  • Expanding the operating space of ICRF on JET with a view to ITER
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 46:2, s. 391-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on ITER-relevant ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) physics investigated on JET in 2003 and early 2004. Minority heating of helium three in hydrogen plasmas-(He-3)H-was systematically explored by varying the 3 He concentration and the toroidal phasing of the antenna arrays. The best heating performance (a maximum electron temperature of 6.2 keV with 5 MW of ICRF power) was obtained with a preferential wave launch in the direction of the plasma current. A clear experimental demonstration was made of the sharp and reproducible transition to the mode conversion heating regime when the 3 He concentration increased above similar to 2%. In the latter regime the best heating performance (a maximum electron temperature of 8 keV with 5 MW of ICRF power) was achieved with dipole array phasing, i.e. a symmetric antenna power spectrum. Minority heating of deuterium in hydrogen plasmas-(D)H-was also investigated but was found inaccessible because this scenario is too sensitive to impurity ions with Z/A = 1/2 such as C6+, small amounts of which directly lead into the mode conversion regime. Minority heating of up to 3% of tritium in deuterium plasmas was systematically investigated during the JET trace tritium experimental campaign (TTE). This required operating JET at its highest possible magnetic field (3.9 to 4 T) and the ICRF system at its lowest frequency (23 MHz). The interest of this scenario for ICRF heating at these low concentrations and its efficiency at boosting the suprathermal neutron yield were confirmed, and the measured neutron and gammay ray spectra permit interesting comparisons with advanced ICRF code simulations. Investigations of finite Larmor radius effects on the RF-induced high-energy tails during second harmonic (omega = 2 omega(c)) heating of a hydrogen minority in D plasmas clearly demonstrated a strong decrease in the RF diffusion coefficient at proton energies similar to 1 MeV in agreement with theoretical expectations. Fast wave heating and current drive experiments in deuterium plasmas showed effective direct electron heating with dipole phasing of the antennas, but only small changes of the central plasma current density were observed with the directive phasings, in particular at low single pass damping. New investigations of the heating efficiency of ICRF antennas confirmed its strong dependence on the parallel wavenumber spectrum. Advances in topics of a more technological nature are also summarized: ELM studies using fast RF measurements, the successful experimental demonstration of a new ELM-tolerant antenna matching scheme and technical enhancements planned on the JET ICRF system for 2006, they being equally strongly driven by the preparation for ITER.

  • Neutron emission spectroscopy results for internal transport barrier and mode conversion ion cyclotron resonance heating experiments at JET
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 79:10, s. 10E514-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) on ((3)He)D plasmas at JET was studied with the time of flight optimized rate (TOFOR) spectrometer dedicated to 2.5 MeV dd neutron measurements. In internal transport barrier (ITB) plasma experiments with large (3)He concentrations (X((3)He)>15%) an increase in neutron yield was observed after the ITB disappeared but with the auxiliary neutral beam injection and ICRH power still applied. The analysis of the TOFOR data revealed the formation of a high energy (fast) D population in this regime. The results were compared to other mode conversion experiments with similar X((3)He) but slightly different heating conditions. In this study we report on the high energy neutron tails originating from the fast D ions and their correlation with X((3)He) and discuss the light it can shed on ICRH-plasma power coupling mechanisms.

  • Modeling of neutron emission spectroscopy in JET discharges with fast tritons from (T)D ion cyclotron heating
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 77:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measurement of fast ion populations is one of the diagnostic capabilities provided by neutron emission spectroscopy (NES). NES measurements were carried out during JET trace tritium campaign with the magnetic proton recoil neutron spectrometer. A favorable plasma scenario is (T)D where the resulting 14 MeV neutron yield is dominated by suprathermal emission from energetic tritons accelerated by radio frequency at their fundamental cyclotron frequency. Information on the triton distribution function has been derived from NES data with a simple model based on two components referred to as bulk (B) and high energy (HE). The HE component is based on strongly anisotropic tritium distribution that can be used for routine best-fit analysis to provide tail temperature values (T-HE). This article addresses to what extent the T-HE values are model dependent by comparing the model above with a two-temperature (bi-) Maxwellian model featuring parallel and perpendicular temperatures. The bi-Maxwellian model is strongly anisotropic and frequently used for radio frequency theory.

  • Determination of the critical carbon content for growth of acicular ferrite
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Solid-Solid Phase Transformations in Inorganic Materials 2005, Vol 1. ; , s. 105-110
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The critical carbon content for growth of acicular ferrite has been determined in Fe-Ni-C alloys by using a gradient technique. A carbon gradient has been introduced in binary Fe-Ni alloys which are subsequently heat treated isothermally. The carbon content. at the position where acicular ferrite stops growing, is determined by EMPA (Electron Microprobe Analysis) and microstructural examination with LOM (Light Optical Microscopy). At low Ni contents the experimentally determined values for the critical carbon content can be understood from the hypothesis that the growth of acicular ferrite is controlled by carbon diffusion under paraequilibrium conditions and modified with an extra thermodynamic barrier.

