , s. 45-69
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Categories arise in mathematics and appear frequently in computer science where algebraic and logical notions have powerful representations using categorical constructions. In this chapter we lean towards the functorial view involving natural transformations and monads. Functors extendable to monads, further incorporating order structure related to the underlying functor, turn out to be very useful when presenting rough sets beyond relational structures in the usual sense. Relations can be generalized with rough set operators largely maintaining power and properties. In this chapter we set forward our required categorical tools and we show how rough sets and indeed a theory of rough monads can be developed. These rough monads reveal some canonic structures, and are further shown to be useful in real applications as well. Information within pharmacological treatment can be structured by rough set approaches. In particular, situations involving management of drug interactions and medical diagnosis can be described and formalized using rough monads.