  • DECOVALEX III BMT3/BENCHPAR WP4 : The thermo-hydro-mechanical responses to a glacial cycle and their potential implications for deep geological disposal of nuclear fuel waste in a fractured crystalline rock mass
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Rock Mechanics And Mining Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1365-1609 .- 1873-4545. ; 42:5-6, s. 805-827
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A number of studies related to past and on-going deep repository performance assessments have identified glaciation/ deglaciation as major future events in the next few hundred thousand years capable of causing significant impact on the long term performance of the repository system. Benchmark Test 3 (BMT3) of the international DECOVALEX III project has been designed to provide an illustrative example that explores the mechanical and hydraulic response of a fractured crystalline rock mass to a period of glaciation. The primary purpose of this numerical study is to investigate whether transient events associated with a glacial cycle could significantly influence the performance of a deep geological repository in a crystalline Shield setting. A conceptual site-scale (tens of kilometres) hydro-mechanical (HM) model was assembled based primarily on site-specific litho-structural, hydrogeological and geomechanical data from the Whiteshell Research Area in the Canadian Shield, with simplification and generalization. Continental glaciological modelling of the Laurentide ice sheet through the last glacial cycle lasting approximately 100,000 years suggests that this site was glaciated at about 60 ka and between about 22.5 and 11 ka before present with maximum ice sheet thickness reaching 2500 m and maximum basal water pressure head reaching 2000m. The ice-sheet/drainage model was scaled down to generate spatially and temporally variable hydraulic and mechanical glaciated surface boundary conditions for site-scale subsurface HM modelling and permafrost modelling. Under extreme periglacial conditions permafrost was able to develop down to the assumed 500-m repository horizon. Two- and three-dimensional coupled HM finite-element simulations indicate: during ice-sheet advance there is rapid rise in hydraulic head, high transient hydraulic gradients and high groundwater velocities 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than under nonglacial conditions; surface water recharges deeper than under nonglacial conditions; upon ice-sheet retreat, the gradients reverse; fracture zone network geometry, interconnectivity and hydraulic properties significantly influence flow domain response; residual elevated heads are preserved for 10,000s in the low-diffusivity rock; and no hydraulic jacking or shear failure occurs at depth. It was found that transient coupled modelling is necessary to capture the essence of glacial effects on Performance Assessment. Model dimensionality also significantly affects simulated results.

  • Effects of temperature, salt, and deuterium oxide on the self-aggregation of alkylglycosides in dilute solution. 2. n-Tetradecyl-beta-D-maltoside
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 21:4, s. 1507-1515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of salt, temperature, and deuterium oxide on the self-aggregation of n-tetradecyl-beta-D-maltoside (C(14)G(2)) in dilute solution have been investigated by static light scattering, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), tensiometry, and capillary viscometry. SANS data show that the micelles can be described as relatively flexible polymer-like micelles with an elliptical cross section, at least at temperatures between 35 and 50 degreesC. The micelles grow in one dimension with increasing temperature and concentration. DLS and viscometry data suggest that the micelle size reaches a maximum at 60-70 degreesC. Comparison of DLS data in D2O and H2O shows that the micelles are larger in the former case. The effect of salt on the micelle size was found to follow the Hofmeister series. Thus, at constant salt concentration, the micelle size decreases according to the sequence SO42- > Cl (-)> NO3 > I- > SCN-, where I- and SCN- act as salting-in anions. From tensiometric data, it can be concluded that the temperature effects on micelle morphology do not correlate directly with those on unimer solubility. Rather, the temperature effect on the hydrocarbon chain conformation seems to be decisive for the micelle morphology. At constant temperature, on the other hand, the effect of salt and deuterium isotope is attributable to changes in effective headgroup area, including intermolecular interactions and water of hydration.

  • New diagnostic techniques and technologies at JET (invited)
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 77:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Fusion Development Agreement's mission for JET is the development of ITER scenarios exploiting the specific properties of the device. This task requires significant improvements in the measuring techniques. The most innovative diagnostic upgrades are in the fields of edge measurements, detection of fast magnetohydrodynamics modes and burning plasma diagnostics. The importance of plasma-wall interactions, and, in particular, the issue of tritium inventory promoted the development of the quartz microbalance, a detector with improved time resolution to measure material redeposition in the remote areas of the inner divertor. Measurement of Alfven cascades with unprecedented spectral resolution, reaching a toroidal n number of up to 16, was obtained using an O-mode microwave reflectometer as an interferometer. For the diagnosis of the fusion products, a new approach is being developed to measure the He ash based on double charge exchange between thermalized particles and neutrals from JET beams. There have been several upgrades of the neutron diagnostic systems, one of which, the new time of flight neutron spectrometer designed for high counting rates is described.
